This 'invention'relates to improvements in cartons and is directed more particularly to folding cartons or boxes which are adapted to be used as shipping containers,- as well as g for storage purposes and displaying articles.

Among the objects of the invention is the provision of a carton which is constructed and arranged to enclose articles so as to serve as a shipping container, whileat the same time for storage" purposes, portions of the articles contained therein-maybe exposed to view. Another object of the invention is the provision o-fa carton having certain foldable elements which may be moved from receptacle closing positions to other" positions whereby'the carton is opened at .oneend and at the same time it is supportedin tilted position for displaying the contents thereof. As another novelfe'ature thewithdrawa'l of'arloticles through the displaying side of the car ton is more or lessrestricted whilethe withdrawal thereof is facilitated through an open I playedby the carton or box while the unauthorized withdrawal thereof is at least -interfered with if not entirely prevented.

Various and numerous novel features are provided by the invention as will appear from the following description thereof and which features are-illustrated in the accompanying drawings} i It'will be understood that the present disclosure is directed to the form of the invention atpresent preferred and that various changesmay'be made thereinwithout'departing from the spirit andscope thereof. Referring to the drawings, the invention will now be described in detail. I I

A carton is shown in knock-down relation in Fig. 1. Preferablyit comprises, a forward wall 2,'a.rear wall 4 and side walls 6. The edge of the sidewall-6 atthe left in Fig. 1 ispreferably' secured as by gluing to the left side ofthe forward wall'so that as thecarton is setup the' walls will form a tube or receptacle as is common in carton construction.

With this arrangement when articles are inserted downwardly through the open upperside of thecarton the opposite ends of the articles are held by theflange l f against displacement. "That. is, they are held in the carton in the desired manner and yet certain portions of their outerffaces are exposed through the window which is desirable for inspection and other purposes. Where a filled carton is placedin storage'its contents may be readily' determined. I The upper side of the'carton is'closed by meansof the following: Side flaps '18 extend from the upper endsof the side walls 6 and are bendable with respect thereto so that they may be folded inwardly as shown-in Fi n 2. These'have another function as will be Explained presently.

Ag display member 20 is hingedly carried his by the upper end of one wall such as the forward wall 2 and is cut along lines represented by 22 to rovide a support or rim portion 21 which is bendable along lines 24. This member is foldable so as to overlie the flaps 18 as shown in Fig. 2 and carries on its upper edge a. pair of spaced slits 26 for a purpose later to be described.

A cover flap 30 is hingedly connected to a connector 31 which in turn is hinged to the-upper side of the rear wall 4 as at 32. A stra member 33 hinged to the outer edge of t e cover flap 30 has tucks 34 hinged to its opposite ends or side edges.

With this construction the cover flap may be disposed above the elements 18 and 20 and the strap member disposed across the forward sidlroithe carton across the window as shown in- 2,, with the tucks inserted in suitable slots '10 in the side walls. The ends of the tucks may be shaped in various ways and the slots formed to receive them so that the cover flap. strap and tucks may be held seenrol in the position shown in. Fig. 2.

By these flaps and other parts at the upper ends of, the wall the carton is closed at the top to hold the contents and serves as a connenient shipping container. Also as the forward. faces of the articles are partially exposed thepackage is adapted for storage purposes, the contents of the carton being easily ascertained and at the same time the articles are held against ready removal by the flange 14; As one feature, the strap member and tucks serve to strengthen the upper end'of the carton as they embrace it.

when. it is desired to display the contents of the carton for sale, the hinged elements at! the'upper side are utilized as follows:

tucks 34. are removed from their holdihg-slotsand the Closing flap and associated parts are swung rearwardly so that the connector 31 lies against the lower wall of the box while. the cover flap 30 extends downwardly: therefrom. The strap member 33. is folded to overlie the rear side of the cover flap 30 and the tucks 34 are insertedin other slots 40 at or near the intersection or lineofi fold between the side walls and rear wall. The parts assume the position shown in'Fig. 3 so that the tucks 34inconjunction with the cover flap and the connection 31 support the carton in an inclined position smash) adequatelydisplay the contents of the carton through the window.

The display member 20 is supported at the upper end of the carton by folding the rim. portion 21 thereof downwardly and renr'wardly and inserting-the forward edges of the upper flaps 18 in the slits 26 of the rim In this way, as will be seen in Fig. 3', the display member. 20 is disposed in a dcsirablo location above the articles displayed through the window. The display member may oarry decorative or descriptive'matter as may be desired or necessary for use in connection with the articles in the container.

As has been stated, the articles are held against ready withdrawal through the window by the flange 14 so that pilfering is discourag'ed if not prevented. If desired of course a. transparent covering such as celluloid or glass may be placed over the window which of course will make the withdrawal of articles more difficult without impairing the displaying feature.

Inasmuch as the elements at the upper side of the carton are secured in the manner shown the upper end of the container is open so that access into the box may be had at this end and the contents readily withdrawn or inserted; The arrow indicates the direction in which one may move the hand into the box for withdrawing articles.

In lieu of the construction described in reference to the cover flap it may be desirable to eliminate the connector 31 as shown in Fig. 4 and hinge a cover flap direct to the rear wall 51' of the carton. This will be desirable in some cases and the desirability will depend more or less on the size andishape of the articles.

In order to provide other decorative effects for the front side of the box theflange as indicated at 54 in Fig. 5 may be provided with a plurality of inwardly projmting points 56 or of course the flange may be otherwise irregular orunsymmetrical'. This will not only enhance the decorative effects but will assist in holding articles in thecar ton and prevent their withdrawal through the window;

Although not shown, the display mem ber 20 may consist of a plurality of hinged together and overlying elements for providing morespace for advertising'or decorative material and may well be arranged to function also for closing the upper end of the box after the manner already described.

It will be noted that the elements at the upper end of the box are adapted to co-op erate in one way for closing up the cartnn, while in another way thev co-operato to provide an open end when the box is set up for display purposes as well as to provide display space and support the box in'desined'im clined position.

Preferably the carton is made from a' single sheet of material formed to have the desired elements and these maybe arranged of course to fold relative to one another by suitable bending lines made by scoring the blank. In order to obtain the hinged action of the parts it may be desirable in some cases to provide separate elements and hinge them together. This will all be-within the scope of the invention.

Having described the invention in the form at present preferred, .what I now claim ing flap having tucks hinged to its opposite ends, the said panel, side flaps and closing flap adapted to overlap one another to close said receptacle with the strap portion overlying said forward wall and the tucks overlying the side walls and being movable to open said receptacle wherein theclosing flap may extend below the same with said tucks inserted in slots in the walls of said receptacle to support the receptacle in an inclined position while the panel portion is movable to an angular position with respect to said forward wall and the rim movable to engage said side flaps whereby the said panel is supported in said angular position.

2. A carton of the class described comprising in combination, a forward wall having an opening therein to provide a flange therearound, side and rear walls forming a receptacle, a display panel hinged to said forward wall including a rim hinged thereto, side flaps hinged to said side walls, a closing flap hinged to said rear walls, a strap hinged to the outer edge of said closing flap having tucks hinged to its opposite ends, the said panel, side flaps and closing flap adapted to overlap one another to close said receptacle with the strap portion overlying said forward wall and the tucks overlying the side walls and being movable. to open said receptacle wherein the closing flap may extend below the same with said tucks inserted in slots in the walls of said receptacle to support the receptacle in an inclined position while the panel portion is movable to an angular position with respect to said forward wall and the rim movable to engage said side flaps whereby the said panel is supported in said angular position.

A carton of the class described comprising in combination, a forward wall having a display panel hinged to the upper side thereof provided with a. support portion movable thereon, side walls having side flaps hinged thereto at their upper sides, a connector hinged to the upper edge of said rear wall, a cover panel hinged thereto, a strap hinged thereto, tucks hinged to opposite ends thereof. the said walls being provided with tuck receiving slots, the said panel, side flaps and closing'flap being movable to overlapping position wherein the strap may overliethe forward wall and the tucks the side walls which are inserted in said slots and movable to open position wherein the panel is supported in an angular position by its support portion which is supported by said side flaps while the connector underlies said rear wall and the closing panel extends therefrom with the tucks lying against said side walls and inserted in said slots by the means of which the carton may be supported thereby in an inclined position.

4. A carton of the class described comprising in combination, forward, rear and side walls forming a receptacle, adisplay panel hinged at the upper end of said forward wall, members at the upper ends of said side walls for supporting said panel in display position angularly with respect to said forward wall, a connector hinged to the upper end of said rear wall and acover hinged thereto, a strap member hinged to the outer end of said cover having tucks at the opposite ends thereof, the side walls adjacent their upper ends and the rear wall adjacent the lower end thereof being provided with slots for receiving said tucks, all adaptedand arranged whereby the carton may be closed by said cover with the strap extending across the forward wall with the tucks in certain of said slots or the carton may be supported in tilted relation by the cover beinglheld to extend from the lower wall by said strap when the tucks are inserted in other slots.

5. A carton of the class described comprising in combination, front, side and rear walls to form a receptacle, the forward wall provided with a central cut-out to form an inwardly extending flange at opposite sides thereof, a display panel hinged to the upper end of said forward wall having a bendable portion, members hinged to the upper ends of said side walls to engage and co-operate with said bendable portion to hold the said panel in display position, a connector forming a part of the rear wall foldable on a line adjacent the upper end of said rear wall for abutting the rear face thereof below the line of fold, a cover hinged to the outer side of said connector, a strap hinged to the outer end of said cover and tucks hinged at opposite ends of said strap, all adapted and arranged whereby the cover may close the upper end of the receptacle with the strap and tucks overlying the upper ends of the forward and rear walls respectively or the cover may be held to extend from the lower wall by the strap which is held by the tucks, the

said tucks being held in either of said positions by tuck receiving slots provided in the said walls.
