This invention relates to concrete :railroad ties, andhas for one ofits objects to provide a tie of this character embodying novel reinforcing means which shall be adapted to prevent the tie from cracking, breaking or crushing under any shocks, Jars or loads to which'it may be subjected by 'a passingcary or train.l
The invention has fora further objecttoy s provide a tie of thecharacter stated which shall embody rail plates recessed in the' upper surfaces of the end portions of the tie fand havinganchors embeddedin the tie-in such manner as to firmly hold the plates in .1 place.
The invention has for a further object to provide a tie of the character stated wherein the rail pla-tes shall have serrated portions for engagement by serrated portions of rail clamps secured to the plates by bolts, the engagement between the plates and clamps preventing the clamps and consequently the rails" from having any inward or outward move- Inent with respect to the tie.
The invention has for a further object to provide a tie of the character stated wherein the rail plates shall be provided in the serrated portions thereoffwith keyhole slotsfor the reception of the bolts, the formation of the slots permitting theboltst'o' be readily n applied to the plate after the application of the plateV to the tie and also permitting the quires. f l
The invention has for afurther object to provide a tie of the character'stated wherein the reinforcing means shall have portions thereof locateddirectly below the rail plates, and wherein such portions shall` be spaced downwardly from the rail plates sufficiently to arrange substantial portions ofthe vtie therebetween, such tie portions insulating the rail plates from the reinforcing means and thus preventing the short circuiting of opposf ing rails, and such tie portionspermitting the formation in the ties of recesses located below the rail plates for the reception of the heads of the bolts and to carry olf any water passing through the bolt receiving lslots of the rail plates.'y
With the foregoing-and I'other `view, the nature-'ofwhich will, appeara the description proceeds, the invention consists in the construction,*combination and arrangev ment of parts hereinafter fullydescribedand claimed, and illustrated in the vaccompanying partly in horizontal sectionV of a concreterailroad tie embodying my' invention,

Referring `in detail tothe drawings, f1 ldesignates al concrete railroad tie which, in
accordance with Inyvinvention, Vis provided with a reinforcing bar 2 and, rail plates 3.
plane indicated bythe, line 8&8 lo fy The reinforcing bar 2 fis completely er'nbedded in and extends longitud inally of the "tie l, and the rail plates are recessed inthe upper surfaces of the end portions of the tie. The reinforcing bar 2 comprises 'a central portion 2a and end portions 2b, the .cen-
ltral portion being, greater in heightffthank the end portions and located between the rail plates 3, and the end portions being 4located belowgand spaced fr oumjthe railplates. The;
' ing with the tie portion passing through said opening to hold the bar against endwise move- 4 ment with `respect to the tie, and reinforcing rods embedded in and extending longitudinally of the tie at opposite sides of the rear edge portion of the bar. Y
3. In la concrete railroad tie, a reinforcing bar of V-form in vertical section and embedded in and extending longitudinally of the tie, the web of the barbeing provided with a longitudinal opening through which passes a portion of the tie, and the end portionsof the bar having their upper sides located in a plane below the upper side of the central portion of the bar to provide shoulders cooperating with the tie portion passing through said opening to hold the bar against endwise movement with respect to the tie, and reinforcing rods embedded in and extending longitudinally of the tie at opposite sides of the rear edge portion of the bar, the rods being each of sectional formation with their sections located in different horizontal planes and their inner ends arranged in overlapped relation, and an insulating member coupling the overlapped end portions of the sections of each rod.
Il. In a concrete railroad tie, a reinforcing bar of T-form invertical section and embedded in and extending longitudinally of the tie, the web of the bar being provided with a longitudinal opening through which passes a portion of the tie, and the end portions of the bar havingtheir upper sides located in a plane below the upper-side of the central portion of the bar to provide shoulders cooperating with the tievportion passing through said' opening to hold the bar against endwise movement with respect to the tie, reinforcing rods embedded in and extendinglongitudinally ofthe tie at opposite sides ofthe rear edge portion of the bar, and transversev rods embedded inthe tic below the bar and longitudinal rods, the longitudinal and transverse rods having angular terminals holding them against .endl wise movement with respect to the tie.
embedded in the tie and a Central portion of greater height than its end portions, the bar being embedded in f and extending longitudinally of the tie, rail v plates -recessed in the upper side of the tie directly above the-,end portions of the bar,
and anchoring elements secured to the rail plates andV embedded in the 'tie atopposite sides of the end portions of the bar. v Y
7. In a concrete railroad tie, a reinforcing Y Y bar of T-form 1n vertical section and having a central portion of greater `height than-VVV its end portions, the bar beingl embedded in and extending longitudinally of the tie, rail plates recessed in the Aupper side of the tie directly above the end portions of the bar, and
anchoring elements secured to the rail plates an'dembedded in the tie at opposite sides of the end portions ofthe bar, the rail plates being provided withserrated Y ing slots, and the tie being providedV below such portions of the rail plates with recesses having bottom walls inclining downwardly in the direction of the vertical sides of the tie. v
8. In a concrete railroad tie, areinforcing bar of T-form in vertical section and'embedded in and extending longitudinally of the tie, the webof the bar being provided with a longitudinal opening throughvwhich passes a portion of the tie, and the end portions of the bar having their upper sides located in a plane -below the upper side of the central portion of the bar to provide shoulders cooperating with passing through said opening to hold the to the tie, reinforcing rods embedded in and extending longitudinally of the tiev at oppo` below the bar and longitudinal rods, the longitudinal and transverserods having angular l terminals holding them against endwise movement with respect to the tie, Vthe vrail plates recessed in the upper side of the tie,
and anchors secured to the rail plates'and gular lower ends.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ax my l 5. In a concrete railroad tie, rail plates.,
