More particularly the present invention pertains to a vibrating machine that includes a vertically movable carriage having-a massage unit pivotallymounted thereon, means being provided for effecting an "oscillatory =01 lateral movement as Well as :a recipro'cato'ry to be imparted to the massaging unit.

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a tubular support that issecured in a vertical manner in "spaced relation with respect to a door, Wallorthe-like shown at A by suitable attaching brackets indicated at 2. An elongated plate li ke body 3 is arranged vertically against the front side of the tubular support 1 and is adjustably secured thereon through the medium of the upper and lower clamping members 4 and 5, respective- 1 support, the fastening means associated with each clamp being indicated at 6.
An arm 7 extends forwardly from theupper endof the tubular support 1 andthis arm is slotted longitudinally. A cable 8 is secured at one end to the upper end of the plate like body 3, said cable being trained over a suitable pulley 9, at the rear end portion of the slotted arm 7, the other endof the cable extending'dcwnwardly into the tubular support l and being attached to a counter balancing weight 10 that is shown in the dotted lines in Figure 2.
This construction provides a means whereby to prevent the sudden downward movement of the plate-like body 3 when the securing means for the upper and lower clamps are loosened to permit vertical adjustment of the plate-like body with respect to the stationary support.
Arranged on the front face of the plate-like body 3 is the substantially elliptical shaped track 11, the elongated sides of which are" straight and disposed parallel with respect to each other. The purpose of this track will be presently described.
A series of alined vertically spaced pins 12 project from the front face of the plate like body 3 within the central portion of the track 11 whereby to provide what I term a rack and the outer ends of the pins extend beyond the outer edge of the track 11 as clearly shown in the drawings.
Arranged for vertical slidable movement along the plate like body 3 is the carriage denoted generally by the numeral 13. This carriage is of U-shaped formation in plan elevation and formed on the inner faces of the arms 14 are the spaced laterally disposed ribs or flanges 15 and 16 respectively which cooperate to form guide channels for receiving the respective side edges of the plate like body 3 as is more clearly disclosed in Figure 3 of the drawings. This arrangement will maintain the carriage 13 1n proper position with respect to the plate like body and the base or crown portion 17 is spaced with respect to the front face of the plate like body. A boss 18 is formed on the outer face of the base portion 17 adjacent the upper end of the carriage to provide means for pivotally mounting the massage unit 19 on the carriage 13.
The massage unit includes a casing 20, the rear wall of which is pivotally secured to the boss 18 as at 21. A projection 22 is formed on the front face of the crown portion of the U-shaped carriage adjacent the lower end thereof for engagement with the adjacent portion of the rear wall of the casing 20.
A cable 23 is secured at one end to the top of the casing 20. and this cable is trained over suitable pulleys 24 and 25 mounted in the slotted arm 7. The other end of the cable extends downwardly within the tubular support 1 and is secured to a counter balancing weight 26 which weight is disposed through i the tubular counter balancing weight 10.
Arranged within the casing 20 is an electric motor 27 of any conventional construction. One end of the drive shaft 28 projects through the front side of the casing and is adapted to detachably support a massaging or vibrating element 29 that may be of the conventional construction, and which massaging element is adapted to engage against the body during the vibration of the vibrating machine. Secured on the rear end of the drive shaft 28 is a driving pinion 30, and this construction is more clearly disclosed in Figure 4 of the drawings.
Journaled for rotation to the rear side of the casing 20 below the drive shaft 28 is a driven shaft 31. A sleeve 32 is secured on the inner or rear end of the driven shaft 31 for rotation therewith andthe outer end portion of this sleeve engages with the inner peripheral face of the elliptical shaped track 11 in the manner as clearly illustrated in Figure 4. A star wheel gear 33 is carried by the intermediate portion of the sleeve 32, the teeth of this gear being adapted for cooperation with the vertically spaced pin 12 to provide a rack and pinion structure for a purpose to be presently described in detail.
Splined on the forward end of the driven shaft 31 for disposition within the casing .20 is a gear wheel 34 that is adapted to engage with the driving pinion whereby to provide means for rotating the shaft 31. A collar 35 is carried by the rear face of the slidab-le gear 34 and cooperating with this collar is a yoke 36 formed on the inner end of a laterally disposed lever 37. This lever extends through a slot 38 formed in an en largement 39 provided at one side of the casing 20. A forwardly extending arm 40 is operatively associated with the outer end of the lever 37 for operating the same whereby to move the gear 34 into or out of engagement with the driving pinion 30 and a handle 41 is associated with the free end of the arm 40. A guide 42 is arranged on the outer face of the enlarged portion 39 within which the arm 40 is operable and this detail is clearly shown in Figures 2 and 5 of the drawings.
The operation of m improved vibrating machine may be briefly stated as follows. The plate body 3 is adjusted to the proper height on the stationary tubular support 1 and when the gear 34 is in mesh with the driving pinion 30 and the motor 27 is turned on, the drive shaft 28 will operate the massaging element 29 and at the same time drive the driven shaft 31 and by reason of the sleeve and pinion carried by the inner end of the driven shaft cooperating with the elliptical shaped track and the pins 12, the carriage 13 will move upwardly and downwardly. and at certain intervals. the massaging unit 19 will be caused to swing on the pivot 21. thus affording lateral movement for laterally moving the massaging element 19 across the body and this will obviate the necessity of the person using the vibrating machine having to bend over from one side to the other, such as would be the case where the massage unit moves wholly in the same vertical plane during the reciprocatory movement of the carriage on the support.
If it is not desired to reciprocate the carriage and the massage unit carried thereby, the lever 37 is actuated to move the gear 34 out of engagement withthe driving pinion 30. When the motor 27 is then operated, the massaging element 29 will turn with the shaft 28 at a relatively fast rate of speed. The counterbalancing weight 26 will permit the massage unit 19 to be disposed at any predetermined vertical position when desired, and said unit will remain in its adjusted position as long as the gear 34 is held out of engagement with the driving pinion 30.
It will'thus be seen from the foregoing description that I have provided a vibrating machine that will at all times be positive and efiicient in its operation, and due to its simplicity, the parts can be readily and easily adjusted. A vibrating machine of this character is particularly adapted to be secured on a door or other vertical support, although I do not Wish to limit myself to the particular manner in which said machine may be mounted on a support. Also a machine of this character will be strong and durable, yet inexpensive in its construction.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be. understood that minor changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a vibrating machine, a support, a carriage mounted for vertical movement thereon, a massage unit pivotally arranged on the carriage for movement therewith, and coacting means between the massage un1t and the support for effecting the movement of a message unit in a circuitous path with respect to the support, said means including an endless track arranged on the support, a driven shaft carried by the massage unit, an element secured on the driven shaft having engagement with the endless track, a rack arranged vertically on the support within the confines of the track, and a pinion carried by the track engaging element for cooperation with the rack.
2. In a vibrating machine, a vertically arranged support, a vertically adjustable base secured on the support, an endless track arranged on the front face of the base, a rack on the front face of the base within the endless track, a carriage arranged for vertical movement on the base, a massage unit pivotally mounted on the carriage, and means carried by the massage unit for cooperation with the track and rack respectively to effect the movement of the massage unit in a circuitous path with respect to the support.
3. In a vibrating machine, a vertically arranged support, a vertically ad ustable base secured on the support, an endless track arthe massage unit, a gear splined on the driv-- en shaft for coperationwith the driving pinranged on the front face of the base, a rack on the front face of the base within the end less track, a carriage arranged for vertical movement on the base, a massage unit pivota l lgy mounted on the carriage, said massage nnit including a motor, a massage element secured :on one end of the drive shaft of the motor, a driving pinion on the other end of the drive shaft, a driven shaft carried by ion, and means carried by the driven shaft for cooperation with the track and rack respectively to efl'ect the movement of the -movement on the base, a massage unit pivotally mounted on the carriage, said massage unit including a motor, a massage element secured on one end of the drive shaft of the motor, a driving pinion on the other end of the :drive shaft, a driven shaft carried by the massage unit, a gear splined on the driven shaft for cooperation with the driving pinion, means carried by "the'driven shaft for cooperation with the track and rack respectively to effect the movement of the massage -unit in a circuitous path with respect to the support, said last mentioned "means including a sleeve carried by the driven shaft and having one end portion thereof engaging with the peripheral edge of the track, and a pinion formed on the sleeve for cooperation with the teeth of the rack.
5. In a vibrating machine, a vertically arranged support, a vertically adjustable base secured on the support, an endless track arranged on the front face of the base, a rack on the front face of the base within the endless track, a carriage arranged for'vertical movement on the base, a massage unit pivotally mounted on the carriage, said massage unit including a motor, a massage element secured on one end of the drive shaft of the motor, a driving pinion on the other end of the drive shaft, a-d-riven shaft carried by the --massa-ge unit, a gear splined on the driven shaft for cooperation with the driving pinion, and means carried by the driven shaft for cooperation with the track and rack respectively to effect the movement oft-he massage unit in a circuitous path with respect to *the support, and means for moving the slid on the front face of the base within the endless track, a carriage arranged for vertical movement on the base, a massage unit pivotally mounted on the carriage, said massage unit including a motor, a massage element secured on one end of the drive shaft of the motor, a driving pinion on the other end of the drive shaft, a driven shaft carried by the massage unit, a gear splined on the driven shaft for cooperation with the driving pinion, means carried by the driven shaft for cooperation with the track and rack respectively to effect the movement of the massage unit in a circuitous path with respect to the support, means for moving the slidable gear on the driven shaft into and out of engagement with the driving pinion, and a counter balancing weight connected with the massage unit to support the same in any vertically disposed position when the slidable gear is disengaged from the driving pinion.
7. In a vibrating machine, a support, a vertically adjustable base secured on the sup port, counter balancing means for maintaining the base in any vertically adjusted position on the support, an endless track arranged on the front face of the base, a rack on the front face of the base within the endless track, a carriage arranged for vertical movement on the base, counter balancing means for maintaining the carriage in any vertically adjusted position on said base, a massage unit pivotally mounted on the carriage, and means carried by the massage unit for cooperation with the track and the rack re spectively to effect the movement of the massage unit in a circuitous path with respect to the support.
8. In a vibrating machine, a support, a carriage mounted for vertical movement thereon, a massage unit pivotally mounted adjacent its upper end to the carriage and movable therewith, and coacting means between the lower end of the massage unit and the support for imparting reciprocating movement to the massage unit longitudinally of the support and transversely thereof at the ends of the support.
9. In a vibrating machine, a vertical support, a vertically adjustable base mounted on the support, counter-balancing means for maintaining the base in any vertically adjusted position on the support, means to releasably secure said base in an adjusted position upon the standard, a massage unit slidably mounted for vertical reciprocating movement on the base, means actuated from the massage unit for imparting movement thereto, means to interrupt operation of the last mentioned means, and counter-balancing means for maintaining the massage unit in any vertically adjusted position on the base.
