This invention-relates to an improvement in Hanging-tools for forming flanges upon the ends oftubesor pipes civ-malleable metal,
such as copper, lead, 'etc. Y
y The main `obj ect ofthis invention is to Vvide a simple and convenient tool of the type referredto characterized `by its capacityV forl beingreadily converted to flange tubesor pipes of ,various diameters, ,wherebya flanging'outiit'may beprovidedlat allow cost Jfor manufacture and' weightioranging tubes or pipes of various diameters. g iththeraboveand other objects in view as Twill appear from the ufollowing, my invention l'consists in `a;tube-,Hanging ,toolV having certa-in details of construction and combinations of parts as will behereinafter described andparticularly recited'in the claims. f
In the accompanying'drawin s: Fig.` lisan?` endzview oa anglng-tool constructedin accordance with my `invention Fig. 2 isa view thereof in side elevation; `Figis ai similar/view'but with the stopsleeve in longitudinal section; l f Figi-4 'isa `view corresponding toV Sbut showing a tube-l sleeved overy r the `pilot v and iiangedI by .engagement -with theV deflectmgsurface; :1 f v. 1- A Y ]`i'g.-5 is `a-,detac'hed view in side elevation of th`e=inandrel-member; and: 1 Figsa, 7,' Sand 9 are corresponding views partly in side elevation and ,partly in longitudinall section` and' illustrating arseriesl of interchangeable stop-sleeves capable of be'- ing organizedgwith the mandrel-member to adaptthe tooltolange tubes of' various diameters. 3^ i Y "j A "In carrying out myiiiventiomlemploy a y andrebmember 10 consistingof a pilot-l1', deflectingsurface 12,an externally;
a conical threadedbodyfportion V13, an` annular sleeve'- seatharige14h and' a head '15.,
The `pil'otlllis formed with a tapered outer into, aitube "(F,ig. the. end `-of `which it'gis ,desiredfto provide witli'a flange' 18 for with minimum bulk andi elbows, Ietc., in accordance with common prac- In :Hanging tubes or pipes for the purpose above described, itv is necessary to determine and limit the degree to which the tubes are flared-and for thispurpose Iemploy a series of stop-sleeves 19a, 19h, 19V and 19d (four, v
moreor less, innumber), eachof which is formed with internal threads 20for interf engagement with the externally-threaded bodyfportionlof the mandrel 10` and with an `inwardlyfprojecting annular.v stop-iange 21, the interior surface of which ispreferably adapted to snugly t the detle'cting-surface 12 of` the saidmandrel.|` v The inner end of the stop-fiange 21 of each stop'sleeve termi,- nates inwan annular'stop-shoulder 22 stand,- ,at anangle with respect to the deflectingsurface12. of the `mandrel-member when the sleeve',V inlquestionis applied thereto, and adapted tobe engaged by` the fiange 18 of 1 thetube 17 to limit the outward Hare there-V of, asl clearly shown in v Fig. 4. Y
The stop-sleeves 192191?, 19,c and 19d correspond to each otheriwithjthe exception that their, respective annularstop-shoulders 22 areof different diameters to adapt them to act .tov limitl the iaringof the flanges of tubes of various diameters. ",Forinstance, as` hereinshown, the V stop-,sleeve 19aL is so proportioned that its annular stopfshoulder 22 is of the correct diameter to determinefand limit theflaring action of my improved'toolupon a tube/'of 1%, diameter; similarly, the stopsleeves 19h, 19.5 ',andx19d`kh'ave" their annular stop-'shoulders 22 proportioned to lim-it and determine the-,Aiare of 1/2v, 1% and 1" tubes respectively.'V y 4 A n A .Y In the use-of thevparticular, form. of my linvention hereinchosen for. illustration, the v first step is to apply to the mandrel-member .10 the correct size stop -sleeve for the particu- .lartuberwhich it isintendedto `Harige or ,iareg This may be readily done .by screwing on the desired stop-sleeve, after which the fpilot llfof the mandrel is. axially enteredinto atube such as 17 Hammer-or malletblows upon thehead 15 will serve to Ydrive the-de fleeting-'surface 12into action tof'outwardly .deflect-the and 0f thetub to ii-ma aange-,18.
The driving of the tool into the tube is continued until the edge of the flange 18 thereof iirmly a-buts against the annular stop-shoulder of the particular stop-sleeve 19a Which at the time is organized with the mandrelmember.
While I haveherein shown and described the stop-sleeve 19a as adapted to be organized With -the Im andrel by means `.of screw-threads, it will -beapparent Without further illustration that my invention comprehends other modes of securing the parts together.
I Wish to call attention to the fact that the angle of the defiecting-sunface. 12 'with :respect to the axis of the mandrel may vary Widely Jto meet different requirements, Avand I Wish to have it understood, therefore, that 'my inventionis no't limitedto n'the inelination Aof the said defleeting-surfaee '12 :to produce an obtuse-angled flange upon 'tubes.
It 'Will be seen 'from the'foregoin'g that by so "constructing the mandrel and'a series of l'interchangeable stop-sleeves 4capable oi being organized therewith, Iprovide a Iflangingoutlit ofminimumbulk and Weight Which mayv .be readily and vconveniently converted tol accurately iiange'or flareftheends-of tubes of variousv diameters.
