PENITSYLYHLNIA, A CC EZPOPn-"L'JIGN OF NEW JERSEY STAKE R-EIIEASING POCKET Application filer January 10, 1930.
My invention relates to stake pockets for railway cane cars or other load carrying vehicles of the type having a door forming one side of the pocket and opening outwardly and downwardly to release the contained stake.
take pockets of this type and known to the prior art, when in stake releasing position permit the door to project below the body of the car so as to strike obstructions adjacent to the track as the car is moved and either cause damage to the stake pocket or hinder the free movement of the car.
An object of my invention is to provide a stake pocket which is easily changed to stake holding or stake releasing position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a stake pocket in which there are no loose parts to become detached or lost.
A further object of my invention is to provide a stake pocket in which the door of the pocket when in open position will not strike obstructions about the track as the car is moved.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows in elevation a portion of the side of a car embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a view taken along the lines 22 of Fig. 1; Figs. 1 2 showing the stake pocket in stake holding position; Fig. 3 is a view similar to 1 i 2 showing the pocket with the door ned to stake releasing position.
teferring now to the drawings where like reference characters refer to like parts, reference character 1 indicates the side sill of a car in d reference character 2 indicates a portion the floor of a car which is secured to the si .e ill. At intervals throughout the length 0 the side sill, stake pockets 3 are provided z of which is secured to the side sill and are ach adapted to receive the lower portion of a stake Each of the stake pockets 3 is provided with spaced sides 5, back 6 and bottom 7, all of which are preferably integral and is further provided with a front or door 8 which extends between and is vertically connected with spaced lugs 9 on the bottom 7 through the medium of a pin or bolt 10. Adjacent its upper edge the door 8 is provided with outwardly projecting spaced lugs 11 in which a pin or bolt 12 is mounted. This Serial No. 419,841.
bolt passes through and beyond each of the lugs 11 and on each of the ends of the bolt which projects beyond the adjacent lug 11 one leg of a U-shaped lever 13 is operatively mounted. This lever is provided with spaced cam portions 1 which are preferably integral with the legs of the lever and are adapted to engage by means of the cam surfaces 15 with cam surfaces 16 formed n the extensions or projections 17 of the sides 5 to lock the door 8 and thus form a stake pocket vhich will hold the stake in its proper upright position. Assuming a car is equipped with the invention and loaded with cane and it is desired to unload it, the operator moves the lever 13 in the direction as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 causing the cam portions 14 to be moved free of the projections 1. The outwardly projecting portions 18 of the lugs 11 now engage with the lever 13 and prevent further rotation of the lever. it this time the pressure of the load against the stake will cause the door to drop downwardly to the position as shown in Fig. 3 thus freeing the stake and permitting it to drop outwardly so that the lading is dumped at the side of the track. As the door 8 swings outwardly and downwardly, projecting lugs 19 mounted on the back of the hinge portion of the door engage with the bottom 7 of the stake pocket to prevent the door from rotating into a position beyond that which is necessary to permit ti e free falling movement of the stake 4;. It will be noted that in the embodiment of the invention as shown in Fig. 3 the door 8 comes to rest in a position substantially horizontal with the floor of the car and in this manner both the operating lever and the door are held a sufficient distance above the ground or track to clear any obstruction such as discharged cane or other material which may be lying on the ground adjacent the track. It will be readily apparent from an inspection of Fig. 3 that should it be desirable to have the door come to rest in a position above or below that shown in the drawings, the shape of the lugs 19 may be varied to attain the desired rotation of the door. When it is desired to mount the stake, the operator raises the door 8 until it is in closed position and then manipulates the lever 13 in such a manner that the cam surfaces 15 engage with the cam surfaces 16 on the projection 17 of the pocket thus locking the door in closed position. The operator now lowers the stake into the pocket formed by the sides '5, back 6, bottom 7 and the door '8 which is held I againstoutward'movement'until it is again desired to unload the car. a Y n Claims: I
Having thus describedthe invention what I I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A stake pocket having a door hinged thereto and opening outwardly and downwardly and means on said door engaging with the. stake pocket for preventing the downward movement'of thedoor beyond the stake releasing position. o 2 The combination in'a stake pocket of a rigid stake receiving portion, a' member 7 hinged adjacent the baseofsaid portion and v forming one side thereof, and a stop mounted on said hinged'member for engaging with sa1d"r1g1d portlon after a predetermmed opening movementofthe hinged member.
. 3. In a stake pocket the combination of a v rigid member forming a stake receiving portion, a door forming a wall of said pocket and hinged adjacent thebaseof said rigid member, means mounted on said door engaging wlth said rlgid portion for maintaining the door in closed position and meansmounted V on sald door engaging with sa1d rigid portlon after the door is opened to limit the downward movement of the door to an approximately horizontal position;
4Q The combination in a stake pocket of a stake receiving portion, a door hinged adj acent the base of said portion and forming one wall thereof, a locking member mounted on said door and engaging with said rigid portion'for maintaining the door inclosed position, .a member on said door for operating I the locking member and means. mounted on 7 said door for limiting the unlocking movement of said lock operating member.
5. The combination in a stake pocket'ofa stake receiving portion, a doorhinged adjacent the base of said portion and forming i one wall thereof, a locking member mounted on said door and engaging with said rigid portion formaintaining'the door in closed pos1t1on, a: member on'said door for operating the locking-member and meansmounted on said doorfor limiting the unlocking movementofsa d lock operating member, and a member mounted on said doorand engaging with said stake receiving'portion after the door'is opened, to prevent the door from assuming a vertical pocket.
