Patented Oct. 27, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAUL LIEBERKNECHT, OF EINSIEDEL, NEAR CHEMNITZ, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MASCHINEN-FABRIK EINSIEDEL GESEL-LSGHAFT MIT BESCHRANKTER HAFTUNG, OF EINSIEDEL, NEAR CHEMNITZ, GERMANY MEANS FOR PRODUCING FASHIONED GOODS N STRAIGHT BAR KNITTING MACHINES Application filed May 29, 1929. Serial No. 367,088.
This invention relates to a device for producing fashioned goods on knitting frames of the cotton type. Usually the needle bar carrying the knitting needles is controlled by a lever which bears continually against a a cam and maintains the needles out of con tact with the transfer points during the transfer period. It is essential that the needles and transfer points should be carefully positioned relative to each other during the transfer period, since contact between them would result in defective goods, while too great spacing would cause excessive extension of the loops. It is hardly possible to produce a cam which is in all respects exact, and defects in the cam cannot in this case be remedied by providing the cam with an adjustable portion. the transfer period being too long.
The object of the present invention is to provide for an exact relative positioning of the needles during the transfer period, and the invention consists in controlling the cam follower lever during the transfer period by other means than the usual cam. Preferably an additional cam is provided which operates a bell-crank through the medium of which a plunger is applied to the lever so as to control it during the transfer period. This has the advantage that the relative position of the plunger to the bell-crank can easily be regulated.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a cross-section of a knitting frame fitted with the improved controlling device,
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same in section on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
l i g. 3 is a front view of the controlling device, and i Fig. 4 is aside View of the same in section on the line 44 of Fig. 3 on an enlarged scale.
The knitting frame is provided with knitting needles 7': and with transfer points m. The knitting needles are fitted in a bar 9 which is carried by a double-armed, substantially vertical lever 7' whereby the needles is can be moved horizontally towards and away from the transfer points. A rod d connects the lever f with a cam follower lever 22 which rocks about a shaft a and which bears, under the influence of a spring, by means of a roller 0 against the cam. 2' which thus controls the horizontal movements of the knitting needles.
In order to provide for an exact relative positioning of the needles and transfer points during the transfer period independently of the cam i, an additional cam n is, according to the invention, mounted on the cam-shaft h. The additional cam controls, by means of a roller 0, a bell-crank g which is mounted on a rock shaft held in bearing brackets 12. Another rock shaft 8 carries an arm t which bears against an adjusting screw 1' on the bell-crank g. Pivoted to another arm u on the shaft 8 is a plunger w which is arranged to slide in a guide 4; behind an extension of the lever 12 so that it can be applied to the latter. All the levers are controlled by springs.
During the transfer period, the plunger w is applied by means of the cam n to the lever 12 so as to control it and determine the position of the needles is relative to the transfer points m,--an exact regulation of the position being eflected by means of the screw 1'. Between the transfer periods the lever is controlled by the cam 23 and the roller 0 in the usual manner, and the adjustments made by means of the screw 7 for positioning the needles relative to the transfer points during the transfer period will not, therefore, affect the movements of the needles as determined by the cam 2' during the loop-forming period.
The ordinary cam '13 is cut away at a as shown in Fig. 4, so as not to come into contact with the roller 0 during the transfer period.
I claim:
In a straight-bar knitting machine, the combination with knittin needles and transfer points, with a cam fol ower'lever controlling said'knitting needles, and with 'a cam normally controlling said lever, of a lunger adapted taco-operate with the cam ollower lover, a bell-crank controlling said plunger,
an additional cam adapted to act on said bell-crank during the transfer period so as to apply the plunger to the lever and determine the position of the knitting needles relative to the transfer points during such period, and means for regulating the position of the plunger relative to the bell-crank.
PAUL LIEBERKNECHT.
