An arrangement substantiallysimilar to that set forth is associated with the ends of the roller 27 so as to mountthis roller in position and this arrangement obviously facilitates the rem-oval of said roller 27.
The mechanism as thus far described isassembled'in the following manner. The first portion of the mechanism to be installed will be the insertion of the arms 22 and 23 into the container 18. After these arms and the rollers carried thereby have been-inserted 1n said container the roller 27 is arranged in position with the belt 29 extending therearound. The clutch structure 48 is keyed to the shaft 44 so as to be rotatable therewithbut' slid able axially thereof. This clutch structure 48 includes clutch faces 49 and 50. On the face of the clutch face 49 disposed toward the worm wheel 46 a clutching substance 51. such as cork or brake lining material is arranged and a similar material 52 is arranged on the adjacent face of the wormwheel-46 and this section of material engages the section 51 when the clutch face 49-is moved toward and into engagement with the adjacent face of the worm wheel 46. A similar arrangement is provided on the adjacent faces of the clutch 50 and the worm wheel 45. The clutchmember 48 includes a collar structure 53 which has a groove 54 provided therein. Disposed in the groove 54 is the lower end portion of a shifting member 55 and this lower end portion 56 is substantially U- shaped as illustrated in Fig. 0. The shifting member 55 is fixed to a shaft 57 that is journaled in opposite walls of the housing defining the compartment and this is clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. By manipulating the shifting member 55 the clutch structure 48 may be moved so as to bring about engagement of either the clutch face 56 with the worm wheel or the clutch face 49 with the worm wheel 46.
On the ends of the shaft 44 extending beyond the walls 13 and 14 are pulleys 58 and 59. A belt 60 (Fig. 3) extends around the pulley 58 and the pulley 61 mounted on the supporting mechanism on the adjacent end of the roller 27 and the pulley 62 mounted on the stud 37. The belt 60 is of the so called endless type. The clutch arrangement on the shaft 44 is such that it will rotate said shaft in opposite directions and, therefore, when the clutch face and the worm wheel 45 are engaged the shaft 44 will be rotated in one direction and movement will be imparted through the belt to operate the roller 27 and the brush 31 in the manner set forth. Also when the clutch fa ee- 49 and the worm wheel 46 are engaged the shaft will be rotated in the direction opposite to that set forth and movement will, in this instance, be transmitted through the belt 60 to the roller 27 and brush 31 to rotate these members in the opposite direction. A belt 63 substantially similar to the belt 60 and connected in a similar manner is arranged at the opposite end of the device and co-operates with the pulley 59 on the shaft 44. In order to operate the shaft 44 and the worm wheels 45 and 46 I provide the following mechanisms.
Shafts 64, and 65 are journaled in the walls defining the compartment 15 and extend parallel to the shaft 57. Worm gears 66 and 67 are mounted 011 these shafts and the leads of these worm gears extend in opposite directions. The worm wheel 45 which meshes with the worm gear 66 is arranged so as to have the lead'thereof corresponding to the lead of the worm gear 66 and the worm wheel 46 is correspondingly related to the worm gear 67. The shaft- 64 is extended out through the outwardly disposed wall of the compartment 15 and a flexible shaft 68 of approved form is connected to this portion of the shaft 64. The flexible shaft 68 is also connected to the shaft 69 of a motor 70. A suitable supporting strap 71 is connected to the motor and this supporting strap isarranged about the body of the operator of the mechanism in order that the motor will be supported adjacent the machine. -On the shaft 64 a pulley 72 is arranged and aligned with the pulley 72 is a pulley 73 on the shaft 65 and a belt 74 extends between these pulleys and in this manner movement imparted to the shaft 64 is transmitted to the shaft 65.
As is best illustrated in Fig. 1 the portions of the housing 10 co-operating to define the compartment 15 extend outwardly with respect to the portions defining the compartment 16. A handle 75 extends upwardly from this outwardly extending portion defining the compartment 15 and abracket 76 extends between the upper end of the handle 75 and the wall 19. This handle 75 is arranged substantially midway between the walls 13 and 14 and it is, h'erefore. apparent that the device may be expeditiously manipulated when this handle 75 is properly gripped. The clutch operating member 55 extends upwardly in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3 and the upper end thereof is ex -tended through a slot 1n the bracket 76. In
the bracket 76 three depressions 77 are formed and a lug 78 on the upper end portion 79 of the operating member 55 is selectively fitted into these recesses. lVhen the lug 78 is disposed in the intermediate of the recesses 77 the roller 53 is arranged in an intermediate position. When the lug 78 is disposed in the recess 77 positioned toward the right as viewed in Fig. 6 the clutch face 49 will be engaged with the worm wheel 46 and when the lug 78 is disposed in the left of the recesses 77 the clutch face 50 will be engaged with the worm wheel 45.
