rllhe principal object of the invention is to include in a one-piece locomotive frame a number of tanks for the accommodation, for example, of water, oil and compressed air, l@ these tanks being so arranged and fabricated as to conform with the essential requirements of electric locomotive frames as to Wheel spacing, the location of motors, brake gear, spring-rigging and other equipment to which paramount consideration must be given, and the ionstituent parts of the tanks being so incorporated in the frame as to produce a structure of minimum Weight in proportion to strength and rigidity.
Une specific object of the invention is to provide in an integral cast frame for an electric locomotive a support for a heating boiler, the support serving also as the top of a Water storage compartment.

For convenience the constituent parts of the frame are hereinafter described with reference initially to the front end of the frame shown at the left hand of Fig. I, and thereafter proceeding along the frame to the right hand of Fig. Il.
With particular reference to Figs. I and VH, it Will be seen that the longitudinal side members 1 converge slightlytoward the end of the frame, terminating in the transverse Wall 2 above an end-frame section 11 Which acts as a draft gear housing. The side members 1 are also integrally connected at this end of the frame by bottom plates 12, top plates 13 formed to accommodate a heating boiler at 14, and the stiiiening member 4, these members 1, 2, 12, 13 and 4 forming an end compartment 50 for Water storage eX- tending Afrom one side of the frame to the other. Suitable openings in the top of the Water storage compartment 50 are provided at l and 16 to give ready access to the compartment and to enable the illing of it with Water and the Withdrawal of water therefrom.
Additional openings 17 at the side members 1 are provided so that sand cores may be supported Within the Water compartment during the casting operation and later removed when the casting has been completed. The openings 17 are subsequently covered with plates and sea-led to render the compartment water tight. At the bottom of the Water compartment and running longitudinally ercof are a pair of parallel stittening mems 18 with openings 19 permitting the passage of Water from one side to the other. At the top of the Water compartment 50 and immediately beneath the heating boiler support 14, there is a longitudinal partition 2O running centrally of the frame, and forming a trough to accommodate chains passing from a hand brake chain shaft at 21 at the front of the boiler to the brake cylinders supported on the pads 22.
Directly beneath the annular support 14 for a heating boiler therelis a cross-tie 3 which serves also as a body bolster and has a center plate 23 adapted to bear" upon the front locomotive truck. As shown in Fig. VIII forward of the cross-tie 3 there is a transverse stiening member 24 which trans- Jfers the Weight of the boiler to the longitudinal side members 1. The combined Weight of side members 1 and heating boiler is transferred to the center plate 23 of the bolster 3 by diagonal stiiening members 25.
Bisposed on either side of the Water com-4 partment at this end of the frame are two cylindrical oil tanks 26. The longitudinal side members 1, which form the sole partition between the oil tanks 26 and the Water compartment 50, have portions 27 of part cylindrie shape constituting a part of the Walls of the oil tanks 26 and of the Water compartment. Dia onal braces 28 and 29 reinforce the longitu inal side members 1 at their portions which comprise the side walls of the Water compartment. The oil tank Walls are formed with cored openings 3() to permit the escape of foundry gases during casting, these openings being subsequently closed y filling With cast steel Welded in place or by Welding plates over the openings. The oil tanks 26 are also cast with their forward ends open, these ends being subsequently closed by reservoir heads 31. At the other end each tank has an opening 32 eccentric to its c lindrical Wall. The openings at the endbs of these tanks permit the support of sand cores therein during the casting operation and the subsequent removal of the sand cores.
Between the cross-tie stifening member 4, which also serves as an end Wall for the Water compartment, and the cross1tie 5 are the sup ports or pads 22 for the accommodation of brake cylinders, and beneath the pads 22 is a Webbed projection 33 comprising a bearing for the fulcrums of driver brake levers.
The intermediate frame section comprises the longitudinal side members 1 and crossties 5, 6 and 7. Throughout this section the side members have portions of substantially box-shaped section as indicated at 34 with a superimposed angle member 35 having a flange 36 turned inward. Flanges 37 formed at the top of the oil cylinders 26 and air cylinders 38, to be later referred to, are in the same plane as the top of the box-shaped portions of the side members 1, and these parts together form a support for outside deck plates running longitudinally of the locomotive.
Cross-ties 5, 6 and 7 of the intermediate frame section, as shown in detail in Figs. X, XI and XII, are provided With pads 39 for engaging motor nose clamps, the pads 39 being disposed to provide a three-point suspension for each electric motor frame. Each cross-tie 5, 6 and 7 is also provided with biurcated brackets 40 for supporting the clog hangers of the driver brakes. Adjacent to the areas in which the motors are suspended the side trames 1 are provided with pedestals 41 for the axle journal boxes of the driving Wheels, the bottom ends of the pedestals 41 being connected by longitudinal members 42 which are cross-connected by means of the cross-ties 5, 6 and 7.
At the rear end of the frame, as shown in Figs. H and IV, the longitudinal side members 1 converge slightly, terminating in the end Wall 10, above an end-frame portion 43 which comprises a draft gear housing similar to the draft gear housing 11 at the front end of the frame. A. second Water storage compartment 51 is formed at this end of the frame bounded by the longitudinal side mem` bers 1, the end wall 10, bottom plates 44, the
teasers combined cross-tie and tank wall 8, and the top member 45.
The box-shaped cross-tie 8, which also acts as an end wall for the water compartment 51, is provided with depending perforated arms 46, .as shown clearly in lFig. lV, adapted to carry fulcrum pins for spring-rigging equalizer beams which -converge towards a cross-head guide which is positioned within the cross-head guide support 47. Diagonal stiening members 48 integrally connect the cross-tie 8 with the support 47 and form a cavity beneath the end of the water compartment through which equalizer beams pass to the equalizer cross-head guide. A number of openings indicated at 49 in the walls of the box-shaped cross-tie 8 permit the passage of water to the wall 52 which forms the end of the water compartment 51.
The cross-tie 9 comprises the equalizer cross-head support 47 and stiiiening plates 55 connectinof the support 47 with the side members 1, there being a large opening 53 and a number of smaller openings 54 permitting the passage of Water from one side of the stiiening plates 55 to the other. A pair of parallel longitudinal stiifening members 56 provided with suitable openings 57 connect internally of the water compartment 51 the cross-head guide support 47 with the end wall 10. A number of openings 58, 59, 6() and 61 ot various sizes and shapes in the top member of the water compartment 51 give ready access to the compartment and provide means for filling the compartment and Jfor withdrawing Water therefrom. Additional openings 62 serve the saine purpose as the corresponding openings 17 at the other end of the frame.
Compressed air tanks 38 are disposed at the sides of the water compartment 51 in a manner similar to that in which the oil tanks 26 are incorporated in the frame at the other end, and it will be apparent that many other structural features of the rear end of the frame correspond to those already described with respect tothe front end.
rlhe ent-ire structure illustrated in the drawings with the exceptions of the heads 31 and 63 for the cylindrical air and oil tanks comprises a one-piece integral casting so designed that tlie operation of assembling the complete locomotive equipment upon the frame is greatly simplified and the number ot fastening means, such as bolts, rivets and the like normally required for assembling, is considerably reduced.
The frame possesses many structural advantages both with respect to the distribu tion of stresses and strains and with respect to strength and rigidity in proportion to the amount ot' metal used. Numerous joints and supports for equipment, normally made as separate parts and requiring drilling of the frame and the use o fastening bolts, have been incorporated in the casting with obvious attendant advantages.
While one specific embodiment of the invention has been described in some detail, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications and changes may be made in the form of the frame as described without departing from the spirit of the claims hereto appended. lt will also be apparent that certain features ot the invention may be used to advantage without a corresponding use of other features.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
1. A locomotive frame casting including, in an integral piece, main longitudinal side members, bottom plates and transverse members connecting said side members and forming therewith an end com artment for liquid storage, occupying the tull space between said side members at the ends thereof.
2. A locomotive frame casting including, in an integral piece, a draft gear housing, a superimposed main frame section compris ing main longitudinal side members, and bottom plates and transverse members connecting sa-id side members and forming therewith an end compartment for liquid storage.
3. A locomotive frame casting including, in an integral piece, longitudinal side members, cross-ties forming with said side members areas adapted to accommodate electric motors, and transverse members and bottom plates forming with said side members end compartments for liquid storage.
4. A locomotive frame casting including,
in an integral piece, longitudinal side members, cross-ties forming with said side members areas adapted to accommodate electric motors, a transverse body bolster adapted to bear upon a locomotive truck, and additional transverse members connecting said side members and forming therewith a liquid storage compartment above said locomotive truck.
5. A locomotive frame casting including, in an integral piece, longitudinal side members, cross-ties forming with said side members areas adapted to accommodate electric motors, a transverse body bolster adapted to bear upon a locomotive truck, and additional transverse members connecting said side members and forming therewith a liquid storage compartment above said locomotive truck, said transverse body bolster having openings therein permitting the passage ot liquid from one side to the other.
6. A locomotive frame casting including, in an integral piece, longitudinal side members, bottom and transverse members forming therewith a compartment for liquid storage, and cylindrical tanks outside said longitudinal side members.
7. A locomotive frame casting including,
in an integral piece, longitudinal side mem bers, bottom and transverse members forming therewith a compartment for liquid storage. and cylindrical tanks outside said longitudinal side members, said side members forming the sole partition between said storage compartment and said cylindrical tanks.
8. A locomotive frame casting including, in an integral piece, a longitudinal side member, and a cylindrical tank supported wholly upon said side member, said side member having a part cylindric area forming a portion ot' the wall of said tank.
9. A locomotive Jframe casting, including, in an integral piece, main longitudinal side members, members connecting said side members and forming therebetween a compartment for liquid storage, a cylindrical tank disposed outside of one of said side members, said side member having a part cylindric area forming a portion of the wall of said tank and forming the sole partition between said storage compartment and said cylindrical tank.
10. A locomotive trame casting including, in an integral piece, longitudinal s ide members, and members connecting said side members and forming therebetween a compartment for liquid storage, the member forming the top oi said compartment comprising a support for a heating boiler.
11. A locomotive frame casting including, in an integral piece, longitudinal side members, members connecting said side members and "forming therebetween a compartment tor liquid storage, and tanks disposed outside said longitudinal side members, the member forming the top ot said liquid storage compartment comprising a support for a heating boiler adapted to be accommodated between said outside tanks.

A locomotive trame casting including, in an integral piece, a water storage compartment, tanks disposed at the sides of said compartment, portions of the side walls of said compartment comprising portions of the walls of said tanks, and the top of said compartment comprising a support for a heating boiler.
13. A locomotive trame casting including, in an integral piece, a liquid storage compartinent, and a partition forming a trough in the top of said compartment separated from said liquid storage space, said trough being adapted to accommodate hand brake chains.
14. A locomotive trame casting including, in an integral piece, longitudinal side mem; bers, members connecting said longitudinal side members and forming therebetween a liquid storage compartment, brake cylinder pads adjacent said storage compartment, and a partition forming a trough in said storage compartment separated from the liquid storage space, said trough being adapted to accommodate brake gear leading to said brake cylinders.
15. A locomotive frame casting including, in an integral piece, longitudinal side members, members connectingr said side members and forming therebetween a liquid storage compartment, the member forming the top of said compartment comprising also a support for a heating boiler, brake cylinder pads adjacent said storage compartment, and a partition forming a trough in said storage compartment separated from the liquid storage space, said trough being adapted to accommodate brake gear leading from the front of the heating boiler to the brake cylinders.

A locomotive trame casting including, in an integral piece, longitudinal side members, and members connecting said side members and torminggtherewith walls of a compartment for liquid storage, said walls having openings therein whereby sand cores may be supported in said compartment and removed therefrom.

A locomotive trame casting including, in an integral piece, a water storage compartment, a cylindrical tank disposed adjacent said compartment with part of the wall of said tank lorn'iing part of the Wall of said compartn'ient, said tank and compartment having means permitting the support of sand cores therein and the removal of the sand cores after the casting is completed.

A locomotive frame casting including in an integral piece, a longitudinal side member, and a cylindrical tank disposed along said side member, said tank having means at the ends thereof permitting the support of sand cores therein and the removal of the sand cores after the casting is completed.

A locomotive frame casting, including in an integral piece, main longitudinal side members, a member connecting said side members and comprising a support for a heating boiler, a transverse stillening member for tra nsterring the weight of the boiler to the side members, and a bolster connecting said side trames beneath said heating boiler and adapted to bear upon a truck.

A locomotive frame casting, including in an integral piece, main longitudinal side members, members connecting said side members and forming therewith a compartment for liquid storage, and a transverse stiifening member within said compartment. including an equalizer cross-head guide support and openings permitting the passage of a liquid from one side of said stiiening member to the other.

A locomotive frame casting, including in an integral piece. longitudinal side members. cross-ties connecting said side members and forming therewith areas in which electric motors are adapted to be supported, transverse members connecting said side frames and forming end compartments for liquid storage, a truck center plate beneath one of said compartments, and equalizer supports beneath the other of said compartments.
