D. COLE ROTARY DRUM STRUCTURE Filed July 27, 1928 Patented Nov. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DAVID COLE, OF EL PASO, TEXAS ROTARY DRUM STRUCTURE Application filed Ju1y 27,
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which, 7
Fig. l is a transverse section of a. drum, with parts broken away, showing my invention applied.
Fig. 2 is an axial section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The drum is composed in part of two hollow cylindrical sections 6 and 7 with mating flanges 8 and 9. Annular interengaging shoulders, indicated at 11, are used to maintain concentricity, thus relieving the bolts 12, which connect these flanges, of shear stresses to which they would otherwise be subjected.
The flange 8 has a series of spaced radially projecting lugs 14. These lugs subtend uniform angles about the axis of the drum and the angle subtended by the intervals between lugs is uniform and preferably slightly exceeds the angle subtended by each lug.
The flange 9 is provided with a similar series of lugs 15 and when the parts are assembled the lugs on the two flanges alternate with one another. One side face of each lug serves as a. pad against which mating lugs on the annulus may be mounted. To permit the annulus to be reversed so as to seat alternatively against either set of lugs without eifect on the relative position of this annulus, the pad surfaces on the two flanges should be located symmetrically with respect to the plane of meeting of the two sections and should face in opposite directions for the two series. The simplest way is to form the pad surfaces in this plane, and this arrangement is shown in the drawings.
The demountable annulus, here shown as a gear having a rim 16, has an annular inter- 1928. Serial No. 295,753.
nally projecting web 17 stiii'ened by radial ribs 18. At the inner margin of the web are spaced lugs 19 designed to seat upon either the lugs 1% or 15. The annulus must be re versed to change from one to the other arrangement, and where the pad surfaces of the lugs 1i and 15 are in the meeting surface of the flanges 8 and 9 (as shown) the sealing surface of the lugs 19 should be in the median plane AB of the annulus (rim 16) An annular shoulder 21 centers the annulus on the lugs to which it is attached and relieves the bolts 22 of part of the shear stress. The annulus preferably is divided diametrically or otherwise to facilitate assembly as indicated at 23. Bolts 2 1- connect the sections.
The invention offers a simple and inexpensive construction which meets the peculiar requirements of service. While the embodiment shown is believed to be simplest and best, it is illustrative only, and other arrangements within the scope of the claims may be made.
lVhat is claimed is,
1. The combination of two annular sections having peripheral abutting flanges by which they are connected; a series of spaced lugs projecting beyond the margin of each flange, the lugs on one flange alternating with those of the other flange; an annulus having spaced lugs adapted to mate selectively with the spaced lugs of either flange in relatively reversed positions of the annulus; and means for connecting the parts together.
2. The combination of two annular sections having peripheral abutting flanges by which they are connected; a series of spaced lugs projecting beyond the margin of each flange and having pads, the lugs on one flange alter nating with those on the other flange and the pads on the two flanges being symmetrically arranged relatively to the meeting plane of the flanges; an annulus having spaced lugs adapted to mate selectively with the pads on the spaced lugs of either flange; and means for connecting the parts together.
3. The combination of two annular sections having peripheral abutting flanges by which they are connected; a series of spacedlugs projecting beyond the margin of each flange and having supporting faces in plane with the abutting faces of the two flanges, the lugs on one flange alternating with those on the other flange; an annulus having spaced lugs with supporting faces in the median plane of the annulus, said lugs being adapted by the reversal of the annulus to seat selectively upon the lugs of either flange; and means for connecting the parts together.
4. The combination of two annular sections having peripheral abutting flanges by which they are connected; a series of spaced lugs projecting beyond the margin of each flange, the lugs on one flange alternating with those of the other flange; an annulus separable into two parts substantially on a diametric plane having spaced lugs adapted to mate selectively with the spaced lugs of either flange; and means for connecting the parts together.
5. The combination of two annular sections having peripheral abutting flanges by which they are connected; a series of spaced lugs projecting beyond the margin of each flange and having supporting faces in plane with the abutting faces of the two flanges, the lugs on one flange alternating with those on the other flange; an annulus separable into two parts substantially on a diametric plane having spaced lugs with supporting faces in the median plane of the annulus, said lugs being adapted by the reversal of the annulus to seat selectively upon the lugs of either flange; and means for connecting the parts together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
DAVID COLE.
