, BAG TURNING MACHINES. No. 182,581; Patented Sept. 26, 1876.
N PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRIPHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIon,
ROSWELL S. J UDSON AND FRANK H. VAN HOUTEN, OF MATTEAWAN, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-TURNING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 182,581, dated September 26, 1876; application fi led August 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RoswELL S. JUDSON and FRANK H. VAN HOUTEN, both of Matteawan, Dutchess county, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Turning Bags, of which the following is a specification:
The object of our invention is to provide an improved machine, which will turn bags, after they are sewed together, with great rapidity, and without manual labor.
At present bags are sewed together on sewing-machines, and, the seams being outside, it is required to turn the stiff and hard bags be fore they areused, a labor very onorous for the sewing machine operators employed in the manufacture of bags.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of our improved ma chine, showing the cylinder in section. Fig. 11 is a plan view of the same.
A is a platform or a floor, to which is fast ened the cylinder B, provided with the removable mouth-piece a, with flanged rim 1) around the opening 0. The bag, after it is manufactured, and requires to be turned inside out, is adjusted to the rim 1) by stretching its mouth over said rim, to which it is firmly held by a string or bag-tie. In front of the mouth-piece a is placed an adjustable table, D, which can be raised or lowered by means of the inclined plane 0 and the wedge f. The bag is placed on this table in order to keep it in the center and in front of the mouth-piece. Into the cylinder B is fitted the air-tight piston G, withthe valve h hinged to the back of the piston. This piston is connected to the crank I, on shaft J with handle m, by means of the connecting'rod N.
It will be readily understood that by removing the air from the cylinder B, by turning the crank I, a partial vacuum in the same is produced, and the bag is thereby forced into the cylinder by the pressure of the outside atmosphere, and the bag is thus turned inside out, as required.
Having thus described desire to claim- In a machine for turning bags, the combination ofthe cylinder B, with removable mouthpiece a, piston G, with valve 72, crank I, shaft J, connecting-rod N, and adjustable table D, substantially as described and set forth.
This specification signed this 31st day of July, 1876.
our invention, we
