IMPROVEMENT IN MORTlSlNG-CHISELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,894, dated,- October 3, 1876; application filed i July 22, 1ste.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it khown that I,EL1 COLE, of Horseheads, in the county of Ohemung and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Mortising-Chisels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my mortising-chisel and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
This invention relates to chisels or chiselbits used in machines for mortising and tenoning and similar work; and it consists in providing each of them with a central longitudinal rib, which has serrations on its sides so as to clean the mortise or other recess of small Achips and particles of wood when said chisel is vertically withdrawn thereform.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the shank of said chisel, whereby it is attached to the operating machine. B is the blade, provided with cutting-edge b and beveled face B'. C is a longitudinal rib, running down the middle of said beveled face, and provided with cutting-edge c at right angles to cutting-edge b. The sides of said rib are provided with serrations c', which are inclined backward, so as to oier no obstacle to the entrance oi' said chisel blade and rib into the wood. But when the chisel is withdrawn in its upward movement, it carries up with it the loose chips and particles which have been separated from the wood in the downward stroke, thereby making a clean cut or cavity.
I do not desire to confine myself to the exact construction described, as the form of chisel might be varied in many ways corresponding to the work to be accomplished without departing from the spirit of my invention. Instead of serratons a roughened lile-like surface might be substituted, or any equivalent device.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A mortising or tenoning chisel, provided with a longitudinal central rib C, having cutting-edge c at right angles to cutting-edge b of the chisel proper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A mortising or tenoning chisel, having the longitudinal central rib (l, provided with side serrations c', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of a chisel-blade,having beveled face B', with central longitudinal rib O, having serrations c', or their equivalents, on its sides, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ELI COLE. Witnesses:
