Description

R. DICK SAFETY SWING SEAT FiledOct. 30, 1929 sept. 15,1931.
Patented sept. 15, 1931 UNETED STATES PATENT ori-ics ROBERT DICK, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA SAFETY SWING SEAT Application led October 30, 1929. Serial No. 403,467.
y My invention pertains to a safety swing seat. In public and school play grounds children and attendants have been injured by heilig struck by the seats of swings7 and an object of this invention is the construction of a seat which if it should strike a person, would not be apt to do serious injury, if inflicting any material injury whatever.
A further object of my invention is the construction of a seat of relatively soft pliable vention is forming a seatV of relatively soft and flexible material, so that this will conf form somewhatto the body of the user of the swing and thereby givey a'comfortable seat and at the same time avoid the danger of the person using the swing falling off the seat, and with this is coupled the factor of the seat being of such character that should a person be struck by the seat or the yperson in the Y swing, the damage if any, would be comparatively insignificant.
In constructing the seat, I may make this of leather or of heavy fabric or other flexible material, with certain metal reinforcing and metal straps to attach to the swing ropes or '35 chains. `The metal straps preferably have an eye to which the swing ropes or chains may be connected and to each eye there is connected a seat band perferably of stiff leather, which forms the mainl portion of the seat. Connected to the metal strap and to the seat band at the upper back portion there is a back band to engage the back of a person slightly below the small of the back. This is prefer- 45 ably made of leather or of heavy fabric and also preferably reinforced by a metal band.
A center band is connected to the center of the back and the lower part of the seat band, thus giving a seat support as well as a partial back support. l
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying'drawings in which,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view;
Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section on the fr;
line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line of Fig. 2.
In, constructing my invention I utilize metal suspension straps 11. These are illustrated as having a head 12 with an eye 13 therethrough and an outside depending web 14, there being a shoulder 15. A seat band 1G is secured'to the web of the suspension straps 1l as by rivets 17. These straps have a side portion 18 anda bottom portion 19 joined by a curved section 20. A back band 21 is v also preferably formed of leather or of heavy fabric and has a. metal band 22 connected together by rivets 23. This metal band preferably has beaded upper and lower edges 24, thereby strengthening the metal band as well as providing edges which do not have a cutting action. The back band and the metal band associated therewith, are preferably also secured to the suspension straps using some of the rivets which attach the scat band I to the suspension strap. Y
A center band 25 is connected to the metal of the back band at the portion indicated at 26, this likewise being secured by rivets or the like 27. Such back band has a back supporting portion 28 and a seat portion 29 e1;- tending substantially horizontally and joining the seat band at right angles; In order to give the seat band a certain stiffness, a reinforcing band 30 extends underneath the lower or horizontal portion of the seat band and a tongue'31 on the band fits between the portion 19 of the seat band and the reinforcing band 30. These various bands are riveted together at their joints as indicated at 32.
From the above construction it will be seen that a strong and a flexible seat is provided, in which substantially the only hard parts are the metal suspension straps and the metal band 22 attached to the back band,
but these are so positioned that a person is `not apt to be struck by thesemetal parts lwhile Vthe swing is being used, and -should a the swing in the operation thereof through Y the metal suspension strapsand the flexible section te engage apersons baclnand arflexi- Y seat band and the back band, and as these two bands are coupled by the` center band, the stresses are distributed among these three bands. .Y Y i Various changes may be made in the principles of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof as set forth in the description, drawings and claims.
I claim: l. .A swing seat, comprising a pair of suspension site upper ends one secured to each strap, having depending lateral portions and a hor` i'aontal seat portion, a back band of flexible material connected at' its forward ends to the said straps and to the upper portions of the seat band, the back band having two lateral side portions extending rearwardly and a ble center band connecting thercentralrportions of theback band and the central portion of the seat band.
' 2. A swing seat as claimed in claim 1, the back band having a metal reinforcing band connected thereto, and said metal band being secured to the said metal strap.
8. A swing seat as claimed in claim 1, the seat band having a reinforcing band connested thereto atthe seat portion, the center band being secured to both the yreinforcing band and the seat band.
4, A swing seat having a pair of metal suspension straps, each having a head with opening therethrough and a depending web, aseat band formed of flexible material secured to the strap, the upper ends tting underneath the said head and the upper portionof the Vstrap of the band being secured to the web, a back band also secured to the in a horizontal plane, the seat handhaving lateral depending portions and a seat portion and the back portion having lateral rearstraps formed of. metal, a seat band formed of flexible material having its oppoupper portions of the seat band and being secured to the said web.
6. A swing seat as claimed in claim 4, the seat band having a reinforcing band on the seat portion thereof and a center band secured to the central back part of the back band and secured between the seat band and `the reinforcing band.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ROBERT DICK.
