A TTORNEYfi Patented Sept. 15, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ERNEST DAVIS, 01 SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE PROSPERITY COMPANY INC., 01 SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK ELECTRIC MOTION TRANSMITTING MECHANISM AND CONTROLS FOR PRESSING MACHINES Application filed October 11, 1929. Serial No. 398,965.
This invention relates to machines having an opening and closing movement, as garment and laundry pressing machines, and has for its object, a particularly simple, efiicient and compact electric motor actuating mechanism for closing the press, and controls for said actuating mechanism.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a conventional garment or laundry press embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic view of the actuating mechanism and the controls therefor.
I have here illustrated my invention as embodied in a conventional type of garment or laundry press in which the cooperating pressing elements are respectively, a buck 1 and a head 2 movable toward and from the buck, the buck being mounted on a suitable bracket or bolster 3 which in turn is mounted upon a suitable frame 4; and the head being carried by a lever 5 pivoted between its ends at 6 to an upright 7 rising from the frame 4.
The actuating mechanism comprises an electric motor and electrically operated motion transmitting means between the motor and the press head 2.
8 designates the electric motor.
9 designates the electric motion transmitting mechanism, which we shall call for convenience, a second motor. The second'motor includes a rotating armature 10, the shaft 11 of which is connected to an armature shaft 12 of the motor 8 in any suitable manner, as by a coupling 13.
14 is a casing which carries rotatable field coils 15 of the second motor 9, the casing 14 being connected to the head 2 by suitable motion transmitting means.
The mot-ion transmitting means here illustrated, in addition to the lever 5, comprises a link 16 pivoted at one end at 17 to a radial arm 18 on the casing 14, and at its other end at 19 to the rear arm of the lever 5. The press is opened when the second motor 9 is deenergized by a counterspring 20.
In the normal operation of the machine, when the press is open the motor 8 is preferably constantly running and is connected in the feed circuit 21 and 22 by a circuit including a wire 23, blade 24 of a double pole switch, conductor 25, wire 26 which is connected to one of the terminals of the motor 8, the motor 8, wire 27 connected to the other terminal, the other blade 28 of the double pole switch. and wire 29. The double pole switch and also a cut-out snap switch 30 in the conductor 26 are closed in the normal operation of the machine, so that power is constantly supplied to the motor 8.
The second motor 9 is connected to the feed wires 21 and 22 through a branch circuit consisting of wire 23, blade 24 of the double pole switch, wire 25, wire 31, switch 32, switch contact 33, wire 34, switch 35, switch contact 36, wire 3?, brush 38, the armature and field coils of the motor 9, brush 39, wire 40, wire 27 switch blade 28 of the double pole switch, and wire 29. The switches 32 and 35 are normally open and are manually operable as by push buttons 41 and 42 connected to the switches by links 43 and 44 respectively, these push buttons being acted upon by springs 45 and 46 which tend to open the switches 32 and 35 when the push buttons are released. Although two push buttons are shown, obviously, one ush button or one switch may be employed. lwo switches are used connected in series in order that both hands of the operator may be employed while the press is closing. The motor 9 is similar to a torque motor and may be shunt, series or compound wound.
Means is provided for holding the press closed when the push buttons 41 and 42 are released, this means being controlled by the closing of the press. This means as here shown comprises, a normally open tumbler switch 47 in a shunt circuit around the switches 32, 35, this switch being operable by the motion transmitting means between the motor 9 and the press head and so arranged as to be operated or closed when the press reaches nearly closed position.
The switch 47 is here shown as mounted on the back leg of the frame and as having closed release switch 51 is provided, in the shunt circuit, having means as a spring 52 tending to close it and being operable into open position by a trip lever 53. The switch 51 is connected to a wire 54 which is connected to the wire 37 and coacts with a contact 55 which is connected by a wire 56 to the terminal 57 with which the switch 47 coacts. The other terminal 58 of the switch 47 is connected by a wire 60 to the wire 25. The switch 47 may be of any suitable form, size and construction.
In operation, upon depression of the push buttons 41 and 42, the switches 32 and 35 are closed against the action of their returning springs 45 and 46 so that the second motor 9 is energized and the rotation of the armature shaft 12 of the motor 8 transmitted through the armature and field of the motor 9 and link 16 to the press head carrying lever 5 to close the press. When the press app-roaches closed position, the motion transmitting link 16 throws the switch 47 to close the shunt circuit around the switches 32 and 35 so that the circuit through the second motor 9 remains closed after the operator releases the push buttons 41 and 42 and the press remains closed as lon as desired under influence of the torque eveloped by the motor 8. To open the press, the trip lever 53 is actuated to open the switch 35 and thus deenergize the second motor 9, whereupon the press opens under the influence of the countersprings 20. The motor 9 acts as a magnetic clutch between the motor 8 and the motion transmitting means which connect with the movable ressing element. When the armature and eld coils of the motor 9 are deenergized the clutch is in effect released and the motor 8, which is constantly supplied with energy will again rotate. The motor 8 is thus continuously rotating at all times except when the press is closed under pressure and this continuous operation provides the advantage that the motor possesses momentum which renders the operation of the press faster when the armature and field coils of the second motor 9 are energized to clutch the motor 8 to the motion transmitting means.
