G. 757) lhis invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon. T his invention relates to a holder for safety-razor-blades, and more particularly to a holder of this character for readily utilizing new or already used safety-razor-blades as a knife which may be employed by surgoons, furriers, and others for ripping, trimming, cutting, slicing, scraping, paring vegetables and fruits, sharpening pencils, erasing ink and various other purposes.
The principal object of my inventionis to provide an economical, simple, and highly etficient holder of the character described, wherein any type of safety-razor blade including he Gillette both old and new pattern, Gem and Ever-Ready type is readily clamped in operative and rigid position Within the holder, and which may be readily removed therefrom.
Another object of my invention is to provide a guard member for a satety-razor-blade on a holder therefor which when not in operative position for covering the blade acts as means for permitting the handle portion to be more firmly gripped by the hand.
Another object of this invention is to provide a holder for safety-razor-blades with a detachable spring member for supporting a guard member thereon, and for permitting the holder to be hung on ahook or other suitable support, thereby insuring that a knife is always ready for instant use. I
It is therefore the aimand purpose of this invention to provide a holder for any type of safety-razor-blade which is cheap to construct, simple, eflicient in use, and which readily engages the safety-razor-blade and permits the same to be readily removed therefrom. Means on the holderfor permitting a guard member provided thereon to he slidably and removably connected to the holder and to permit the complete assembly to be positioned on a hook or the like for instant use is also comprised within the scope of this invention.
. With the above and other objects and ad-' vantages in View the invention consists in the arrangement and combination'of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the occompanying drawlngs; it being understood however that various changes in form and proportion and other details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Referring more particularly now to the accompanying drawings in which corresponding parts are indicated by similar reference characters.

In the illustrated embodiment characterizing this invention my improved holder for safety-razor-blades comprises mainly a portion 1 U-shaped in cross-section which forms a handle and also a housing for a detachable spring locking member 2 and razor blade 3. A guard member 4 is slidably mounted on the spring locking member 2. The housing and handle member 1 is formed from a sheet metal blank 5 stamped into a general rectangular shape as illustrated in Fig. 5 having a hook or lug receiving aperture 6. The blank 5 has an end portion 7 Intermediate the extremities of the end portion 7 is a cutout portion 8 to form stop or closure members 9. At the lower end of the blank 5 is a cut-out portion 10 leaving projections 11. The blank thus formed is bent upon its central horizontal axis A into the form of a U as shown in Fig. 6, the stop or closure mem bers 9 are bent inwardly to meet each other and form a closure at one end of the handle member 1. The projections 11 of the blank 5 are reversely bent to form slide-guideways 12 to receive the lower portion 13 of the insertable spring locking member 2. The guard member 4 is U-shaped in cross-section and made of one piece of resilient material such as sheet metal having a projecting hook member 14 intermediate its side wall 15 which is bent inwardly for slidably engaging the said member 3, while the other side edge 16 thereof is designed tobe pressed up under the side 17 of the handle member 1. The spring locking member 2 is formed of a single piece of wire as illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings which is bent at one end into a loop 18 to form the upper portion 19 which terminates in a hook or lug member 20 and the parallel or lower pin portion 13. The loop 18 is also desirable in giving the necessary resiliency or spring action to the spring, locking mem ber 2. The spring member 2 thus formed is slid within the handle portion 1 of the holder, the lower portion 13 thereof projecting into and positioned within the slideguide-ways 12 while the hook or lug member 20 on the upper portion 19 engages in the aperture 6 for locking the spring locking member 2 in place. The spring locking member 2 is of sufficient length to permit the looped end 18 thereof to project out of the handle 1 sufficiently for permitting the holder to be hung in a convenient place on a hook or'the like. It will thus be seen that the lower portion 13 of the spring locking member 2 is inserted through the first slideguide-wav 12 then through the projecting hook member 14 of the guard member 4 and finally through the second slide-guide-way Should it be desired to utilize the holder for safety-razor-blades of the Gillette, either of the old or new type, a clamping attach.- ment 21 as illustrated in Figs. 1. 2. 3 and 6 or the clamping attachment 22 as illustrated in Figs. 9, 10, and 11 may be employed. The clamping attachment 21 as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 6 consists of two rectangular plates 23 and 24 made of metal or other suitable material which are of substantially the same configuration except that in addition the plate 23 is provided with a projection 25 to be bent inwardly for forming a hook clip 26 for engaging one edge of the other plate 24 as illustrated in Fig. 1. The upper and outer side of the plates 23 and 24 are of a greater thickness than the lower portion thereof which provides shoulders 27 for be ter causing the plates 23 and 24 to more rigidly and securely clamp the blade 3 within the handle member 1 of the holder as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The safety-razor-blade 3 of the Gillette type is placed on the plate 23 the outer end 28 thereof being placed under the hooked clip 26, the other plate 24 is next placed over the blade 3 and the outer edge thereof is positioned under the hooked clip 26 thereby securely holding the blade 3 in rigid position. To further hold the blade 3 in rigid position and prevent lateral movement thereof between the plates 23 and 24, one of the plates may be provided with apertures 29 corresponding to the apertures 30 provided in the blade 3 while the other plate may be provided with projections 31 which are adapted to project through the apertures 30 of the safety-razor blade 3 and the aperture 29 on the other plate as shown in Fig. 6. This assembly is then vertically positioned within the handle member 1 and forced against the closed end 32 thereof, t .e shoulders 27 of the plates 23 and 24 engaging the resilient side walls of the handle member 1 and being held in place thereby. The clamping attachment 21 is further held in place by means of the lower portion 13 of the spring member 2 and the hook or lug 20, the lower portion 13 of the spring member 2 abutting the lower edge of the shoulders 27 while the hook or lug 20 thereof abuts the inner end 27 of the shoulders 27.
V The other clamping attachment 22 for safety-razor blades of the Gillette type as illustrated in Figs. 9,10 and 11 of the drawings consistsof a single blank of metal having tongs 33 integral with its lower edge to be bent through and around the apertures 34 of the safety-razor blade 35 of the Gillette type and then to be bent upwardly in the form of a hook to hold the blade in place.
The upper edge of the clamping attachment 22 is pressed down as to form a shoulder or stop member 36 for the upper edge of the blade 35. The tongs 33 form shoulders which are adapted to abut the lower portion 13 of the spring locking member 2, the hook or lug 20 thereof abutting the inner end. of the clamping attachment 22 thereby holding the assembly in rigid position within the holder.
In using safety-raZor-blades already provided with a shoulder such as the Gem or Ever-Ready type it is only necessary to place the blade within the holder 1 and cause the lower portion 13 of the spring locking memher 2 to abut against the lower edge of the shoulder 87 of the Ever-Ready type 01" satetyrazor blade 38 while the hook or lug 20 on the upper portion of the spring locking member 2 abuts the inner end of the shoulder 37 for aiding the resilient handle member 1 in holding the blade 38 rigid within the holder 1. To remove the various parts of the holder, the hook or lug 20 of the spring locking member 2 is pressed inwardly so as to disengage the aperture 6 provided on the handle member 1, the looped end 18 of the spring locking member 2 is then pulled in a rearward direction so as to permit the razor blade and its clamping member, if the blade is of the Gillette type, to be removed together with the guard member l of the holder.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple and eilicient holder for any type of safety-razor-blade which is well adapted for all the purposes designated. Even though I have herein shown and described my device as comprising certain structural elements it is nevertheless to be under stood that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention which broadly comprises, a holder for safety-razor-blades consisting of a handle portion, said handle portion having a body made of sheet metal bent to form a handle and housing member closed at one end for the blade, and containing an aperture, a guard member for the blade, and a resilient spring locking member providing a guide member and locking means for holding the handle portion and guard portion together, said spring locking member provided with a loop portion and a hook, the said hook adapted to engage the aperture in said handle member for locking the spring member in place and engage the inner edge of a shoulder for the razor blade to hold the same against the closed end of the handle member, and said loop providing means for hanging the holder in a convenient place and give the necessary resiliency or spring action to the spring locl ing member. Clamping means for safety- Zor-blades having two cutting edges such as the Gillette-type for providing shoulders and holding the blade within the holder is also comprised within the scope of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A safety-razor-blade a. handle portion having a blade receiving part, a guide-way on each end of said handle portion, a pin in said guide-ways, and a guard for said blade slidably mounted on said pin.

8. Means for holding a safetyrazor-blade of the two-edged type comprising a handle portion, said handle portion comprising a .iody of sheet metal bent to form a handle and housing member closed at one end for clamping plates for securing the blade therebetween, the said handle and housing member having an aperture and slide-guide-ways and said clamping plates provided with shoulders, and a spring locking means providing a guide member, locking means .and a loop member detachably connected to the handle member, said guide member slidably connected to said guide-Ways and said looking means engaging said aperture, the said guide member-and said locking means abutting the shoulders of said plates for holding the clamping plates in rigid position against the closed end of said handle member.
9. Means for holding a safety-razor-blade of the two cutting edge type containing apertures comprising a handle portion, said handle portion comprising a body of sheet metal bent to form a handle and housing member for a clamping attachment for the blade, said clamping attachment consisting of a blank of metal having hook members integral with the lower edge thereof adapted to be bent upwardly to engage the apertures of said blade.
