I latented @ct. 27, 1931 PATENT OFFICE JE'IHRO THOMAS WADE, OF HIGH WYCOMBE, ENG-LAND TURBINE PUMP AND THE LIKE Application filed July 28, 1928, Serial No. 295,990, and in Great Britain August 10, 1927.
- This invention relates to turbine pumps and the like and has for its object to provide such devices of an efficient character especially, but not exclusively, for high pressure work in which the power required for driving does not exceed that for which the turbine pump or the like is designed, whatever i the variation in the head of delivery, which thus protects the prime mover from damage by variations in loading.
. The type of turbine pump to which the invention particularly relates comprises a stator and rotor, the stator being provided with a number of vanes, the space between each of which forms an outlet passage, the stator vanes surrounding or being arranged adjacent the rotor, the rotor itself constituting an impeller.
It has previously been proposed to provide 53% a steam turbine wherein a series of alternated rotor and stator elements are arranged adjacent each other, the stator elements consisting of rings of stationary vanes having a. double convex section, and the adjacent 25 rotor elements being provided with curved vanes or buckets. the arrangement being such that the motive fluid after its entrance to the turbine travels from the vanes in one stator element to the buckets in the next adjacent 39 rotor element, and from the latter to the suc seeding stator element until finally the fluid is led away from the turbine.
According to the present invention a turbine pump or the like of the type above set forth comprises a stator having a number of outlet passages which are formed between vanes that have a double convex section so that the edges of the vanes are substantially knife edged, and a rotor or impeller the blades of which are of double convex form and arranged substantially radial.
In order that the invention may be better understood, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which shew two constructional forms of turbine pumps constructed according to the invention, and in which Fig. 1 is a part sectional elevation of one so form of pump.
Fig. 2 is a part sectional elevation of a multistage pump of the closed ty e.
Referring to Fig. 1, the pump t erein illustrated comprises a body 3 formed from two castings which on the drawings are partly cut away to shew the fixed ring or housing 4 constituted by two side members 5 connected by blades or vanes 6 of the form shown. As will be seen, these are arranged to leave reotilinear passages 7 between them.
The im )eller is formed with a desired number of ra ially arranged vanes 8 with curved outer faces 9, and the general arrangement of the parts is such that the passages 7 and blades 6 are substantially tangential to the periphery of the impeller. 10 is the driving shaft.
The pump shewn in Fig. 2 is suitable for bore hole duty, but can also be constructed with feet for horizontal duty or double ended suction with delivery in the center with varying stages either side. In Fig. 2 11 is the impeller carrying blades 12 simi ar in cross section to the blades 8 shewn in Fig. 1. 13 is a drum attached to the shaft and carrying three rings of moving vanes 14. These movin vanes as shown in the drawings and in the diagrammatic representation of the vanes in Fig. 2, are arranged radially and in cross section have the same double curved shape as the blades or vanes 8. Each rin of moving vanes 14 works between rings of fixed guide vanes 15 arranged radially but inclined to overlap in a manner similar to the vanes 6, Fig. 1, to form passageways from one series of moving vanes 14 to the next.
16 is the eye of the impeller for the entry of fluid and 17 is the outlet end of the casing, 18 being guide vanes for the outlet between the blades of the last fixed ring 15.
The method of operation of this form of the device will be readily understood. The fluid enters at 16 and is passed by the blades of the impeller 12 to the first fixed ring of blades 15, from thence to the first ring of rotating vanes, and soon until it passes from the outlet 17 It will be observed on reference to Figure 1 that each of the passages for fluid between the blades 8 of the impeller, from the center and presents practically no obstruction to the passage of the fluid.
. Its outermost edge is also knife-edged, leaving the entire periphery of the rotor open or free for the passa e of fluid, and moreover the very real an additional advantage is given that the passages between the double comprisin a casing with an in convex blades are of gradually increasing section, which facilitates the passage of the fluid to the outer edge thereof.
It will be understood that turbine pumps constructed a'ccording to the invention are suitable for water, air and most general purposes and may be used in some cases with water, steam, air or other fluid as a prime mover,-tl1'at is to say a turbine for developing power being suitably modified for the pur ose.
T e invention is not limited to the precise forms or details of construction described, as these may be varied to suit particular cases. Y
What I claim and desire to se'cure by Letters Patent of the United States of America 1s:-
1. A turbine pump of the type set forth for fluid, earings carried by the said casing, a rotor shaft mounted in the said bearings, a rotor mounted on the said shaft, having a plurality of radial blades spaced at equian lar distances apart, each of said blades eing of double convex form and so arranged that the outer edges of the blades are at the periphery of the rotor, the inner edges thereof being spa'ced from the center of rotation, and a stator comprising a plurality of blades of double co'nvex section arranged at desired distances apart and tangential to the periphery of the rotor, so that outlet passages are formed between the stator blades, the blades of the rotor in cross section having an outline bounded by curves of equal radius and knife edges at the extremities of said curves and coincident with the axial radii of said blades and the tangentially arranged blades of the stator also having an outline bounded by 'curves of equal radius and knife edges at the extremities .of said curves.
-2. A turbine pump of the type coin-prising a rotor having blades which may be of double convex section, and a stator having'blades which also may be of double convex section, the rotor blades being radially arranged and the blades of the stator tangentially arranged to the rotor, the blades of the rotor in cross section having an outline bounded by curves et and outlet v of equal radius, and having knife edges at the extremities, the knife edges coming on the radial lines, and the tan ntially arranged blades of the stator having a similar cross section for the pur oses set forth.
- In witness whereof I a m signature. JETHRO THO S WADE.
