Referring to" Fig.V .55. this shows a'machine .of the 4ordinaay type wi-thi. this invention-- applied thereto. Y In this machine, there is a die itil carriage 10 on Awhich-is located aj'chuck l1` vin 9 .which is mounted-1 their xprinting pla-te or 'die '12. '.Thesethree partsxarerec-iprocated in the .directionoflthe-arrow. 'i-When inthe position shown the rant 13 risesan'd the palper-located on the 4die .is pressed-,against the counter 14:. TheA 'pri-nt isnmade on thej lower face. .of-the sheet .between ythe die l2 .and the counter 14.
Accordi-ng tof this inventionr-atransverse horizontalcshaft 15..is employed which carries fi a doctor 16. This doctor is so located that it can act on the die or plate 12 in the manner shown in Fig. 9, while the die is passing back to its printing position. It will be understood that first the die moves as indicated in Fig. 8 with an inking roll 17 irl-contact with it and the doctor out of contact with it, as shown in that figure. Then when it moves back, the doctor comes down on the plate and scrapes the ink from it on its last motion toward printing position. The ink gathers on top of the lower edge of the doctor 16 and this invention has to do with the removal of that ink before the next inking operation. It is found in practice that the amount of ink left on the doctor 16-is so small that'it will not run off and cause any trouble if it is wiped ,off after each inking operation, although if left on wit-hout wiping for several operations, it will begin to drip ofil Vand cause trouble for that reason. Y
For the purpose of operating this machine, two shafts 20'and21are used. Although the gearing is not shown herein, it will'be understood that these shafts are connected with each other and with the shaft which controls the reciprocation of the die chuck so that they work in a certain sequence. The shaft 2O oscillates whilethe shaft 21 rotates.
'The shaft 21 is provided with a gear 22 meshing with a pinion 23 on a shaft which has a crank 24 operating a link 25. `This link is vconnected with an arm 26 fixed on a shaft 27 provided with a fixed arm 28. Therefore, a rotation of the shaft 21 will swing this arm 28 back and forth. When it is swung inwardly toward the frame of the machine, it pushes the shaft 15 with it, and when it swings back,
la spring 29 brings the shaft back again.,V This of that shown and tothe dotted lineposition in Fig. 1;
At the top of this link 34 is connected ak spring 36a also connected with the top of the Aarm 31 for holding the roll 32 upwardly as far as'it will go and with yielding pressure on the print-ing plate when ink contact with it.
To the top ofthe link`34 is connected another link 37 which is pivoted to the short arm of a bell crank 38 pivoted on the frame of the machine. This bell crank is normally vheld down at its front end by a spring 39 and is provided with a pivoted link 40 'which is ypivotally connected to anotherbell crank 41 carrying uanother cam roll 42. On the shaft 21 is a cam 43 having two circular arcuate Vgoes down'with it and forces the roll over the rounded end of the cam to the dotted line positionin Fig. 1. Also the link 37 is pulled down as indicated and the link 40 also moved downto inove the roll 42 into contact with the cam 43, but at present this is on the part of the cam which has the larger radius. The effect of the ycam is to move the doctor far back to an inclined position and the effect of the cam 43 at this time isto hold it in the position shown in Fig. 8 where it does not touch the plate and keep it in that position until the cam 43 rotates around to bring the lower part of its cam surface into registration with the roll 42. This allows this roll to move inwardly further, urged by the spring 39. This results in swinging the link down a little more and moving the link 37, and with it the link 34, backwardly away from the guide surface 36. The real effect, however, is to bring lthe cani 35 a little back of its dotted lineposition and to allow the roll 32 to move withit so as to bring the doctor 16 down on the die 12 as shown in Fig. 9. The doctor is held against the inked die by the spring 36a.
Pivotally mounted on brackets 45 carried by the die carriage 10 is a doctor cleaning frame 46. This frame carries a small receptacle or tank 47, which is provided, projecting up from the top, with an inverted L- shaped stop 43 adapted to come up back of the doctor, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 10, and back up thev doctor while it is being cleaned. The tank 47 is held in place on the ,frame 46 by springs 44.
4Also mounted on this frame 46 is a shaft 49. Two arms 50 and 56 are fixed on this shaft. To the arm 50 is pivotally connected a link 51 carrying a rotatable stud 52 to which is secured a bar 53. This bar is also secured to an oscillatable shaft 54 located on the frame 46 and carrying fixed thereto a scraper blade 55. It will be seen that this shaft 54 with its scraper blade can be turned and by the link 51.
On the shaft 21 isa cam 57, which by means of a roll 58, pivoted arm 59, and link 60, operates the arm 56 and the scraper blade 55.
The doctor cleaning frame 46, as previously stated, is pivoted at 61 and is adapted to be raised and lowered about this pivot by a link 62 which is operated by a lever 63, roll 64 and cam 65 on the shaft 21. By raising the scraper blade will lrise'above the bottom" scraper blade carried byfsaid frame, meansV for lifting said frame-to a position in which of the doctor, and means ffor swinging the scraper blade against :the doctor, 'whereby thescraper blade will move down along the surface of the doctoras the f frame moves y down, to remove the ink yfrom the doctor.
11. In an inking device,rthe combination with a` doctor for removing the surplus ink from an intaglio die or printing plate,a shaft on which said doctorismounted, means Vfor turning theshaft from a position in whichV the doctor engages the printing plate toa position wien, the doctor hanging down from 4the shaft, a frame hung pivotally, a scraper blade carried by said frame, and movable bottom of-` the doctor, and means operated by the other zam for swinging the scraper blade against the doctor, whereby the scraper blade fac' will move down along thefsur'face .of the 'doofv tor as theframe movesfback, to remove thel ink from the doctor.
