IMPROVEMENT IN HARROW-TEETH. i
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,237, dated September 12, 1876; application led May 27, 1876.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. SPEER,
ot Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrow- Teeth; and-I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use th same, reference beingvhad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to teeth designed for harrows, cultivators, and like ground-disintegrating implements; and consists in,"flrst, a tooth whose body has grooved faces provided with constant plane edges; second, a quadrilateral tooth having parallel and grooved sides, and provided with a plane-sided point.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my barrow-tooth in working position, while Fig. 2 represents a crosssection of the body of the tooth.
A is the tooth, formed of any suitable metal or Working material, as I may desire, and in proportion applicable to the occasion. a is its point, constructed, as customary, with corresponding square faces, but which, as extended or carried up into the body proper of the tooth, changes or develops into an gular recesses or grooved depressions, the plane of whose central surface is well sunk below that of its retaining edges-that is, while I give the well-known right-angular sides to the point of the tooth, I allow the edges to continue on in the ordinary proportionment, so as to ill up in outline the four outlying or bounding points l or edges of the tool, and yet channel out the intervening faces or sides, so as to cause such latter to be well below said former. The advantages of such a construction, embodying greater strength of wearing property with extreme lightness of weight, all obtained at a less cost on account of the smaller amount of metal required in the rolling, are too obvious to call for particular observation.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A quadrilateral grooved tooth, having parallel sides and a plane-sided point, substantially as and for the purpose described.
