IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-SIGNALS FOR RAILROADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,410, dated September 19, 1876; application filed July 31, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BROWN, of
Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia flag, and bell so as to form a hand-signal for railroad-crossings.
A represents a rod, staff, or handle, to which an ordinary signal-flag, B, is attached in the usual way. To the end of the staff A is attached a hell, 0, a rattle, or other sounding device, so that it may sound when the flag is waved, and thus call to it the attention of those who may be looking the other way, and who might not observe the signal.
Instead of a flag, a lantern or other sightsignal may be used, so as to give a sight and a sound signal at the same time.
I am aware that an audible and visible signal have been conjoined, and the junction is not broadly new; but
What I claim is-- 'A hand-signal for railroad-crossings, con
sisting of the staff A, flag B, and bell 0, arranged substantially as shown and described.
