Abstract

236,076. British-American Laundry Machinery Co., Ltd., (American Laundry Machinery Co.). Sept. 6, 1924. Ironing - machines with pressing action only. - Two poweroperated presses are arranged with the motors and the controlling gear for the motors interconnected in such a way that operation of one of the presses automatically controls the operation of the other press. The movable press head 5, Fig. 1, of each press is provided with a guard 18 supported by cranked rods 19 carried by counter-weighted bell-cranks 30 loose upon the pivot 21 of the arm 4 that carries the press head. The movements of the press head of the selected press are controlled by movement of the guard, for which purpose contacts 33, 34, Fig. 7, which bridge alternately contacts 31, 32 in the circuit of the motor controller, are connected to one of the bell-cranks by a rod 29, the controller comprising spaced segments 53, 54, Fig. 5, a stationary bush 60 and a revolving brush 55, the shaft of which is driven by the motor. Locking means to ensure the movement. of the guard simultaneously with the press head during certain periods of the cycle, and to permit independent movement at other periods comprise. spring-pressed bars 63 shaped at their upper ends releasably to engage catches 65 on the guard. Alternative locking means comprise a lug 76, Fig. 16, which coacts with a shouldered portion of the bell-crank 20 and which is carried by a lever 75 connected with the armature of an electromagnet 73 carried by the arm 4 and arranged in the circuit of the motor of the press. In a third form, not shown, the guards of two presses are interconnected by a length of cord passing around anchored pulleys so that as one guard is raised the other is lowered. The wiring diagram, Fig. 18, shows the two presses with the double-throw switch 88 and the switches 82, 82a set for the control of both presses from the operation of the left-hand press and shows this press open with the guard elevated and ready for lowering, the second press and guard being closed. Lowering of the guard of the first press comletes the circuit at the contacts 31, whereupon the motors 6, 6<a> of both presses are operated to close and open the left and right presses respectively. Provision may also be made for controlling automatically any two out of three presses by operation of any selected one of the three, the circuits in this case including an electromagnetically controlled commutator, the electromagnet being energized and de-energized in accordance with the movements of the guard of the selected press.
