Another object of my invention is to provide a mechanism that will Aautomatically release the door at'the -side towards which the body is tilted and permit the door to` open by gravity and the weightof the lading being discharged.
Anotherobject of my invention is to provide a door locking mechanism mounted entirely on the car body and controlled by the tilting and righting movements of the body as the body moves in dumping.
For purposes of illustration, the dump car has been shown withthe'bodydnounted as inthe type of car known as arotarytrunnion dump car in which the body is mounted directly on the underframefand tilts about the underframe during: the firstv part of the dumping movement until trunnions Vwhich are' mounted on the sides of the body engage with the underframev after which the body tilts about such trunnions asl pivots. in completing the dumping movement. At eachside of the body and hinged adjacent the {ioor thereof are doo-rse ,forming the sidewalls of the body and having downward depending portions VG' spaced longitudinally of the doors to which theA door locking mechanism is attached. The essential elements of the door locking mechanism comprise transverse arms 7 attached at one end to the downward depending door portions 6 and extending across the car body to an engagement with a member 8 pivotal-ly mounted on the underframe at the side opposite said door and having one end in engagement with the body'to control the movements of its respective arm v' and door 4l. These members 8 mounted on each side of the undcrframe have a link member 9 connecting the `ends of the members opposite to the ends in engagement with the body to cause both members to be moved simultaneouslywhen the one is moved through its engagement with the tilting'; body. These fio transverse arms 7 are supported by the members 10 and ll at each side of the body and the arms 7 move within these members as the side door to which they are attached is opened and closed in discharging the lading carried by the body. The members l() and 1l perform the additional function of holding the locking members 7 in position to maintain the inactive door closed while the body moves in dumping.
lVith the body in horizontal position as shown in Fig. l and it is desired to tilt the body towards the right side oi' the underframe, the following operations take place The body tilting mechanism (not shown in the drawings), ot whatever type used, tilts the body towards the right side of the underframe and the member 8 on that side of the undert'rame remains in contact with the body and moves towards the right side of the underframe simultaneously with the body. The member 8 on the lett side of the undertrame moves out of engagement with the left side of the body as the body rises and permits the arm 7 in engagement with it to move transversely oi the underframe from right to left and permits the door on the right side of 'the body to open. by gravity and the weight of the lading being discharged. After the door is released and begins to open the door operating mechanism mounted on the underframe engages with the door and controls the door throughout the remainder of its opening movements.
The member 8 on the right side of the underrame and in engagement with the right side ot the body acts as a stop for the member 7 attached to the door on the left side of the body and prevents that member from moving inwardly across the body to permit the door on the leit side of the body to open. The members l0 and ll mounted on the left side of the body hold the member 7, secured to the door on that side ot' the body, in contact with its respective member 8 and at the same time support the free end of the member 7 secured to the opened door and hold it in operative position to engage with its respective member 8 when the body again resumes a position horizontal with the underframe.
Then the body tilting mechanism returns the body to a horizontal position, the return movement of the body moves the member 8 in engagement with the body inwardly and tirough its attachment to the member 8 on the opposite side of the underframe, by means of the link member 9, that member on the opposite side of the underframe is moved into position to engage with the body. Simultaneously with the return of the body to a horizontal position, the door operating mechanism returns the door to a closed position so that both the doors are fully closed before the body has completed its return to a horizontal position and the member 7 attached to the closing door is moved inwardly across the car in its supporting members l0 and l1 a suiiicient distance to permit the member' 8 on the left side of the body to move into position between the members 10 and l1 and engage with the member 7 secured to the door on the right side of the body, locking it in closed position as the body comes to rest on the underframe. Simultaneously with the return of the body to an upright position, the door operating mechanism passes out ot' engagement with its respective door and the doors on each side of the body are again held in closed position only by the door locking members 7 in engagement with the members 8 mounted on the under-frame.
lVhen the body is tilted towards the left side of the underframe, the same movements ot the respective members, as described above takes place excepting that the member 8 mounted on the right side of the under-trame passes out of engagement with the body and the door on the lett side of the underi'rame is permitted to open to discharge the lading and the discharging door is again locked in position as the body returns to horizontal position as previously described.
Having thus described the invention what claim .as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. ln a dump car, an underirame, a dump body mounted on said underframe in stable equilibrium, doors for said body hinged adjacent the floor thereof, downward depending members on said doors and a door locking mechanism for vautomatically and selectively releasing the descending door for opening as the car body is-tilted in dumping, said mechanism comprising a stop member mounted on each side of the underframe and in engagement with the car body, a member mounted on thebody having one end secured to a depending door member and the other end portion extending transversely of the car to a selective engagement with said stop member mounted on the opposite side oi" the underframe.
2. In a dump car, an underframe, a dump body supported directly on said under-frame in stable equilibrium, means mounted at each side of the body and normally free of the underframe which engage with the underrame as the body is tilted .and about which the body turns in dumping, doors for said body hinged adjacent the ioor thereof, downwardv depending members on said doors, a door locking mechanism mounted on the body tor automatically and selectively releasing the descending door for opening as the body is tilted and automatically locking the door when the door is closed upon the return of the body toa horizontal position, said mechanism comprising' a member attached at one end toa depending door member and entending transversely of the car to a selective engagement with a member pivot-ally mounted on the underframe, said underframe member having a selective engagement with the body and a suitable mechanism mounted on the underframe for limiting the opening and effecting the closing of said doors.
3. In a dump car, an underframe, a dump body mounted on said underframe in stable equilibrium and tilting to either side in dumping, side doors for said body hinged adjacent the floor thereof, downward depending members on said doors, a door locking mechanism for automatically and selectively locking and unlocking said doors as the body is moved in dumping, said mechanism comprising a member mounted on the body and movable transversely thereof, a member pivotally mounted on each side of the runderframe adjacent the depending door members, said member mounted on the body having a connection at one end to .a depending door member and at the other end having a selective engagement with the pivotally mountedY underframe member at the opposite side of the car. In a dump car, an underframe, a dump body tiltably mounted on said under-frame, side doors for said body hinged adjacent the tloor thereof, downward depending members on said doors, member pivotally mounted at each side of the underframe and having a selective engagement with the body, a member mounted on the body having one end secured to a depending door member and extending across the car body to a selective engagement with the opposite pivotally mounted underframe member and means mounted on the underframe for holding said pivotally mounted members in operative position.k
5. ln a dump car, an underframe, a dump body mounted on said underframe in stable equilibrium and tilting to either side in dumping, side doors for .said body hingedv adjacent the floor thereof, downward depending members on said doors and a door locking mechanism for automatically and selectively controlling the locking and unlocking of the discharging door as the body moves in dumping, said mechanism comprising .a
member pivot-ally mounted on the opposite side of the underframe from its respective door, a member mounted on the body having one end in engagement with its respective door and the other end extending transversely of the body to a selective engagement with the opposite pivotaily mounted underframe member, said members being out of engagement with each other during the time the door is open.

The combination in a dump car of an underframe, a body tiltably mounted on said underframe, side doors for said body hinged adjacent the floor thereof, and a door locking mechanism mounted on the body and having a selective engagement with the underframe for holding the door in closed position with the body horizontal and releasing the discharging door for opening as the body is tilted, said mechanism comprising a member secured to each side door and extending transversely of the body, and a stop member loo mounted on each side of the underframe 'and engaging with the body when the body is horizontal, said member secured to each side door moving transversely of the underframe 5 to permit its respective door to open as the body moves out of contact With its respective stop member.
