DEfiCB FOR USE IN FORIING bNDERCUT SEdTIONS OF ROLLED IETAL I Filed June 4, 1927 2 sums-sheet 2 3 mat/QM Jfizforriqys Patented Oct. 13, 1931 PATENTAOFFICE HERMTANN OIBERSGHUIiTE, ESSEN-ON-THE-RUHR GERMANY DEVICE FOR USE IN FORMING UNDERCUT SECTIONS OF ROLLED Application filed June 4, 1927, Serial No. 196,601, and in Germany June ,9, 1926.
This invention relatesto mills for bending and shaping metal bars or sections and aims to provide an improved device for forming undercut sections of rolled metal.
It isvery difficult-to form or properly shape undercut sections of metal by rolling or bending the same in the rolling mill, and as a rule, very uneven results are obtained. Conseuently, the practice of performing the res aping operation outside the rollin mill by means of guides has been adopte but in many cases, the guides are ineflicienton account of the heavy frictions imposed thereon.
Distinguished from known arrangements,
reshaping device located exteriorly of the rolling mill and consisting of separate rolls acting upon the metal, said rolls being plain or profiled.
In the accompanying drawings, two embodiments of the invention are illustrated diagrammatically by way of example and further descriptlon of the invention will be made with reference to said drawings wherein: 7
Figs. 1 and 2 are res ectively an elevation and a plan view of one orm of the reshaping device; and 7 Figs, 3 and 4 are similar views of another form of the device.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, the illustrated device is representedas acting on the ridges a, a of an initially formed or rolledbar or section p so as to bend them to new positions forming a groove in the bar. Said bar is advanced to the rolls 1", 1' by which its said ridges are first forced from the ositions a, a to thepositions a, a and as the bar is moved forward, its ridges are next engaged by rolls r 1*, which force the same from the intermediate positions a a to the final positions a, a.
To facilitate the initial gripping of the bar by the rolls, the block or carriage k in which the rolls are mounted is made vertically adjustable to permit raising andlowering as indicated by the arrow) so as to bring the rolls in gripping contact with the bar.
- Instead of the embodiment above described, the rolls may be adjustably mounted the present invention provides a bending oridling rollers 03 may advantageously be used in the block is with their axes on inclined and diverging planes oblique to the advancing bar, as viewed in the direction of rolling.
Figs. 3 and 4 represent such an arrangement of rolls 1', r whereby the ridges of the bar are gradually and uninterruptedly' pressed over from the positions a, a tothe I .nal positions a a The number and shape (or profile) of the rolls may be varied in accordance with the purpose in view. A plurality of rolls may be arranged in successive pairs, and instead of plain rolls such as shown, rolls of trunconical or profiled surface may be employed to give shapetothe ridge-portions a of the bar. In order to still further reduce the friction produced by the passageof the bar through the reshaping device, driven or in place of a fixed support below the bending rolls as represented, and such rolls may be profiled or made in any other shape to suit working conditions. 7
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire [0 secure by Letters Patent is v 1. Adevice for forming undercut sections of rolled. metal comprising a block or care riage supported resistably against lifting force and adapted to vertical adjustment, hardened bending rolls mounted in said block or carriage in successive oppositely inclined pairs along a horizontal path of movement of I the bar or section of metal to be rolled so as successively to non-yieldingly apply bends ing force in opposite directions upon portions thereof in a step-wise reshaping or molding operation, the said rolls eing rotatably mounted respectively on axes oblique to said path of movement of the material, and friction-reducing rollers supporting the bar or section of metal moved against the rolls under said block. s I
2. A device for forming undercut sections of rolled metal comprising a block or carriage supported reslstably against lifting force and adapted to vertical adjustment, hardened reshapingrolls mounted in said block or carriage under which a bar or sectionof metal is moved in r. horizontal path with said rolls non-yieldingly applying bend- .7 ing. force upon portions of the latter, the said rolls being rotatably mounted on axes inclined or oblique to said path and arranged 9 in opposing pairs successively closer together with inclination at difierent angles so as to act on the bar in a step-wise reshaping or molding operation during movement along its 7 v path, and friction-reducing rollers supporting -"the bar in movement under said block; said device being located exteriorly of a rollin mill wherein the material is initially forme ,3. A device for forming undercut sections of rolled metal comprisinga block or carriage supported resistively against lifting force. and adapted to vertical adjustment, hardened reshaping rolls mounted in said block in successive oppositely inclined pairs along a horizontal path of movement thereunder of the bar or section of metal to be rolled so as successively to non-yieldingly apply bendin force in opposite directions upon portions 0 the bar in a; step-wise reshaping or molding operation, the said rolls being rotatably mounted on axes inclined or oblique to the travel path of the material within planes at right angles thereto, and friction reducing rollers supporting the bar in move- I ment under said block; said device being located exteriorly df-a rolling millwherein the -material is initially formed.
In testimonv whereof I have afiixed my signature. r MR OBERSC 1:-
