The present invention is directed to improvements in bur lar alarms for safes.
The primary ob ect of the invention is to provide an alarm of this character constructed and arranged so that when the safe door is open the circuit will be closed, thus sounding an alarm.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind so constructed that should the safe door hinge bolt be removed the alarm will be sounded.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of connection between the hinge bolt of the safe door and a switch, 5, which will be positively operated upon opening the door or removing the hinge bolt thereof.

Referring to the drawin s, 1 designates a safe, 2 the door thereof, an 3 the door hinge bolt, all of which are of conventional form.
Adapted for attachment to the hinge pintle 3 is an arm 4 having clamps 5 and 6 upon its ends, the clamp-5 being adapted to engage the pintle 3 ad acent its lower end, while the clamp 6 is engaged on the upper end of the rod 7, the lower end of which is provided with a rib 8, the purpose of which will be later explained.
Mounted upon the foundation 8 u on which the safe rests is a casing 9 in whic is mounted a switch 10 comprising a body 11 of suitable insulating material having a recess 12 formed therein for reception of the metallic cup 13, the cup being rovided with a lug 14 having a socket 15 t erein. Supported by the side wall of the cupis a fiber ring 16 and to the inner periphery of which is fixed a split contact band 17, the adjacent ends of which are maintained in spaced relation.

'a bearing 19in which is engaged a shaft 20, the lower end of which'is journaled in the socket 15. The upper end of the shaft is provided with a groove 21 for det'achably receiving the rib 8 of the rod 7, as more clearly 55 illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings.
The shaft has pivotally connected thereto an arm 22 carrying a contact roller 23 for engagement with the band, said roller being held yieldably enga ed with said band 50 throu h the medium of a coil spring 24 which is pre erably mounted as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. r
The band 17 has a binding'post 25 secured thereto and leading therefrom is a conduc' .55
' tor wire 26 a similar wire 27 bein connected to the lug 14. The conductor 26 has in circuit a bell 28 and battery 29. One terminal of the conductor 26 has a switch 30 connected thereto, there being a shunt conductor 31 1 connecting the contact 32 with the conductor 27. A conductor 33 leads from the conductor 26 and is in circuit with the conductor 27 through the switches 34 and 35, which are shown open 'inFigure 5.
In front of the foundation 8' is located a plurality of switches 36, which will close the circuit through the conductors 26 and 27 through conductors 37 and 38, said switches being normally open. A rubber mat 39 is no placed so that should a robber step upon the same at various points at least one of the switches 36 will close, thus completing the circuit and sounding the alarm. In this manner the alarm may be sounded before the '35 robber will have chance to reach the safe.
Fixed to the shaft 20 is one terminal of a coil spring 41, the other terminal thereof being fixed to the body 11, the purpose of which wi 1 be later explained.
As shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, the switch 34 is closed and should arobber succeed in opening the door 2 the swinging opening of the same will rotate the bolt 3 and thus the shaft 7 through the medium of the connecting arm 4, whereupon the shaft 20 will be rotated which action will cause the roller 23 to ride upon the band 17, thus closing the circuit and sounding the alarm. It will be observed that normally the roller 23 engages the fiber band .100

It will be of course understood that bank attendant will open the switch 34 before attempting to open the safe door, in order to break the circuit and prevent sounding the alarm. The switches and 35 are normally maintained open in order that shoulda robber demandthat the clerk disconnect the circuit the clerk can close either of these switches in order to close the circuit even if the switch 34 is open, owing to the presence of the shunt conductor 31. In other words, the robber not being familiar with the arrangement of switches will not know which switch is efiec- I tive; for cutting 0E the alarm, therefore the l clerk may place the alarm in'circuit without knowledge thereof by the robber It will be obvious that when the robber I steps upon themat 39 at least one of the I switches 36 will be closed, thereby closing thecircuit and sounding thealarm.
