v .Referring to the drawingsin which I havey illustrated my invention by shoyv'ingfav pre- Y o ferred` embodiment thereof, the reference -numeral 10V indicates', in general, a "hollow latch vPacman Oct. 13,"1931 LATCH This invention relatesto a latch, andjmore especially to a latchV provided Ywith a readily removable latch bolt and retracting mechanism.V A It is, in general, an object of the invention to bring about a simpliliedrform oflatch havvlr v ing butfew. parts, and whereintheparts' may be readily assembled and disassembled without thense of tools.v yj Y Another obj ect of kthe invention is to bring about an arrangementv o-'a latch and latch Y sists in the novelfeatures and, combination of partsto beV hereinafter describedfand claimed.V y o ,Y fFig. 1f is a planl view k"of a according to my invention;`

while reference numeral' 33' indicates a strike"A provided withk a latch bolt-receiving opening n o The operation-of the latch will b e1,e`a 1dilyv understood ffornthe above description but may bebrieiiydescribed as follows rigs. zend eishow jthelatchwiuithe' bolt k13 fully lp`r ,)tra c ted,and the hand'le28resting against the; upper edge 27 of wall 17 the bolt beingvfo'rced into protracted position againstl'the lowerend of arm`19y by means Of'SP'Ilig 1.6- .l UPOD raising 'h'fmdl 28y .into the' position shown in dottedllinesjy inv Fig. 3, the. retracting v, lever 18 is swung about'pivot lug 23, thelower end of, armf`l'9`engagingbolt 13` 'and .forcingt the 'latten rearwardly yinto the position shown ingd'otted liners. f It is to fbe'lnote'd that iniathis position, thev shoulder 25 x is stillfengaiged under `shoulder 26 so that itlis impossible to detach the-retracting lever f ,rom-'thelatchcase Thus, thelatch bolt may be retracted and protractedl without anydan ger of the.operative vparts being. detached from the case. v f
5 al i drical pivotlug 23, which-1s received within In order to detach the latch bolt, spring and retract-ing` lever from the case, the operation is as follows: The latch bolt is retracted by pressing on the nose 35 of latch bolt head 12 by means of a suitable instrument and forcing the latch bolt further into case 10 than the normal retracted position. When the bolt is retracted in this manner tothe limit of the compressibilty oi spring 16. or at least to such a position that the shoulder 26 on bolt 13 clears shoulder 25 on lever 18, Aand the lug 23 clears the edges of opening 24 (Fig. 5), the lever may be withdrawn upwardly :trom the case 10 and separated theretronrr where upon the latch bolt 13 and spring'l may be withdrawn outwardly through opening 11. It is to be noted that the arm 19 of lever 18 is provided with a relatively flat tace 36 which when thelever 18 is rotated into fully retracted position is spaced from vthe upper end 27 of wall 17. The clearanceV between tace 36 and wall 1.'.7 permits the lever to be moved rearwardlv from pivot lug 27, a con: siderable distance but the lever cannot withdrawn from the case on account ot' the tact that shoulder 25 is still received under shoulder 26. Howevern when thebolt 13 is full retracted by a .suitable tool applied to nose the clearance between tace 36 and wall 17 becomes still .cre/aten and thus when shoulder 25 is clear oli shoulder 26 the lever may be moved rearwardly from disengagement with pivot lua Q3 and uwardlvtrom bolt 13 tobe separated from the latch case.
From the'above description ol the nature. of mv invention and the preferred embodiment thereoiE illust-rated. ,it will be readilv understood that the usual fastening means are enti relv eliminate-Tl. and while tbe several. parts ot the latch may be readily disassembled when desired there isno danger ot these parts becoming disarrane'ed during the normal op'- eration of the latch.
VVbile T have shown a nreterred embodiment ot mv invention. it is to he understood that the is not to be limitedto all tbe details shown but is capable oli modilication and variation within the spirit ot Jrheinvention and the scope of the appended claims.
