The device is operated in the following manner: The operator stands at the front indicated by A in Fig. 1 face toward the machine, and grasps a lever 17 in each hand. He pulls and pushes alternately upon these, which by means of the ratchet, causesv the propellers 22 to revolve in the direction indicated by the arrow, and the machine to advance toward the operator who walks backward to keep ahead of it. The shape of the arms on the propellers is such they pull themselves into the ground when the forward movement of the propeller is resisted.
In Figs. 5 to 10, inclusive,.is,. shown a modified design of spader. Propellers 30 are secured to a shaft 31 having a ratchet.
wheel 32 secured to it within a body 33 made in two parts 33- a and 33-Z Each half of the body has an operating arm 34; extending upwardly from it, and a breaking arm 35 extending rearwardly. These arms do not penetrate the soil as in the preferred form but serve to break any clods of earth that stick to the arms of the propeller.
Attached to shaft 31 and extending to the rear of the spader is a frame 37, shown dotted with several cultivators attached. This serves to further break up the soil and also as a drag or anchorage to make the propellers bite into the ground. The spader is operated in the same manner as the preferred form, the operator standing at B,Fig. 5, facing the levers 34, which are worked back and forth as before. ,7
It will be noted that the propeller arms in addition to acting as an impeller, dig into the ground entering in a downward direction, then forcing the point gradually toward the rear. Finally the point starts upward breaking and turning up the earth. In the preferred form shown in Figs. 1 to f the ground working arms in addition to acting as an anchorage, chop the turned up earth.
What I claim is:
1. A tillage device comprising a frame, a .pair of propellers journalled on said frame and having involute shaped arms with spade ing surfaces, a pair of operating levers oscillatable on said frame, and one way clutch means connecting each lever to said propellers whereby the levers may be oscillated to and from each other to cause said propellers to be rotated. i V r V 2. A tillage device comprising a frame, a pair of propellers journalled on said frame and having involute shaped arms with spading surfaces, a pair of operating levers oscillatable on said frame, one way clutch means connecting each lever to said propellers whereby the levers may be oscillated to and from each other to cause said propellers to be rotated and anchorage means disposed to follow said propellers penetrating the ground and create a drag on said device.

A tillage device comprising a frame, a pair of propellers journalled on said frame and having involute shaped arms with spading surfaces, a pair of operatinglevers oscillatable on said frame, one way clutch means connecting each lever to said propellers whereby the levers maybe oscillated to and from each other to cause said propellers to be rotated, a ground working toolhaving arms to dig into the ground and provide an anchorage dragging against said propellers, the ground working toolarms being connected to said levers to be caused to be moved alternately toward the propeller arms in their ground engaging position whereby to exert a pincer action. p i i 7.
