Theinvention is for a road planer, and hasspecial reference to road surfacing devices.
Theobject of the invention is to provide a planer for roads specially adapted tothe smoothing of ripples and bulges in a road surface.
Another object of the inventionis to provide adevice as outlined which will provide a smooth continuous plane surface on roadways formed of asphaltic or similar compositionswi'thout unnecessarily tearing up the surface.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device asdescribed whichis readily adjustable to the road surface and on which the cutting blades are easily removed and replaced. I e

.Theinvention consists primarily of a supporting frame forming part of a vehicle, a
planer frame suspended horizontally. at three points within said supporting frame, standards integral with the supporting frame: and having means for independently adjusting the planer frame at the different points of suspension, the planer-frame being of steppedtriangular form and having plate type cutters clamped to the stepped side faces.

- A truck orvhicle frame 7 is provided. witha wide bolster 8 and wheels 9 ,the frame 1 I 7 being so constructed as to hang close to the road surface 10. A draw bar or tongue 11. provides for attachment to a tractive cle- 13 and have vertical faces 14 and cutter retaining recesses 15 forming thrust shoulders 32, tapped holes 16 being provided for reception of the bolts or studs 17. Hubs 18 are 'providedadjacent the vertices of the triangular member 12, and have apertures 19 for reception of the lift screws 20. Cutters 21 are made of sections of rectangular bar steel and are clamped to the surface 15 by means of clamps 22 which are drawn up by means of studs or bolts 17. Standards 23 may be made of structural sections, pipe or other rigid means with the lift screws 20 interposed and hubs 18 slidable therein. 1 At the upper end of standards 23, bearings24; are provided for cooperation with lift screws 20 and bevel gears 25. Brackets 26 are integral with bearings 24 and have the integral bearings 27 disposed at ap roximate right angles to the bearings 24. hafts '28, rotatable in bearings 27 have aiiixed to one end the bevel pinions 29 and at the opposite ends the hand wheels 30. Pinions 29 and gears are operated by means of the hand wheels, the hubs of gears 25 being threaded to receive the lifting screws 20, the square heads 31 011 the screws preventing rotation of the screws in hubs 18; therefore, when hand wheels are rotated, pinions 29 drive gears 25 which cooperate with the screws 20, thereby raising the frame 12 to clear the roadway or to suit special planing conditions. The apertures 19 are freely fitted to permit angular adjustment of the frame 12. If desired, transverse apertures could be provided and yokes and eyes formed on the screws 20.
The operation of the device is as follows:
'The planer cutters are placed in position and clamped by means of clamps 22 and cooperating bolts or studs 17. The frame 12 is adjusted to the desired pitch and depth by means of the hand wheels 30. The vehicle is then drawn along the roadway, the

construction and arrangement 'ofl parts may be resorted to which are consistent with the spirit and scopeof the appended claims, and
that such variations will in nowayfdetract 1 from the scope or advantagesof the invention.

I l. .A- roadplaner-comprising; alframe adjustably. suspended in .v substantially parallel ,relation to a roadsurfacd-and provided with pluralityof plate type cutters in overlapping, stepped angular relation to-thelongitudinal axis of: a supporting.vehicle;
2. A road planer, in combination with a vehiclega frame adj ustably suspended in substantially parallelmelation to a' road surface, and a plurality of cutting edges removably attached tooppo'site sides of said framein stepped relation and in overlapping diverg- :ing, relation to the path of travel.

In combinationwith a vehicle, alplaner frame-suspended therein and adjustabl-y'related :to theroads-urface, a plurality of plate type cutters removably attached ,to each side faceof saidframe and in stepped-relation'. one to the other. and overlapping inthe direction of travel, said cutterson opposite sides beingdivergently related.

A road planer comprisng a frame of substantially triangular form adjustably supported in a. vehicle, said frame'dive-rging rearwardly relative to the direction of travel of said vehicle and continuing with a plurality of inwardly stepped faces inparallel relation, planer knives adjustably mounted on saidfaces and in overlapped relation relative ,to.parallelism1withi the longitudinal axis through said frame.

11. A road planer comprising azframepromounting saidframe in operative relation to a road surface in a vehicle.

14, A road planer, comprising two sets of planer knives in angular relation, each set comprising a plurality of knives in stepped parallel relation and in overlapping relation relative to parallelism witha bisecting axis between said setsof knives, a frame for said knives, clamping and retaining means for 16. In combination with a road vehicle, a
planer frame of substantially triangular form adj ustably supported at the vertices, in a substantially horizontal plane, a plurality of parallel faces formed in each side, each suco ceeding face being retracted, and plate type cutters removably mounted on said faces.
17. In combination with a road vehicle, a planer frame comprising a plurality of diverging sections forming a substantially triangular frame with stepped faces, plate type cutters removably secured to said faces and depending therefrom, said frame being adjustably supported by said vehiclein a substantially horizontal plane.
18. In combination with a road vehicle, a
substantially triangular frame adjustably supported at the vertices, a plurality of parallel faces formed in each side, each succeeding face being retracted, cutters substantially coextensive with said faces and removably I mounted thereon, said faces and cutters being so disposed as to providea continuous cutting plane in the direction of travel.
