Description

' Sept. 15, 1931. GA, BA ER 1,822,986-
STENC-IL FOR DECORATING CHINA WARE AND POTTERY Filed May 6, 1929 Patented Sept. 15, 1931 UNITED STATE GEORGE A. BAUER, 01 BALTIMORE, MARYLAND STENCIL FOR DECORATING CHINA \VARE AND POTTERY Application filed May 6, 1929. Serial No. 360,621.
This invention relates to improvements in stencils for decorating china ware and pottery and has for its object to provide a stencil constructed of pliable metal which can be pressed down close to the surface in the event that there is any unevenness thereof.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combination of the parts hereinafter more 0 fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a plate that has been decorated by the use of my invention.
Figure 2 is a detail plan view of the stencil.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 2.
Referring tothe accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 represents a. plate which has been decorated by the use of the stencil 2. The said stencil 2 is formed of pliable metal such for instance as lead and the design to be used is cut out of said metal as shown in the accompanying drawings. The particular stencil illustrated is used for decorating plates and is formed in a convex shape with the design in the bottom and sides thereof. Extending around near the upper edge of the design is a ring 3 of rigid metal which reinforces the upper edge of the stencil. Extending upwardly from the said ring 3 are two lugs or projections at by means of which the stencil is handled when placing it in the plate or other article to be designed and by which means it is removed after the plate has been treated with the coloring matter. Vhen it is desired to design the plate or other article the stencil is placed in position and in the event there is any unevenness caused by baking of plate or other article of china ware the soft metal 5 can be pressed close to the surface of the article on which the design is to be placed. The stencil is held in this position and the coloring matter is blown or sprayed against the exposed surface and when this is finished the stencil is lifted away from the article being designed and the same is then baked or treated in the usual manner.
In the baking or treating of china ware and pottery there is a shrinkage and also there is frequently some slight warping of the surface on which the design is to be placed and it will be seen by the use of my invention that the stencil is composed of pliable metal which permits it to be pressed close to the surface so that the warped portion will be properly covered by the stencil when the article is to be designed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A stencil for decorating china ware and pottery comprising a pattern formed of lead or other suitable pliable material, a reinforcing ring ext-ending around the entire outer edge of said pattern and lugs projecting upwardly from said ring on opposite sides thereof.
In testimony whereof I mix my signature.
GEORGE A. BAUER.
