Patented Get. 6, 1931 PATENT OFFICE GEORGE W. ERICSON, F GALESBURG, ILLINOIS TROUGH Application filed August 4, 1927. Serial No. 210,596.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a stock trough, and the invention aims to improve the end plates of the trough and to provide means whereby 5 the end plates may be connected by a top bar.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings 1 Figure 1 shows in side elevatlon, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being in section;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing one 36 of the end plates.
The device forming the subject matter of this application includes a pair of metal end plates 1, and since the end plates are alike, the description will proceed in the singular number.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a metal end plate 1 which is tapered toward its upper end, as shown at 2. The end plate 1 is supplied at its lower end 40 with an inwardly projecting foot 3, somewhat thiclrer than the end plate, the foot 3 extending across the end plate in a continuous length, and projecting beyond the end plate, at each end, as clearly shown in Fig ure l of the drawings. In the ends of the foot 3 there are openings 4, adapted to receive securing elements, not shown, whereby the end plate may be anchored down, should such a proceeding be considered necessary or desirable. The foot 3 is joined to the end section on the line 33 of plate 1 by means of buttresses 5 of triangular form, the buttresses being located near to the side edges of the end plate, as shown in Figures 2 and 4. Ledges 6 project from the end plate 1 and are disposed at an angle 5-5 to each other, the ledges 6 being connected, at their point of meeting, with the foot 3, as shown at 7. The ledges 6 are supplied with openings 8, adapted to receive securing elements 9, such as bolts, to secure upon the co ledges 6, the planks or other members 10 which form the sides of the trough, the ends of the trough being formed by the plates 1.
In each end plate 1 there is an elongated opening 11. A loop-shaped reinforcing flange 12 projects laterally from the plate 1 and is disposed about the opening 11. The flange 12 has lateral ribs 14 that are joined to the end plate 1, the ribs 1e projecting toward the ledges 6, and being disposed about at right angles to the ledges. The loopshaped flange 12 has an intermediate rib 15 that is joined to the plate 1, the rib 15 projecting toward the place 7 where the ledges 6 are connected to the foot 3. The ribs 14 and 15 preferably taper in width toward their lower ends, as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. The side portions of the loop-shaped flange 12 are extended above the top 17 of the flange, to form retaining wings 16. The so top 17 is provided with an opening 18. The parts 16 and 17 form a seat for one end of a top bar 19, securing elements 20, such as bolts, passing through the top bar 19, the securing elements being mounted in the 5 opening 18.
Owing to the specific disposition of the ribs 14, the end plate 1 is reinforced. The loop-shaped flange 12 also reinforces the end plate and forms a place where the ends of the top bar 19 may be secured.
What is claimed is An article of manufacture, for use in the making of a trough, embodying an end plate provided along its lower edge with a rectangular foot extended unbrokenly across the plate, buttresses connecting the end plate with the foot, outstanding ledges projecting from the plate and located at an angle to each other, the ledges being connected to- 1 gether integrally, and to the foot, at a point between the buttresses, the plate being pro vided at its upper end with an outstanding, loop-shaped reinforcing flange extended into the space between the ledges, the upper ends of the flange being extended upwardly beyond the top portion of the plate to form a seat for the handle of a trough.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
GEORGE XV. ERICSON.
