PETER SWEENEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM BOURGOYNE BISHOP, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATING COMPOUNDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,343, dated October 17, 1876; applicationfiled March 31, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER SWEENEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Compound for Lubricating and other Purposes, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to a compound made of beeswax, boiled oil, graphite, and mercury, to which may also be added gelatine, bole Armenia, with or without paper-pulp, the oil being heated and mixed with the remaining ingredients, and the mass being finally molded to the required shape, so that the same can be used with advantage in journal-boxes, or for other purposes; or it may. be used for impregnating gaskets or other packing-rings-of hemp or other material.
In carrying out my invention, I take paperpulp, boiled oil, bees-wax, graphite, and mercury, in about the following proportion: Paperpulp, one pound; bees-wax, four ounces; boiled oil, two pounds; graphite, one pound; mercury, eight ounces; and, if desired, I also add bole Armenia, two ounces; gelatine, two ounces.
I first heat the oil, and then produce an intimate mixture of the paper-pulp, bees-Wax, and graphite (with or without bole Armenia and gelatine) by stirring these ingredients to-' gether with the heated oil, and heating the mass for about ten hours to from 250 to 500, and while the mixture is still hot I stir in the mercury, and after I have produced a homogeneous mass I let the same cool.
My compound can be used with great advantage for impregnating gaskets or packingrings for steam pistons, cylinders, or other similar purposes, or it can be used as a lining for journal-boxes; and in this last-named case I prefer to mold my compound under pressure into sheets of from three-eighths to one-half an inch in thickness, which I place edgewise into the journal-boxes, said sheets being made to alternate with supporting-layers of rawhide or other equivalent material.
For light machinery my compound can be used as a lining for the entire journal-box, being molded to fit into such box in the same manner as brass or other metallic shells are now used.
I also find that a good compound for lubricating purposes is obtained without the paperpulp.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A compound for lubricating purposes, made of graphite, boiled oil, bees-wax, mercury, bole Armenia, and gelatine, said ingredients being mixed together substantially in the manner and in about the proportions specified.
2. A compound for lubricating purposes in which is combined paper-pulp, graphite, boiled oil, bees-Wax, and mercury, mixed together substantially in the manner and for the object specified.
