The presentinvention relates to folding couch or day beds of the general type consisting of-a main stationary frame section and a movable or extension bed section and in which the extension bed section is mov'- able either into superposed relation with the stationary section to form a couch or seat or laterally of the stationary section to `form a double bed. The general object of my invention is to provide an improved construction yand jarra-ngement of the various partsof a couch bed of the type described.` A more specific object of my invention is to provide simple and effective means for assisting the user in simultaneously moving the spring structures of the stationary and extension sections to ither the open or closed positions. The parts have been described particularly-with reference to Figs. l-3 where the bed sect-ions Vare shown inA the closed position. Then it isV desired to move the sections to the open position, the side bar of the eXtenv sion trame-E is grasped by the user and the extension section littedupwardly and outwardly; This movement is initially assisted by the spring P which is in its extended position when the sections are in the closed position. Simultaneous with the movement oiithe extension section the spring structure Dis moved upwardly in a substantially perpendicular distance lin K with the extension F3 of the link F. The pivot points F2 and G2 move slowly to thek right while the link Kis movingfrom the position shown in Fig. 1 to a substantially horizontal position. On a further upward movement. of the links, the pivot` pins move to the left until the extensionsectjion is in the open` position. At that point. the pivot pins are at the extremel left The movement. of the links F and Grv fromV a substantially vertical position to the open position of the sections shown in Fig. t is accompanied by a tensioning of the spring O, which thus prevents a tool rapid downward movement. of the extension section.
The extension sectionis supported in the open position by the legs F1* and by the upperportion of the link Grk contacting with the bent portion of'v the U-shapedv bar` E5. Asshownin Fig. Atthe-springs of both sections are at the same levelwvhen the bed is in the open position andthe adjacent. sides of the springs are Yslightly spaced apart.
There is no tendency for the inner, bed section to drop and the'extension section to risc; due to a heavy load on the spring D as such loads are transmitted ldownwardly to the supporting links at points on the side of the link pivots tending to hold the sections in the open position. XVhile it is preferable that the user grasp the middle portion of the frame side when j operating they bed, the movements can be effected at any point along the frameA side. The bar- M effects a positive connection ybetween the operating4 mechanism at each end of the bed.
Vhen it is desiredto restore' the bed to' the closed position, the extension section is lifted and moved inwardly. VThe spring action in this case is the reverse ofthat occurring during-the opening movement and thespring O- first assists in the return movement andthe path dueto the connectionof the spring P later retards the lowering of the extension section into position. The eXten-v sion spring is supported inthe closed position partly by the link G contacting with the other bentportion of the U-shaped bar E5, partly by the legs E4 and partlyby the bar M which contacts with the lower side of the frame E.
My invention is characterized bythe sim-` plicity, strength and ease of manipulation of the construction, by the facilities for storing the bedding with spring structures of this type, by the small amount of floor space required in both the open and closed positions of the bed, and the maintenance of the supporting spring structure at the same high level in both the open and closed positions.
While in accordance with the provisions of the statutes, I have illustrated and described the best form of embodiment of my invention now known to me, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the form of they apparatus disclosed without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the appended claims and that in some cases certain features of my invention may be used to advantage without a corresponding use of other features.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A couch bed comprising a main stationary frame, an inner movable bed section, a movable extension bed section normally positioned above said inner bed section and movable relatively thereto to a position at one side thereof, a spring mattress structure for each of said bedsections, and mechanism for guiding the movements of said bed sections in an uprightcondition,
said mechanism comprising a pair of levers at each end of said bed, each of saidlevers having a fixed pivot connection with each of said spring structures and a movable pivot connection with said stationary frame.
2. A couch bed comprising a main stationary frame, an ,inner movable bed section, a movable extension bed section normally positioned above said inner bed section and movable relatively thereto to a position at one side thereof, a spring mattress structure for each of said bed sections,and mechanism for guiding the movements of said bed sections in an upright condition, said mechanism comprising a pair of levers at each end of said bed, each of said levers having a fixed pivot connection with each of said spring structures and a movable pivot connection with said stationary frame, a bar extending longitudinally of the bed and connected to corresponding levers of each pair, said bar being arranged to partially support the extension bed sectionvin 15 the closed position. i

5. 4A couch bed comprising a main stationary frame, an inner movable bed section, a movable extension bed section normally positioned above said inner section and movable relatively thereto to a position at one side thereof, a spring mattress structure for each of said bed sections, and mechanism for guiding the movements of said bed sections inan Vupright condition to open and closed positions of said bed, said mechanism comprising a pair of parallel levers at each end of said bed, each of said levers having iXed'pivot connections with each of said'bed sections and a movable pivot connection with said stationary frame, and tension springs extending between said stationary frame and one of said levers of each pair at opposite sides of said movable pivot connection.

Acouch bed comprising a main stationary frame, an inner movable bed section, a movable extension bed section normally positioned above saidinner section and movable relatively` thereto to a position at one side reo thereofi'a spring niattress structure foreach of said bed sections, and a mechanismat each end of the'hed for guiding thernovements of said spring structures in an upright 5 condition to open vand closed positions of said bed, said mechanism comprising aY pair of levers, each of saidlevers having va stationary pivot connection with, said extension bed section and amovable;- pivot m' connection with said stationary frame, a rigid-lateralextension ony each ofV said levers having a stationaryfpivot connection.
