This invention has reference to means for turning sheets of paper or the like in 'machines for folding, ruling or otherwise operating upon such sheets, of the-kind in which the folding, ruling or other devices are are ranged parallel to one another and means are provided betweenpairs of the devices for so that the fold, rulingor other operation given or performed 'by the second device is at an angle to the preceding fold, ruling or other operation. I 1 V The invention has forits object to provide an improved means for effecting the turning of the sheets or the like in machines of the kind referred to. I
A turning means in accordance with the invention comprises a gripper adapted to receive and grip a sheet or the like after same has issued from the first of a pair of folding,
ruling or other devices, and to be then ro- '19 -(F1gs. 2 and which passes through -a .hole, in'. the lower-jaw 12 to form a rotary 'tated' through a right orother suitable angle to turn the sheet and then release the sheet or the like which continuesits travel to the second device whilethe gripper returns to 1 its originalposition.
In the accompanyingdrawings Fig. lis
. a longitudinal section Fig. 2 isa plan and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end view of one form of sheet-turning means in accordance with the invention arrangedbetween two sets j p with one end ofa link 24, the other end of which' is slotted to embrace a shaft 26 and of parallel folding devices.
Referring to the drawings, X and Y indiv cate, respectively two folding devices arranged in suitably spaced parallel arrangement, and comprising as hitherto, rollers' 3 and reciprocatory vertical V ,.with which gears a; rack 30 slldably mounted m, m and 11 bladesw '1 Between the folding-devices X, Y are arranged, ashitherto, endless travelling tapes 1 4 which receivethe folded sheets as they is- I sue from the firstfolding device X, and convey them to the second folding device Y.
1 The tapes 4 are mounted onrollers 5, 6 which are driven by gears 5*, 6 The upper ensure the travel of thesheets .by the tapes there are associated with the latter balls 8- mounted in cages 9 adjustably mounted on bars 10, which are adjustably mounted above s'uring the travelof the sheets by the tapes -is wellknown in folding machines and does not here call for further description.

runs of the tapes pass over a table 7 and to H the table 7,*so that'the balls 8 normally bear on the 'tapesfand hold the sheets in contact ltherewithlso that the sheets move with the tapes. Such an arrangementof balls for en- At a suitable point intermediate of the two folding devices X, Y there is provided arotary gripper comprising normally separated upper and lower horizontally arranged disc jaws 11,12, respectively. The lower jaw 12 is fixed on a tubular spindle 13 mounted ina [bracket 14 secured to the table 7 through which latter the spindle13 passes. The 11 driving connection between the two jaws and to also/position the upper jaw above the 7 lower jaw., j K I .The lower end of the tubular spindle 13. has
mounted on it a disc 20 with 'which engages a bowl 21 on one arm of a bellcrank lever arm of the bell-crank lever 22 is connected carries a bowl 27 adapted to co-operate with i Integral with the disc 20 onthe lower-end of the tubular spindle 13 is aftoothed wheel 29 inlthe; bracket 1 14. The rack 20 is connected which is slotted to. embrace the shaft 26 and carries a bowl 32 adapted to c -Operate with a cam. 33 v on the shaft which is driven from any suitable moving member of the machine.
In'operation, a folded sheet issuing fromi'i95 the first folding: device X is received by the tapes 4 and travelledfhereby until its leading edge enters between the disc jaws 11, 12, as shown in dot-and-dash lines at 34, Fig. 2.
The cam 28 on the shaft 26 by its engagement flOO With the bowl 27 then operates the link 24 to rock the bellgoranlgflever 22 which lifts thelower disc jaw 12 to grip the sheet; At this moment the. link, '31 is operated by "the en gagement of the camse Withtheibovvl32; t0 1 1 -l e slide the rack 30 to'actuate' the vvheel 29 to turnfthe gripper and the/sheet through'909 and. with. itsformer leading edge against the 'fence or register 17, as shown in dot-and-dash. -.j;
