LAUREN E. TUTTLE, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT. IN BURlAL-CASE LlDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,295, dated September 19, 1876; application filed August 4, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAUREN E. TUTTLE, of the city of Sterling, in the county of Whitesides and State oflllinois, have invented certain Improvements in Burial-Case Lids, of which the following is a specification My invention consists of a face-glass secured between two cast iron moldings, and
held in a rabbet in the frame of the coffin-lid by means ofpins upon'one of the said moldings.
Figure 1 is the frame A, consisting of the parts a a and the glass 0. Fig. 2 shows the upper end of the coffin-lid B prepared to receive the frame 'A.
The frame A consists of the parts a u, having the glass 1) between them, and being fastened to eachother by means of short screws, or otherwise. The parts a a, on account'of cheapness, are cast of iron or other metal, and one of the parts a a (it is immaterial which) has cast upon its lower edge the projections c c, which fit into corresponding holes in the lid B. B is so much of the lid of the case or coffin as is necessary to exhibit my improvement. In the lid B is out an opening corresponding in its shape to the outside conformation of the frame A. Around and in the edge of this opening is made the shelf d d of sufficient depth that, when the frame A rests thereonfthe upper side of the frame A d, and is held therein by a small screw passing down through the upper end of-the frame A into the lid B. A small outer lid, sufficiently large to cover the glass, is fastened down over the latter in transportation or interment.
The frame A may be oval, round, or any other suitable shape, and may be applied to cofiins, cases,
The finish.
I claim as my invention- The glass plate secured between the two parts of the cast-metal frame, and secured in or caskets. parts a a can be cast in'any desired the rabbet of the lid by means of the pins or projections inserted in the lid itself, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
