Description
W. BOOS FUR KNIFE oct. 27, 1931.
Filed April 8, 1931 Patented Oct. 27, 1931 PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM BOOS, F MINEOLA, NEW YORK FUR KNIFE Application led April 8,
This invention relates to improvements in cutting implements and has particular reference to a fur cutting knife.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved knife of simple and practical construction wherein a multi-edged cutting blade has a mounting which enables the blade to be interchangeably adjusted thereon, and wherein the blade is so held upon the mounting that at least two of the cutting edges will be exposed for use in any position of adjustment of the blade.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view of one side of the knife Constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a similar view of the other side thereof;
Figure 3 is a view like Figure l, showing the guard of the knife adjusted to a position to enable the cutting blade to be placed upon its mounting, said blade being indicated in dot and dash lines; and
Figure 4 is a plan view of the cutting blade.
As shown, the knife comprises a mounting plate generally indicated by the numeral 5, one end of which is reduced to provide a handle portion 6 while the opposite end is tapered and formed with a cut-out portion 7 for the purpose of exposing one of the cutting edges as the blade 8 which will be presently described in more detail.
Preferably at a point intermediate the ends of the plate 5 and adjacent one edge thereof, as at 9, there is pivoted to said plate, for movement in a plane parallel thereto, a guard member 10 of the same general configuration as said plate. Said guard member is providedat one end with a handle portion 11 adapted to align with the portion 6 when the guard is in its operative position, and the opposite end of the latter is tapered and provided with a retaining ange 12 which combines with the body of 1931. Serial No. 528,510.
the guard to form a slot for receiving portions of the plate 6 and blade 8, as best shown in Figure 2, thereby to retain said blade in operative position. A retaining flange 13 on one edge of the handle portion 6 of the plate is adapted to engage over oneedge of the handle portion 11 of the guard when the latter is aligned with said plate so as to prevent said portions from spreading laterally when the knife is in use.
The blade 8 is preferably of rhombic formation and its periphery is sharpened to provide two pair of cutting edges 14 which enable the blade to be interchangeably mount-ed on the plate so that either pair can be used. In order to secure the blade 8 on the plate, the guard 10 is first swung to the open position shown in Figure 3. The end of the blade having the cutting edges which are not to be used is inserted between the plate 5 and guard 10, the portion of the latter under which the end of the blade is engaged beingsuiiciently flexible for 'his purpose, To properly locate the blade in its operative position, the saine is provided with a slot 15 which receives'the spaced studs 16, thereby permitting the blade to lie flat against the plate 5 and preventing lateral shifting thereof. rlhe guard is now swung about its pivot 9 until the handle portions are aligned, the guard being provided with an entrance slot 17 to receive said pins. As the guard is moved toward said position, the adjacent edges of the blade and plate enter the slot formed by the flange 12 which thereupon acts to secure the blade against displacement. Vhen in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, one edge of the pair 14 to be used is exposed for practically its entire length by the cut-out 7 while the outer end of the other edge of said pair extends beyond the end of the plate and guard, thus making both edges available for use in the cutting of furs.
To facilitate spreading of the plate 5 and guard 10, when it is desired to remove and reverse the position of the blade 8, the handle portions 6 and 11 are provided with small projections 18 which may be engaged by the operator.
