This invention relates to a bed spring and has for its prima-ry object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, anfarticle s of such class which will not sag under Weight and which Will support a mattress -or-the like in a level condition.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lbed spring possessing the advantages aforesaid, wherein alternately disposed spring suspended support and check Cables are employed, and wherein the supportcables are connected in a `novel manner with cross supports which interlace With the check sup- A further object 4of the invention is to provide a bed spring as aforesaid which is sim.- ple in construction, strong, durable, thoroughly efficient in its intended use, and 4which may be readily taken apart in .order to facilitate the shipping or storing thereof.

A bedspring i-n accordance With-.this invention -includes a pai-r of spaced, longitudinally extending, bottom supporting rails, vsuc-h as 1,V which j are provided, at Atheir ,ends with upstanding lugs 2; Secured to the lugs 2 at each'end of the pair of rails is a stationary end member 3 of angle-iron construction having a horizontal portion t projecting out- Wardly from the lugs 2 in the longitudinal 55 direction of. the rails, and having a `vertical portion 5 disposed in parallel relation to the lugs 2 and secured thereto by means ofsuitable bolts 6. Adjacent the free edge thereof, the horizontal portion 8 of each adjustable end member 7 is vprovided with a plurality of spaced 70 openingslO yfor engagement by a plurality of spaced, relatively long helical springs 11, and a plurality of relatively short helical springs j 12. In the arrangement of the springs 11 and 12, one of the relatively long springs 1 1 is adjacent each end ofthe end member 7 and the relatively short springs 12 are alternately disposed with respect tothe springs11. In lthis arrangement there ivill Y be employed one more of the ,long springs 11 than oftheshort springs '12, and the number of `long springs employed is optional.
Connecting each of the long springs 11 secured to ,one of lthe end members 7 to one of the long springsy 1l carried by the opposite end piece 7 is a duplex support cable 1'3.. Each cable 13 consists of a pair of spaced Wires 14 vhaving their ends connected with the oppositely disposed springs 11 by means of clips 15 and connecting pieces 16.
Each of the clips 15 'includes van elongated body portion 17 extending transversely Aacross the spaced Wires 14, bending around the Wires as indicated at 18, and terminating in returned vkend portions 19 Which-extend in 95 parallel relation to the body yportion 17 and which are secured thereto and to 4each other `by means of fa rivet 20. Extending out ivardly from each `cli-p l15 in a 'longitudinal Y direction With respect to thejcable 13 is anV 10G ear 21 for connection with a connecting piece 16.
Each of the connecting pieces 16 is substantially triangular in shape and adjacent each corner thereof is provided with an opening 22. One of the openings 22 is engaged by the hook end 23 of a spring 11 and the other openings 22 have extended therethrough tlie wires 14 of the cable 13. The portion of each wire 14 which is extended through an opening 22 is returned as indicated at 24 and is securely held in such returned position by means of a rivet 20 which clamps together the body portion 17 and i'eturned portion 19 of the clips 15.
The ear 21 of each clip'15 is rigidly secured to a connecting member 16 by means of a rivet 25. The springs 12 ofeach end member 7 are connected with the oppositely disposed springs 12 of the opposite end member 7 by means of check Vcables 26 each of which is provided at each end with a clip 27 and connecting piece 28 similar to the clips 15 and connecting piece 16 heretofore described. The check cable 26 is constructed in the same manner as the support cable 13 except that the check cable 26 is materially longer than the support cable 13. The wires of the check cable 26 are indicated by the numeral 29.
Extending transversely of the cables 13 and`26 is a plurality of cross supports indicated generally by the numeral 30. Each of the cross supports 30 consists of a pair of end 'clips 31. a plurality of intermediate clips 32, and a plurality of duplex chains 33 connecting the clips 31 and 32. The end clips 31 are secured to the outer support cables 13 and each is substantially yokeshapedV and having its leg portions 34 extending transversely ofthe wires 14 above and below the latter and connected adjacent the ends of the leg portions with the ends of a chain 33 by means of a rivet 35. kExtending through the leg portions 34, intermediate the wires 14,`is a rivet 36 upon which is mounted a spacer disc 37. rlhe spacer disc 37 is disposed between the leg portions 34 and also between the wires 14 of the cable 13 whereby the latter are maintained in spread relation. v
The intermediate clips 32 are connected to the` intermediate cables 13 and each consists of a pair of elongated lengths of metal 38 extending transversely of the cables above and below the latter and connected at their ends to the chains 33 by means of rivets 39. Extending through the elements 38 is a rivet 40 upon which is mounted a spacer disc 41 which is disposed between the elements 38 and also between the wires of the cables whereby the wires are maintained in spread relation. The chains 33 connecting the clips of the cables 13 extend above,A and below the wires 29 of "the check cables 26.
In the use of a bed spring in accordance with this invention a mattress is normally supported on the support cables 13 and when a weight is deposited on the mattress, sagging is prevented by the check cables 26 and cross supports 30 which secure the cables 13 with respect to the cables 26. Owing to the manner in which the cross supports are connected to the support cables 13, the wires of the latter are maintained taut and in spaced relation. y
It is thought the many advantages of a bed spring in accordance with this invention will bereadily apparent, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the size, shape and ai'- rangement of parts may be resorted to, so long as such changes fall within tliescope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a bed spring, a duplex support cable consisting of a pair of wires, a pair of helical springssupportingthecable at the ends thereof, and means for connecting the cable with each of said springs, said means includinga clip connected to said wires, and a substantially triangular connecting element conelement being provided adjacent the sides thereof with openings through which the wires extend, said wires having end portions secured by said clip.

In a bed spring, a duplex support cable 1 the latter to provide end'portions extending in parallelrrelation to the body portion, a rivet connecting theend portions together aiid to the body portion, and an ear extending from the body portion and-riveted to said triangular connectingelement, said connecting element being provided adjacent the sides thereof with openings through which the wires' extend, said wires'having end portions secured by said clip.y Y
3. In a bed spring, a duplex support cable consisting of a pair of wires, a pair of helical springs supporting the cable at the ends thereof, and means for connecting the cable with each of said springs, said means including a clip connected to said wires, a substantially i triangular connecting element connected to the clip and spring, said clip including an elongated body portion extending transversely across the kwires and bent around the latter to provide end portions extending in parallel nected to the clip and spring, said connecting 95.
ramasse relation to the body portion, a rivet connecting the end portions together and to the body portion, and an ear extending from the body portion and riveted to said triangular connecting element, said triangular connecting element being formed adjacent one corner thereof with an opening through which an end portion of the helical spring extends, said connecting element further being formed adm jacent its other corners with openings through which the wires extend, said wires having end portions secured by said clip.
4. In a bed spring, a plurality of spring suspended support cables, a plurality of alternately disposed, spring suspended check cables, each of said cables including a pair of wires, and a plurality of spaced cross supports extending transversely of the check v cables and connecting the support cables to- 2n gether, each of said cross supports including a clip extending across the wires of each support cable above and below the latter, a spacer disc interposed between the wires and riveted to the clips, and a duplex chain connecting adjacent clips, said chain extending above and below the wires of the check cables.
