WANAMAKER V I MOVABLE PLATFORM FOR STOCKING DRYING MACHINES Filed Feb. 8, 1930 2 Sheets-Shem 2 Patented Nov. 24, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HARRY F. WANAMAKER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNO-R TO PROCTOR 4 8a SCHWARTZ, IN CORPORATED, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A COB-PORA- TION or PENNSYLVANIA MOVABLE PLATFORM non STOCKING- DRYING 'MAcHINEs Application filed February, 8, 1930. Serial No. 426,867.
This invention relates to an improvement for the hosiery drying machine shown in the U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,126,619, dated I June 26, 1915, equipped with a receiving table substantially the same as that shown in U. S.
Letters Patent No. 1,189,064, dated June 27,
The first of thesepatentsdiscloses a hosiery drying machine wherein the stockings are manually placed on hosiery drying forms which traverse a predetermined path defined by suitable guides provided on the bed of the machine, the pathway being continuous and passing through a drying chamber which is provided on the bed of the machine.
This patent also discloses mechanical means for stripping the dried stockings from the hosiery forms, after they emerge from the drying chamber, apparatus being provided whereby the hosiery form is turned from a normal substantially vertical plane to asubstantially horizontalplane, the foot portion of the hosiery form with a stocking thereon falling into and being engaged by mechanically operable means which grip the foot of the stocking and as the stocking form continues to move in the horizontal plane, it is drawn from within the stocking, the stocking being held by the said mechanical stripper at the foot portion thereof.
This patent also discloses a movable platform which is adapted to reciprocate in a single horizontal plane below the plane of ing form, as the stocking is being removed therefrom, the leg portion of the stocking falling onto the movable platform, wheremovement of the horizontally disposed stock- 7 'trate the principle of the present invention as they pass from the delivery end of the movable platform and drop through the intervening'space onto the receiving table frequently become wrinkled, requiring theopq erators undivided attention and requiring handlingby the operator in order that the stockings as they are piled one above the other on the receiving table will all be perfectly flat.
The object of the present invention is to I eliminate the necessity for the constant attention of the operator, by providing a movable platform which is adapted to be reciprocated in substantially the same manner as the movable platform disclosed in the first of the above mentioned patents, but, instead of the platform moving in a single horizontal plane above the curved surface of the receiving table, the movable platform, in the present application, is movable in a curved path which dips downwardly toward the curved hosiery-supportingsurface of the receiving table, bringing the deliveryend of the platform in close proximity to the said curved surface of the receiving table, or to the last stocking laid thereon, when the stocking is being delivered, whereby the stocking instead of falling through considerable space from the delivery end of the movable platform to the receiving table, will be gently laid on the table, by' the delivery end of the movable platform, thereby obviating the possibilities of wrinkling the stockings as they are piled one upon the other on the receiving table.
The apparatus forming the subject of the present application will be fully disclosed hereinafter, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, of which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the movable table forming the subject of the present invention and showing suflicient of the 'dryi'ng machine and the receiving table to illusapplied thereto; and v V, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus shown in Fig. l.
As disclosed in the first of the above men tioned patents the hosiery drying forms are, supported on suitable carriers which are adapted to move over the bed 1 of the mai chine, the carriers having projections which extend through a guide slot 3 formed in the bed of the machine, the said projections being engaged by suitable spiral'cams or conveyer screws which effect the traversing of the ed in bearings 9 and 10 carried by the bed 1 of the machine; On the opposite end of the shaft 8 is a gear wheel 11 meshing with v a gear Wheel 12, which is rotatably mounted on a stud 13 secured in the bed of the machine. Oarried by the gear 12is a crank 14, by which the movable table 15 is adapted to be operated.
1 The delivery end 16 of the movable platform 15, as shown in the drawings, is adapted to lie above the curved surface 17 of the stocking-receiving table 18, which is positioned immediately adjacentthe bed 1 of the drying machine. The movable platform 15 is supported adjacent its opposite end on, and by, the upper ends of a pair of pivotally mounted arms 19 and 20, respectively, the arms 19 and 20 being pivotally connected at 21 and 22 to the movable platform 15, and
their opposite ends 23 and 24 being pivotally mounted on a slide head 25.
A The slide head 25 is adapted to be carried by, and adapted for vertical reciprocation on,
avertically disposed guideway which, in the 7 present instance, comprises a bar 26. One end of the guide bar 26 is mounted in 'a bracket 27 secured to one of the legs 2 of the machine, while the upper end of the guide bar 26 is secured in a bracket 28 secured to the bed of the machine.
' Pivotallv mounted at 29 on the bracket 28 is one end of a lever 30, the opposite end of which is pivotally attached. as at 31, to the platform-supporting arm 19, in the present instance, intermediate the ends 21 and 23 thereof.
" Pivotally attached to the lever 30 at the point 32, which is disposed intermediate the opposite ends of the said lever 30, is one end of a reach rod 33, the opposite end of which is rotatably mounted on the crank pin 34 carried by the outer end of the crank arm 14.
As the cam shaft 5 is rotated the platformoperating shaft, 8 is consequently rotated which, through the gear wheels 11 and 12, rotates the crank arm 14 around the stud 13.
" Rotation of the crank 14 causes a rocking of the lever 30 about its pivot 29, through the medium of the reach rod 33.
The lever 30 is adapted to support the platform 15 and is also adapted to effect itsmovement through a predetermined path, which in the present instance dips down toward the curved supporting surface 17 of the receiving table 18, at the same time as the stocking 00, which lies partly on the platform 15 and partly on the table 18, the foot portion 00 of the stocking relying on the said curved surface 17 of the receiving table where it had been deposited by the mechanical stripper above referred to, is delivered from the delivery end 16 of the platform 15.
As the delivery end 16 of the movable platform moves along its devious path y, and toward the curved surface 17 of the receiving table 18, the welt end 09 of the stocking is drawn over the platform 15 toward the delivery end 16 thereof, the foot portion m of the stocking which is contacting with the table, or a stocking previously laid thereon, providing suflicient traction to cause the leg portion and the welt portion 00 of the stocking to move over and off the platform 15 as the said platform is withdrawn from under the said stocking.
As shown in Fig. 1, the lowest point in the path y, whichis followed by the delivery end 16 of the platform 15, brings the said delivery end of the platform into a position very close to the curved surface 17 of the supporting table 18 as the stocking is being delivered to the table and thereby gently lays the leg portion w of the stocking on the table, or on a previously deposited stocking thereon, without permitting the new stocking to become laterally with respect to the receiving table 18, causes the said platform 15 to be moved to its extreme position shown in broken lines in Fig. 1'.
During the entire movement of the table 15 the said table is maintained in a substantially horizontal position by the supporting arms 19 and 20, which are in substantial parallel relation to each other throughout the entire movement ofthe table. I i
As above noted, rotation of the crank 14 causes'a rocking of the supporting lever 30 about its pivot 29. As the said lever 30 rocks about its pivot it causes a rocking movement of the arm19 about its pivot 23, and due to the relation of the pivots 29 and 23 and the pivot point 31, at which the outer end of the lever 30 is pivotally connected to the arm 19, the slide head 25 will be caused to move down wardly 0n the guide 26, thus causing the said dipping movement of the platform 15 to ward the receiving table 18, the arm 20,..due to its parallel relation to the arm 19, following the said arm 19 in all its. movements and thereby maintaining the table 15 substantially horizontal throughout its entire movement- The return of the platform 15, from its broken line to its full line position in Fig. 1, is effected by the continuedrotation ,of the crank 14, which causes a reverse movement of the elements and re-establishes the platform 15 in position over the table 18 to receive the next stocking.
I claim:
