This invention rel-mesa improvements in boilers. p
The general object of *this invention is to provide an improved boiler of the water tube type.
A specific objectof this invention is to provide a novel boiler wherein a steam drum and a mud drum are connected bya plurality of water circulating tubes and wherein all the circulating tubes are adapted to libcrate steam into the steam drum. v
A further object of the invention 'is'to provide a boiler wherein a steamdrum and a mud drum are arranged at rightangles to each other and connected by a plurality of water circulating tubes. I
Another object of this invention is to provide a boiler construction'wherein a plurality of steam drums are adapted to be connected by water circulating tubes to a single mud drum.
Other objects and the advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a section, partly in elevation, showing my improved boiler.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly in sec-. tion, of the boiler shown'in Fig. 1 with apart of the tubes removed, and
Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic View of a boiler made in accordance with my invention showing a plurality of steam drums connected to a single mud drum.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters I have indicated a boiler embodying the features of my invention generally at 10. This boiler comprises a boiler setting 12 having a space 13 fora furnace therein.
and having a breeching 14 to a smoke stack 15.
The boiler is of the water tube type and includes a steam drum 16 and. a mud drum 17. The axis of the steam drum is arranged at right angles to the axis of the mud drum; that is, the longitudinal axis of the steam drum 16 runs from the front to the rear of the boiler and the longitudinal axis of the mud drum 17 runs from side to side of the boiler 10 as clearly shown in the drawings.
The-steam -andfmud drums are connected adjacent the rear of the boiler by a bank of tubiesQO and towards the front of the boiler bya bank oftubes 22. I
fA-s clearly shown inthe drawings the t5 -t1ibes ofthe'bank 20 curve-outwardly from "the lower sidesof the-steam drum at right angles to thelongitudinal axisof-the steam drum. These tubes also extend straight downwardffor a distance and then curve inco wardly to engage the topsides of the mud "drum at right angles-to the longitudinal axis of the mud -'drum. The second mentioned curvature of 'the' tubes "20 is accordingly transverse "to the first curvature.
The tubes of the forward bank22 curve "outwardly from the top sides ofthe mud drum I7 at-right angles to the longitudinal *axis of the mud drum,'then extend upwardly inclined towards the frontof the boiler, then curve upwardly and finally cur've inwardly to the bottom sides of, the steam drum 16. Thus the third curvature is transverse to the first *two curvatures of the tubes in the bank '22. The steam drumlta is shown as 7 provided with a water gauge 24:, a steam outlet 25, and may have other accessories as desired:'f;
The boiler may be provided with baffles 26, 27,-*and28,which maybe arranged in a so manner t'o iproper 'ly conduct the hot productsgof combustion to produce the best resu'ltsl It will be=under-stood that the boiler is adapted for use with various types of he'a't producing devices whether it iscoal, S5
gas, or oil, orother means. The arrangemenjts o'f the b'afiles may also be changed to sui'tvariousconditions. 1 p
The hot gases from'thecombustion space 13 "will jfirst 'pass between theitubes of the ban-k22,-then between thetubes of the bank 2O,"'an d ithence out the-"stack 15. As the barikZQQ is the nearest the combustion chamber the water therein will be heated to a much higher degree than the water in the barikQOflthu-s the'circulation of water will be from the "steam drum 16, through the ibank' P20 ito the hind drum 17, and thence -through bank22 to the steam drum. The lhot gases also contact with the underside of the steam drum 16 and maintain a high degree of heat therein.
As all the circulating tubes of the boiler open into the steam drum '16, steam disengaged in the bank 20 will be liberated in the steam drum and will not pass through the mud drum l7.
With my improved construction I provide a boiler which is economical to construct owing to the fact thatno water drum is used, and which is highly efiicient owing to the fact that the hot gases directly fromthe combustion chamber contact with such a large area of the water circulating elements.
In Fig. 3 I have diagrammatically shown 'a front view of the arrangements of the drums and tubes of a boiler wherein a plurality of steam drums are-connected to a single mud drum. In this boiler steam drums and 31 are connected to a single mud drum 32 by sets of banks of tubes 33 and 34.
include forward and rearward banks of tubes similar to the banks 20 and 22 of the boiler 10 just described.
It will be understood that in a boiler constructed in accordance with my invention any number ofsteam drums may be con- In a boiler including a furnace or combustion chamber and a smoke stack at the rear end in the upper portion thereof, a steam drum adjacent the top of the boiler and extending from the front to the rear thereof and a mud drum positioned below on a plane at right angles to said curvature adjacent said steam drum and in a direction opposite to the curvature adjacent said steam drum, a baffle plate between said first bank of tubes and said second bank of tubes and extending upwardly from said mud drum, the major portion of the length of the bottom of said steam drum being exposed to hot gases generated in said combustion chamber, a second battle, said second battle being vertically arranged between certain of the tubes of said first bank of tubes and extending downwardly from said steam drum and forwardly of said smoke stack. 7
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature.
j GLENV ILLE A. COLLINS.
