Description

oct. 27, 1931. H, E WHITE 1,829,320
CRUCIBLE FURNACE LINING Filed Jan. 3. 1929 INVENTOR Patented Oct. 27, 19.31 l
PATENT orricr.
UNITED STATES HAROLD E WHITE, 0F BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB T0 LAVA CRUCI'BLE COM- PANYV OF PITTSBURGH, F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA., A CORPORATION 0F PENNSYLVANIA My invention relates to furnace linings, and more 'particularly to furnace linings especiall designed for use in a crucible furnace o `the well known cylindrical type.
In furnaces of the character specified, it hasheretofore been the practiceto line up the furnace with curved iirebrick, for eX- ample, from six to eight curved bricks joined `together edge to edge, with cement joints, to l0 form a circle, and a number of these superimposed circles with cement interposed be# tween the complete circles constitute .the-
' 2' tionship Within the furnace in a minimum length of time and at a minimum cost.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a furnace lining of the character specified, including a plurality of superimposed continuous ring members, with one of the ring members formed with an opening or a plurality of openings extending through the circular body for the purpose ewig-.receiving a burner or the like, and for prviding a slag opening for the lining.
Other advantages will becoine-v apparent from the specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
v'Fig'. l is a vertical sectional view of a cruing; j Fig. 2, a sectional view on the line II-II ofFig. 1; Y
Fig. 3, a sectional view on the line III-#III .45 of Fig. 1, particularly showing the location of the burner and the slag openings; andv Fig. 4, a perspective view of one of the lining units.
Referring to the drawings, the crucible furnace A is of the upright cylindrical type, havcible furnace embodying my improved lin' CBUCIBLE F'UBNACE LINING Application mea January a, 192e. serial no. 330,103.
ing a metal casing 2, an insulating lining 3, A
and a bottom 4 formed of-suitable refractory material.
The lining comprising m invention, as illustrated and as preferre is designated generally by the character B and, as shown, includes a plurality of circular or continuous ring units or members 5 and a member 6. v
Each of the said members is made of suitable highly refractory materials, having extreme temperature-resisting qualities,l and are of such character that they may be readily installed in the shell of the furnace by lowering the respective units from the open top of the furnace. A thin layer of cement is provided between the rings only, thus producing in, effect a one-piece mass lining.
As illustrated, member 6 is provided with a tangentiall'y disposed burner-receiving opening 8i extending through the circular body and with a slag opening 9. It will be understood that these openings may be initially formed in member 6, the same'being disposed in the desired positions and of proper dimensions to cooperate with the desired parts'of the furnace structure.
The bottom 4 is provided with a pedestal 10 to receive the crucible C within the furnace. The furnace is closed by a refractory fp 11 which is provided with a vent opening The inner diameters of the circular units l5 are uniform, forming a cylindrical combustion chamber'of a predetermined size with reference tothe diameter of the crucible C. The-effect of such construction is to provide a smooth and uninterrupted surface for the passage 'of the vgases'of combustion'. This is a decided advantage over the present constructions, which present an uneven surface, due to the great number of small units and joints comprising the lining.
`It will be seen that furnaces may be relined within` a minimum time by employing my lining units, thereby greatly decreasing the present expense caused by such furnaces being shut down.
I claim: A A crucible melting furnace comprising a ,l casing open at the top, a lining for the casmg, said casin having a bottom supporting said'lining an vadapted to `support a crucible said lining comprising superposedv rings o refractory material insertlble through said top, one of said rings and side wall of the casing having a burner o ening and a slag opening therethrogh, an the'rin s having their bores of the same diameter an with the walls thereof iny iush relation, the lining thus avoiding laterally-separable sections v and affording ay substantially smooth and uninterrupted surface for the passageof the gases of combustion thereover.
In testimony whereof I ax my si nature.
HAROLD E. ITE.
