TENTER CHAIN LINK Filed sept. 8, 1930 INVENToR,

atented Sept. S, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM A. STELLING, F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR T0 THE TEXTILE- FINISHING- MACHINERY COMPANY, A` CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND TENTER CHAINV LINK Application led September 8, 1930.l Serial N0. 480,408.
A further object of this invention is the provision of means for positively and pivotally supporting the work engaging blade and yet permitting it to be removed by simple manual manipulation `or movement of the mounting means to a predetermined detaching position.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of means for positively locking the mounting means in working position.
With these and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of partsmore fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.
. In the drawings:
- Fig. 1 is a face view or front elevation of one of the tenter chain links;
F ig. 2 is a central section thereof on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the movable jaw showing the work engaging blade or insert as mounted therein in working position;
Fig. 4 is a View similar to Figure 3 showing the mounting means as turned to permit removal of the blade from the jaw;
Fig 5 is a side elevation of the mounting Pm;
1g. 6 is a detail enlarged view of the relation of the pin and the mounting portion of the work engaging blade showing in full lines the blade in position to be removed from the jaw, while showing. in dotted lines the blade in its working position.
Inthe use of tenter chain links, it is desirable to have a rockably mounted work engaging blade in the movable jaw so that the same will adjust or positionitself on the surface of the fabric to obtain the best biting engagement between it and the fixed jaw. The work engaging blade is sharpened so that its edge will better bite the fabric, and from time to time it is desirable to remove the blade for replacement or resharpening the edge thereof, and in order that this may be easily accomplished, I have provided a pin whichr extends through an opening in the blade located'in the middle part thereof for pivotally mounting the blade in the jaw, the blade having a constricted entrant notch ex-` tending from the edge of the blade to this opening through which a narrowed portion of the pin may extend, the pin being rotatably mounted to move this `narrowed portion as desired from working to inoperative position; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished.
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the body of the tenter chain link which is provided with theusual spaced ears 11 and l,12 at one end to receive a single ear 13 of the next link which is at the opposite end of each link from the spaced ears 11 and 12. A xed jaw y14 is provided` on the body and an overhanging Yportion 15 pivotally mounts the swingingor movablejaw 16 above the fixedjaw14. The movable jaw is hingedly supported upon a pin `17 which extends through vthe bearings 39 and 40 on the overhanging portion and the bosses 18 and 19 and the'opener memberL 2O of the movable jaw. rIhe lower `portion of the movable jaw is provided with a recess 21 extending across the width thereof and shaped as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4 with an arcuate portion 22 at its middle. Within this recess 21 there is located a work engaging blade 23 provided with an arcuateA portion 24 which is received within the -arcuate portion 22 ofthe recess. A generally circular opening 25 is Cil provided in the blade located partially in the arcuate area at the upper edge of the blade and a constricted entrant opening or notch 26 leads from the opening 25 to the edge of the blade.
A boss or enlargement 28 is provided on the face of the movable jaw, a pin 27 is rotatably mounted in this boss and spans the recess 2l therein. This pin 27 is slotted or cut away as at 29 Within the recess to reduce its cross section suiiiciently to permit it to pass throughthe constricted entrantopening 26 in the edge of the blade When the pin is ro tated to one certain position. v V
In mountingthe blade inthe `ja`W,' the :pin 27 is rotated to thepbsition shotvnin-Figure 4t by a screw driver or the like Which will be used for engaging the slot 30 th'ereftfr this purpose, the same being positioned to aligning the slot With a mark or other designation 3l on the faceof the boss 28, anilafter the blade is'positioned, the `pin is `rotated in a similar manner a quarter ofal turn'to cause the slot 30'to'talign with the `mark `or'other designation 82, thusbringingthe pinto the position illustrated in Figure Sto pivotally and positively `support the blade in position.
Thereis no spring action or the likefpermitting the blade to be Withdrawn by appropriate pull, but raftliertln-z same is positively mounted in position. lIn order topositively lock the pin in LWorking` pcsition, an' opening 33 isprovided through the pin and falsoran opening Sais.provided` in the b'oss -28 and when the pin has its `slot 30 alignedwit-hthe indica 32theopenings'33 and 34 Willfalign for the reception of thel'ock pin 35"Whic`h may be of the cotterpin type to 'have its end portions 36 :bentnver to hold-fthesame` in position, as illustrated inFigurelL i It will beiapparent thatIfhave provided a construction in Which the blade may beeasily removed for repair or replacement bysimple manual manipulation `of a pin,'and yet when in workingposition, the same' is positively held against removal and yetipivotally `or roclrably ysnpported in 4position by'a single suitably shaped pin. i
'IVhile'I have described certain construction forms which embody theiprinciples of my inventiornit is obviousthat other de sired changes'in `arrangement may Abeflnade Within the spirit `andthe scope oftheinventionv as defined in theappended claims.
I claim:
