` This invention relates vgenerally to latch mechanism for vehicle doors and the like, and consists of certain novel features of construction, combinationsv and arrangements "of parts that will be hereinafter more fullydescribed and particularly pointed ,out 1n the appended claims. f
1n the accompanying drawings:`
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a door lock board with a latch Amechanism embodying my invention applied thereto and showing'by full and dotted lines respectively the operative and inoperative ppsitlons for the clogging means for the'outside bolt retracting means;
Figure 2 is a taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a ,vertical sectional view taken on the line SH3 of Figure l;
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the outside'bolt retracting member and handle;
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of vthe latch bolt and Shanks Referring nowr to the drawings, 1 is a latch case plate secured to the inner side of a lock board 1 upon the inner side of a vehicle door and having a lateral flange 2 at its forward edge attachable to the free edge ofthe door. 8 is a reciprocating latch bolt that is movable throughan `opening in the flange 2 for engagementY with a suitable keeperf (not shown) and having an integral shank4constituting a rearward extension and slidable upon the case plate 1. 5 is a relatively'long rod threadedlyconnected to the shank 4 and projecting rearwardly therefrom in substantially parallel relation to the case plate 1. 6 is a lateral-Hange struck out from the-case plate i intermedia te of its ends and having an opening 7 receivingthe rod 5, and 8 is a coil spring sleeved upon the rod 5 between the lateral flange 6 and the rear end of the shank 4 and normally holding the latch ybolt in projected position. a e" Y With the present construction the latch bolt 3 may be retracted from the'inner side of the door by a handle 9 having a shaft 10 that is j ournaled in an escutcheon plate ll'and auxiliary plate 12 upon the inner side of the door and that has a crank 13 at its inner end dishorizontal sectional view posed 'upon the inner sideofthe plate 12 and rterminallyconnected by a' linkvl4'to the rear `end of the rod f5, Preferablylthe adjacent end `portions 15 and l'respective'ly-of vvthe* crank and rod are` T-shape informand are received inthe -link 14 at oppositeendstherelV ofV Thus rotation of the handle 9 in analiticlockwise direction willcause the link14and rod 5 to retract the latch boltagainst the tension of the .spring 8.` Inlthis'connection it will be'noted that the handle 9 is longitudinally` curved and is substantially parallel to the inner side of the door, hence may also be used as a pull-to handle when itis desired to close or open the door. j j j Y i i y vPreferably the means operable on thel outer' 'sideof the door forretracting` the'latch bolt i comprises an Voperating handlef' of loop' formation having a substantially straight reciprocating'shank 21 slidable in a rose or escutcheon`22 uponthe' outer side of the door and provided at `its inner end with atrian gular portion 23.l that is received in an elon gated::longitudinallyA extendingl slot 24ir in the bolt shank 4. As'shown, the'inclined edge i 25 lof this triangular portion is at the" rear thereof and engages the rear-end of the slot 24' and is'adapted when the handle 20 and shank 21 are-pulled laterally outwardly in a direction atright angles' withrespect to theldoor tofcamf'the latch shank 4 IGlI'Waldly and thereby Vcause the bolt Sto be retracted against the tension of the spring' 8, VThe straight edge 26 of the triangular portion is at the.y front thereof 'and is normally spaced rearwardly with 'respect to the forward 'end 27 of the slot Thus'vwith thelat'ch mechanism described, the bolt Smay befretracted from the inside of the door b y manipulation of the inside handle 9without moving theoutside bolt retracting: y y
means. lLikewise dueto the link -14 connection betweenthe rod'and crank 13,\the boltv 3 'may be retracted-from the outside "of the i door by manipulation ofthe loop handle 20 Withoutfmoving the inside lbolt retracting means;L As" afresult, ythe bolt 3 Vmay beofperated from opposite sides of the door by in-V dependently operable means.`
Preferably a block is secured to the rear i face of the lateral flange 2in parallel relation to the bolt shank 4 and constitutes an abutment or stop for a shoulder 31 upon the vforward straight edge 2 6 of the triangular portion of the shank 21 `and also serves asaVV guide for said straight edge 26 when the triangular portion and shank are reciprocated inwardlyand outwardly by the handle 20. It will'ialso be noted that the hub 40 of the outside handle 20 is provided at its inner end Vupon' diametrically opposite sides thereof with triangular or wedge shape projections 40 which .normally engage similar recessesV 41 inthe forward rend of the rose'or escutch-Y eon hub 22 and thereby normally maintain the outside handle ink proper operative poy of the latch bolt .3 by any .unauthorized person. As shown thisisL-accomplished by the provisionofa lever 50 that is pivoted inten mediateof its endsupon apin 51 projecting laterally from the case plate 1 and that has .annend portion 52 that is slidableover the lcase plate into aV rearwardly openingslotv 53 in the triangular portion 23 of the outside handle shankand thereby prevents theV inclined edge 25 of said triangular portion from moving outwardly and functioning as a cam tov movethev latch bolt shank rearwardly. N ormallythe lever 50 isinan inclined inoperative or neutral position as illustrated in dotted lines,.lligure 1 but may be easily and quickly moved intooperative clogging position as illustrated-in solid lines, Figure 1, by manipulation of the lever aboutv its pivot. InVthis connection it will. be noted that the uppery end of this lever constitutes a handle portion always accessible from the inner side Vofthe door.. I C z l Thus, Vfromthe foregoing descriptionit will beapparent that I haveprovided an extremely simple latchn means and clogging means fortlie outside bolt retracting means that can beV manufactured at comparatively lowcost andthat can be readily installed u on the doors of motor vehicles andthe like.
oreover, it will be noted that the coil spring 8 not only holds the bolt 3in projected lposition, but due to the engagement of the rear end of the slot 24 in the bolt shank 4 with the .rear inclined edge 25 ofthe triangularv portion l.23j of the outside handle shank 21, the
lsaid shank and'handle20 are normally held by the spring 8 in operative bolt retracting y of the invention will be readily apparent, desire to have itunderstood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown .and described and that such changes may be resorted towhen desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed. v
l What I claim as my inventionis:V y y 1.1In a door latch mechanism, a case plate attachable to the inner side of a door, a latch bolt having a shank slidable over vsaid case plate, and means operable from the outer side of a door for actuating said bolt including a longitudinally movable member having a cam portion .between thebolt and case plate engageabl'e with the former and limited inV its inward longitudinal movement by thelatter. v
2. In a door latch mechanism, a latch bolt having a reciprocating shank, a reciprocating member movable in avplanie at substantially right anglesto theshank to move the bolt,
and a support for the bolt including a caseV plate constituting a'bearingfor the sli ank and an abutment for the reciprocating member.,
3. In a door latch mechanism, a case plate attachable to the inner side of av door, a latch bolt having avshank movable over one side of the case plate, actuating means for the bolt including a reciprocating member hav,- ing a cam portion between the case plate and bolt and engageable with thelatter, and dogging means for the member including-a lever movable between the case plate'and'shank into engagement fwiththe cam.A
4. In a door latch mechanism, a latch bolt -having a sliding shank, and actuatingy means for said bolt including a reciprocatingrod movable in a plane substantialy aty right-angles to said'bolt and 4provided at one end for said bolt including a reciprocating rod l movable ina plane substantially at right angles to the bolt and-terminating in a camithat is engageable with the bolt and ythat has a slot for receiving a suitable dogging mem;
ber. u Y InA testimony whereof I aiiX my signature. L J. JANONIS.
position] kThus with this construction only *y one spring is requiredv andthe usual outside handle'spring assembly has'been dispensed f with entirely.
