Description
Dec. 1 1931. I N 1,834,156
CORER Filed Nov. 3, 1930 FIGS.
FIG- INVENTOR.
A TTORN Patented Dec. 1, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFICE i HOWARD A. HAYDEN, OF DETROIT,MICHIGAN CORER Application filed November 3, issof Serial m5. 492,928.
This invention relates to corers and more particularly to devices useful in coring certain citrus fruits, especially grapefruit.
An object of the invention is a corer. which is operable to core halves of grapefruit, the
corer device having a coring ring and a cutter, movable in a plane parallel to the plane of the grapefruit half, and adapted to remove and sever the core formed by the corer 10 ring.
A further object is a simple, easily operable and inexpensive corer and cutter device of.
As indicated on the drawings, the'device includes a corer ring 10 having an annular cutting edge 11. Secured to the ring, as
shown, or in any other manner, or even in tegral therewith, is a cutter (U shaped) and handle member 13, a leg 14 of the member being secured to the ring 10, and a second leg 15 being movable towards and away from the leg 14, the member 13 beingmade of flexible material, so that the cutter or movable leg 14 does not tend to approach the leg 13 but rather tends to move away from it. The cutter leg 15 carries at its extremity a cutter 16 having a sharpened edge 17, as
shown. I
In use, the device is grasped in the hand,
the member 13 resting in the curled palm and fingers. The corer ring .10 is brought to the exposed plane of the grapefruit half and thrust downwardly, its sharpened edge 11 forming a cylindrical core. The latter is then severed and removed from the grape fruit half by forcing the leg 15 towards the leg 14, the cutter edge 17, severing the core.
Fig. 8 shows a device having an auxiliary,
vertically disposed blade 21 formed from the leg 14, this form being useful in coring large articles such as melons, whose depth is such that the core must be forced from 'tegrally joined, presents crating difficulties.
themelon'body, as well as cut. This form of device when made to the proper size is also useful for coring apples, etc., the cutter 21 being used. l
It will be observed that the device is ex-' tremelysimple ofconstruction and operation, and being of one piece, orof two pieces inno' sanitary or op- It will further beobserved that the cutter 00 16 maybe dis osed on an angle with respect to the axis 0 the corer to offer less resistance to the insertionof the corer in an object. I
: Now having described the invention and the preferred embodiment'thereof, it is to be understood that the said invention is to be limited, not'to the specific details herein set forth, but only by the scope of the claims ofasifonv f which follow:
' i 1. A combined corer and cutter including a ring shaped corer and a U shaped element having one leg secured thereto and having a second leg movable therein and towards said first leg, said movable leg carryinga cutter whose cutting plane is transverseto 7 the axis of the ring shaped corer.
2. A combined corer and cutter including 'aring shaped corer and a U shaped element having one leg secured thereto and having a second leg movable'therein and towards said 30 first leg, said movable leg carrying a cutter whose cutting plane is transverse to the axis of the ring shaped corer, said fixed leg carrying a'longitudinally arranged. cutter adapted to cooperate with said. ring shapedcutter to produce an elongated core.
v3. combined corer.'andcutter including a ring shaped corer and a U shaped element having one leg secured thereto and having a second leg movable therein and towards said first leg, said movable leg carrying a cutter whose cuttin plane is transverse to the axis of the ring shaped corer, said U shaped element being made of strap metal.
4. A combined corer and cutter including a ring shaped corer and a U shaped element having one leg secured thereto and having a second leg movable therein and towards said first leg, saidmovable leg carrying a, cutter J whose cutting plane is transverse to the axis of the ring shaped corer, said legs and cutter being integral with one another and with the bight portion of the U.
5. A combined corer and cutter including a ring shaped corer and a U shaped element having one leg secured thereto and having a second leg movable therein and towards said first-leg, said movable leg :carrying a cutter whose cutting planeis transverse to the axis of the ring shaped corer, said U'sha'ped element being madeiof strap metal; whereby it is substantially resilient.
6. A combined corer and cutterincluding 1 a ring shaped corer and a U shaped element having one leg secured theretoand having asecond legmovable therein and towardsv said; first .leg, "saidmovable leg carrying a cutter whose cuttingplane is transverse to the axis of the ring'shaped corer, said-U shapedmember serving as a handle for the r device.
7 .pA' fcombined-i corerand cutter including aring shaped corer and U shaped element f having one leg secured thereto and having 'a,secon d leg movable therein. and towards said first leg,.movable legicarrying. a cutter whose cutting plane is at transverse to the axis of the ringshape d corer, said U shaped member beingso'formed as to project no portions :outwardlyof saidjring shaped CQI'eI'. i I or a V 1 8. A combined corer and cutter lncluding' daring shaped corer and a U shaped element having one leg secured thereto and having a second leginovable therein and towards said first leg, said movable leg carrying a cutter whose cutting plane fisatftransverse to the axis of the ring shaped corer, the dimensions ofsaid cutter being such that it does not project into the core a substantial distance ex- 7 cept whenit is manually moved towards the V 1" "9, 'A'combined corer and cutter including inte rfere with i a ring shaped corjer and a U shaped element .45
having one leg secured thereto and having a second: leg. movable therein and towards said first leg, said movableleg carrying a cutter whose cutting. plane is at transverse to 'l the axls of the ring shaped corer, said mova-,
ble leg being so flexed as to tend to move awayfrom said fixed leg, whereby it does not proper coring.
