LQMARKOWITZ MECHANICAL TOY Filed Nov. 1. 1930 3 Sheets-Sheet 5 l-E:E=E======2z Lo uzb'yyazrzfo Patented Sept. 15, 1931 STATES LOUIS MARKOWITZ, OF INDIAN-OLA, PENNSYLVANIA MECHANICAL 'I'OY Application filed November This invention relates to a mechanical toy, the general object of the invention being to provide a casing having figures supported on the top thereof, with means whereby upon 5 the pulling of a string, means within the casing will be caused to move the figures to impart a dancing movement to some of the figures and movement of the hands and feet of other of the figures, the string being rewound by the momentum of the parts so that it can be again pulled to keep the figures in motion.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing the toy being actuated by a child.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View through the toy.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an end view.
Figure 5 is aview of one of the yoke-shaped members.
In these views, the numeral 1 indicates a casing having a channel-shaped bracket 2 secured to its upper part, to each upright of which is fastened a figure 3 representing a child. The arms and legs 4 of each figure are connected to the crank shafts 5 which pass transversely through the body of the figure and the cranks of these shafts are engaged by the loops 6 and 7 on each limb of a yoke 8. Thus when the yoks is moved vertically, the arms and legs of the two figures will be moved.
The lower portions of the limbs of the yoke pass through holes 9 in the top of the casing and the yoke has an eye 10 at the center of its bight which is engaged by an eye on a link 11 which is connected to a crank 12 of a shaft 13 journaled in the sides of the casing.
1, 1930. Serial No. 492,821.
A second yoke 14 has its limbs passing through holes in the top of the casing and the limbs are attached to the figures 15, the arms and legs of which may be pivotally connected with the body so that when the yoke is, moved vertically, the figures will be given a dancing motion. The bight of this yoke is connected by a link 16 with the crank 17 on the shaft 13. A large gear 18 is connected with the shaft 13 and meshes with a pinion 19 on a shaft 20 journaled in the sides of the casing and paralleling the first shaft. The shaft 20 is provided with a fly wheel 21 which is located outside of the casing and a string 22 has one end connected with the shaft 20 and its other end has a knob 23 thereon. Thus it will be seen that by turning the shaft 20 to Wind the string thereon and then exerting a pull on the string, the shaft 20 is rotated and the movement of said shaft is imparted to the shaft 13 through means of the gearing 18 and 19 so that the yokes are moved vertically and thus motion is imparted to the figures. The momentum of the shaft 20, un-
der the action of its fly wheel 21, will rewind the string so that it can be again pulled upon and thus the device can be kept in operation as long as desired. Of course, after each pull upon the string, the same should be released so that it can be rewound upon the shaft.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is p A toy of the class described comprising a casing, figures provided with movable legs and arms arranged on the casing, a crank shaft journaled in the casing, yokes, links connecting the bights of the yokes with the cranks of the shaft, the yokespassing through the top of the casing, means for connecting the limbs of the yokes with the legs and arms of the figures so that vertical movement of the yokes will impart motion to the said legs and arms, a second shaft journaled in the casing, gearing connecting the two shafts together, a fly wheel outside of the casing and on the second shaft and a string connected with the second shaft and wound next to the balance wheel on the shaft, whereby a pull on the string will rotate the shafts and thus motion is imparted to the figures.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
