Description

T. R. JOHNSON.
CAR SEAT.
Patented Oct. 10, 1876.
. JAMES R QSGOOD 8: CO BOSTON UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. JOHNSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,174, dated October 10, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. JOHNSON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Reversible Oar-Seats, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to so construct the back of a car-seat, and the bar by which it is pivoted to the arm, that the said back, when in either of its extreme positions, will be firmly locked, and prevented from moving laterally at either top or bottom; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view of a car-seat with my improvement, and Fig. 2 an enlarged view of part of the back and pivoted bars.
The end frame of the seat comprises the legs A, seat-frame B, and arm (3; and to the latter, at the center, is pivoted one end of a bar, D, the opposite end of which is enlarged, and is provided with two slots, E E, each composed of recesses a a at the ends, and a connecting segmental portion, b, as shown in Fig. 2. To these slots are adapted pins d and d, projecting from the end of the back F of the seat the pins being of such a diameter that they fit snugly in the slots. The bar D, when in one of its extreme positions, rests upon a lug, e, secured to the arm 0, and when in the other position upon a similar lug, 0, these lugs being so placed that the hack F is supported entirely free from the seat.
Lateral or tilting movement of the seat, when in either of its extreme positions, is prevented, owing to the fact that when in these positions the pins d and d rest in the recesses a at one end of the slots E E, and are firmly held thereby.
I claim as my invention The combination, in a car-seat, of the arm 0 and its pivoted bar D, having slots E E, of the form described, with the back F, having pins 0?} d, adapted to the slots in the bar D, m set forth.
THOMAS RHOADS JOHNSON.
