Description
UNITED STATE I ISAAC J. GRAY, OF PENTWATER, MICHIGAN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l2,574, dated September 26, 1876; application filed i May 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC J. GRAY, of Pentwater, Oceana county, Michigan, have invented 'a new and Improved Fire and Burglar Proof Well-Safe, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in suspending a safe by a chain on pivots and in a well; also, in looking a safe at the bottom of a well by means of a staple on the safe, and by hook and tumblers secured at the bottom of well. It also consists of a bolting contrivance for locking the safe down in the well to prevent burglars from raising it.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of a wellsafe apparatus according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section taken on Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4. are detail views of the device for looking the safe in the bottom of the well.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a well of strong masonry in the cellar under the safe B, in which is a watertight case, C, of galvanized iron, or other suitable material, surrounded, except at the top and bottom, by water E, into which case the safe is lowered by a chain, F, pulley G, crankshaft El, and counterweight I, or other approved means, and in which it is locked by a staple, J, attached to the bottom of the safe, and a bolt, K, which is operated through the medium of the arm a and rock-lever b by rod Z. m is a sliding bolt, which, in connection with the tumblers L, controls the lockingbolt K. The tumblers are connected to rods 0 P, respectively, extending up through the floors to the room in which the safe is used, to be manipulated conveniently. Q is a trapdoor in the door of the room in which the safe is used, and over which it stands when raised, said door being hinged at R to open and let the safe up and down; and it has a slot for allowing the chain to pass, and the chain has a bulged link, T, to lock the door closed when the safe is down. A double door may be used, if preferred. V is a yoke, in which the safe is suspended by pivots W when it is desired to turn the door of the safe downward in the well, to prevent access to it. The water-casing may be omitted in case it is not necessary to protect the safe against burglars.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to suspend a safe over a vault or Well.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. The safe suspended from the hoisting and lowering chain on pivots, allowing it to revolve, in combination with a well below, substantially as specified.
2. The locking-tumblers L and the hook K, secured in the bottom of the well, in combination with the safe, having a staple to engage with the hook, substantially as specified.
ISAAC J. GRAY.
