ROBERT F. GOLDEN, 0] SOUTH NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL Locx wasnna comm, or NEWARK,
'masar NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW spur Application filed J'uly i1, 192 s. Serial no. mass.
This invention relates to a novel and im: proved form of sput, and will 'be best under- .stood from the following description and the drawings, in which I have accompanyin shown selecte embodiments of my invention, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a sput and a portion of the sheet to which it isconnected.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the sput shown in Fig 1, detached from thesheet. ig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1, but showlng another form in which my invention may be embodied. I
Fig. 4 is a" plan view of the device shown in Fig. 3. v
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, these views show a sput 1 having a hole 2 therein for the reception of a plug, which. ma be screwthreaded to engage corresponding threads in. the hole. The sput is adapted to be connected to a sheet 3, which is preferably provided with anoopening having its edge portion bent or folded back away from the opening, with the outer layer 4 spaced from the inner 'layer 5, so as to leave a space 6 therebetween. This folded-back portion is preferably raised above the plane .of the sheet, as
shown.
The outer surface of the split preferably has an upper conical portion 7 contacting with the inner surface of the inner layer of the folded-back edge portion, and in this outer surface, referably along the edge of'the sput beneat the conical portion, are a plurality of recesses 8 into-which the edge portion of the sheet is forced. The'sput above the conical portion may be provided with a shoulder 9.
' connected together in the same manner as in Figs. 1 and 2, except that a ring 10 of sheet In Figs. 3 and 4, the sput and sheet are 1 material is placed between the sput andthe adjacent layer of the sheet. This ring may be used as a gasket, and it also forms means for sealing the plug 11 to the sput. The head of the plug'bears on the portion of the ring which is bent horizontally away from the sput hole, as indicated at12, and at one place this portionl2 may be extended to form an the layers of the fol and the inner layer bearing on sa1d bearing ear 13 having a hole therein registering with a hole in an ear 14 on the plug. A wire 15 or other sealingmeans may be passed through these holes. The above-arrangement provides means to seal the plug to the ring and consequently to the sput.
In both embodiments shown the sput is away from the opening, and in sput for said. opening having a hole'for the reception of a plug and an outer surface bearing on said bent-back edge ortion, said outer surface having recesses tlierein into which said edge portion of the sheet is depressed.
2. In combination, a sput having a hole for the reception of a plug and an outer bearing surface, a sheet having an opening to receive the sput, the edge portion of the sheet adjacent the opening being folded back with the layers of the fold spaced from each other and the inner layer bearing on said bearing surface on the sput, and means securing the sheet and sput together and preventing relative movement therebetween.
3. 'In combination, a sput having a hole for the reception of'a plug and an uter bearing surface with recesses therein, nd a sheet having an opening to receive the sput, the edge portion of the sheet adjacent the opening being bent back and bearing on said sur face and forced'into said recesses.
4. A sput having a hole for the reception of a plug and having the'outer surface formed with an upper conical portion to bear on the sheet of a drum, the edge of the sput beneath said portion having recesses within which said sheet may be forced.
5. In combination, a sput having a hole for the reception of a plug and an outer bear--- ing surface, a sheet having an opening to receive the sput, the edge portion of the sheet being folded back with adjacent the o enin p g spaced from each other surface on the sput and the outer layer forming a seat for the head of the plug, and means securing the sheet and sput together and preventing relative movement therebetween.
6. In combination, a sput having a hole for the reception of a plug, a sheet having a surface lying' adjacent a surface of the sput, a ring disposed between said surfaces and havinga part thereof forming a bearing for the head of 'a plug in said hole, and means-securing the parts to ether.
