In the form shown, the improved stool comprises a standard, on which is rotatably mounted a seat having a back rest. Secured to the seat and standard, is a spring which yieldably holds the seat on the standard and also urges the seat into a predetermined position relative to the standard when the stool is unoccupied.

In the construction illustrated, the standard includes a hollow post 1, on the lower end of which is mounted a base 2, provided with a top wall 3, which is located within the lower ,end of the post. Seated in the upper end of the post 1, is a cylindrical cup 4 having a peripheral flange 5 which is welded or secured in any other suitable manner to a flange 6 on the upper end of the post 1. The bottom of the'cup 4 is provided with a central aperture 7 and a pair of diametrically opposite apertures 8. Mounted in the cup 4, is a'support 9 of cylindrical shape which has an inclined cam surface 10 on its upper'end. On the lower end of the support 9, is a pin 11 1929. Serial No. 371,377.

which is adapted to extend into either of the apertures 8 for retaining the cam surface 10 of the support 9 in one of two oppositely inclined positions.

Rotatably mounted on the post 1, is a seat 12 which includes a back rest 13. Secured to the bottom of the seat 12 is a spider 14, on which is threaded a depending support 15 having an inclined cam surface 16 which engages the cam surface 10 of the support 9.

The support 15 of the seat extends into the cup 4 and rests upon the support 9. Extending through central apertures in the supports 9 and 15, and through the central aperture 7 in the bottom of the cup 4, is a bolt 17 which is secured at its upper end to the spider 14. The lower end of the bolt 17 is provided with an eyelet 18, to which is attached a spring 19. The spring 19 extends axially through thehollow post 1 and through an aperture in the top wall 3 of the base 2. Secured to the lower extremity of the spring, is a pin 20, which bears against the lower face of the top 3.

In operation, when the seat is unoccupied, it is normally held in the position shown in Fig. 3, so as to retain the back rest 13 substantially normal to a lunch counter. When a plurality of lunch room stools of this kind are mounted in front of a lunch counter, the back rests of all the seats are retained in a uniform position relative to the counter so as to present an orderly appearance. A customer may conveniently approach the seat 12 from one side of the stool and rotate the seat in the direction of the lunch counter after he has seated himself.

When the seat is vacated, the spring 19 restores the seat to its normal unoccupied position. The support 9 may be adjusted so as to position the back rest 13 on the left hand side of the post 1 rather than on the right hand side thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, by inserting the pin 11 into the right hand aperture 8 of the cup 4.
