Description

Oct. 6, 1931. o. FOEH'R vCIGAR AND CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed Aug. 28, 1929 rro Has/w? y fs Whey Patented Oct. 6, 1931 UNITED STATES OTTO FOEHR, F KARLSRUHE, GERMANY OIGAR AND CIGARETTE HOLDER Application led August 28, 1929, Serial No. 389,036, and in Germany August 29, 1928.
The invention relates to cigar and cigarette holders of the kind in which the opening for insertion of the cigar or cigarette is of regula-table diameter. Holders of this kind have been made with slits, whereby resilient tongues are formed for gripping the cigar or cigarette, but the edges of these tongues are liable to damage the Wrapper of the cigar or cigarette. According to my inio vention the adjustable portion of the holder consist of a strip or sheet of metal rolled into the shape of a conical tube, not fastened at the seam, with an over lap at the edges, t-he the metal being springy, so that the tube tends to expand or open, and the expansion being limited by a ring which embraces the tube and is adjustable lengthwise thereof, so that the diameter of the tube can be regulated.
A holder according to my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is an elevation thereof,
Fi 2 is a longitudinal section on the line A of Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 a cross-section on the line C--D of Fig. l, to a larger scale.
In the drawings a represents the conical tube referred to, consisting of a sheet of springy metal rolled so that there is a substantial overlap at the edges al, all. The smaller end of this tubeL is pushed into a tubular socket b, which holds it without preventing relative movement of the two edges a1, an. The tube a and socket b are within a conical sheath c, which has longitudinal slots cl extending to its larger end, whereby tongues e are formed. Fixed to the socket b is an externally screw threaded tubular shank f screwed into the mouthpiece g of the holder, a packing ring h being placed on this shank between the socket and the mouthpiece g. The tongues c are embraced by a ring z', slidable thereon, and within this ring there is a ring lo joined thereto by radial members Z passing through the slots d. The ring c is slidable on the tube a, allowing it to expand when it is moved towards the smaller end thereof, and compressing it when it is moved towards the larger end. The tongues e are similarly compressed, or allowed to expand, by the ring z'. The tips n f of the tongues e are bent outwards somewhat, so that the ring i cannot slide off the sheath.
Itewill be understood that the socket may form an integral portion of the mouthpiece, and that the sheath c with tongues e may be, dispensed with; also that in cases where the sheath and tongues are used the inner ring f: may be dispensed with, the expansion of the tube a being limited by the tongues themselves.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a cigar or cigarette holder a conical tube for insertion of the cigar or cigarette at the larger end thereof, consisting of a rolled sheet of springy metal with overlappin edges, not fastened at the seam, and ten ing to expand, and a slidable member embracing said tube, adjustable lengthwise thereof, limiting its expansion.
2. In a cigar or cigarette holder a conical tube for insertion of the cigar or cigarette at the larger end thereof, consisting of a rolled sheet of springy metal with overlapping edges, not fastened at the seam, and tending to expand, a conical sheath embracing said tube, having longitudinal slots extending to its larger end thereof, and a ring embracing the slotted portion of said sheath, adjustable lengthwise thereof, limiting the expansion of the tube within said sheath.
3. In a cigar or cigarette holder a conical tube for insertion of the cigar or cigarette at the larger end thereof, consisting of a rolled sheet of springy metal with overlapping edges, not fastened at the seam, and tending to expand, a conical sheath embracing said tube, having longitudinal slots extending to its larger end thereof, a ring embracing the slotted portion of said sheath, adjustable lengthwise thereof, a second ring, embracing said tube and adjustable lengthwise thereof, limiting its expansion, and members extending through the slots in the sheath, connecting said rings to each other.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification.
