The invention relates to compresses and refers more particularly to high densit cotton compresses. One of the objects of t ie invention is to provide a high density attachment which may be arranged in operative relation to a compress. and may be supported independently of this compress, Another object is to provide a high density attachment of strong, substantial construction having means for adjusting the parts to insure the proper operation of the attachment and take care of wear. With these as well as other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the present instance the compress is of the mechanically operated type, such as. shown in the copending. application of George W. Langford, Alford G. Barrows and John H. McLean, Serial Number 52,645
upon compress for cotton and the like. jThis compress, briefly stated, hasthe stationary upper platen 1 and the movable lower platen 2, which latter is operated by the lower toggle lever 3 which in turn are actuated by the reduction gearing 4 located above the upper platen 1.
The high density attachment has the pair of side doors 5, the lower ends of which are pivotally mounted at 6 at the outer ends of the base members 7, thesebase members be ing mounted upon the parallel channels 8. which latter rest upon the bed for the compress and support the attachment independently of the compress. 9 are pivots outwardly beyond the base members 7 and 10 are tie rods extending between these pivots for holding the same in spaced relation to each other. For verticaly adjusting the pivots, there are the struts 11 which extend to points below the base members 7. The lower ends of these struts are suspended from the base members by theadjustable tie rods 12 which'hav'e bosses 13 through which the struts extend. There are nuts 14 threaded upon the struts at opposite ends of the bosses for adjusting the struts longitudinally of the bosses. The tie rods, 12 are adjustably held in spaced relation by means of the tie rods 15. p
Since the arrangement for actuating each side door 5 is the same, that for one, side door only will be described. 16 and 17 are respectivelythe long and. short toggle levers of a pair with the long toggle lever connected to the pivot 9 and the short toggle lever pivotally connected to the upper end of the side door. This pair of toggle levers are actuated by the upper and lower toggle levers18 and 19, respectively, which form a pair of auXiliary toggle levers, with the upper toggle lever connected to the pivot 20 between the long and short toggle levers 16 and 17 and the lower toggle lever pivotally supported at 21 upon the tie rods 12. 22 is an air cylinder in which operates a piston connected to the piston rod 23, the upper end of the latter being pivotallyconnected at 2 1- to the lower toggle lever 19. The lower end of the air cylinder is pivotally supported upon the bottom of the compress bed so that as the togglelevers are straightened out the air cylinder may move angularly. a ,7
For the purpose of operating both side doors 5 in unison, the lower toggle levers 19 are provided at their pivotally supported ends with the gear segments 25 which mesh, so that these lower toggle levers 19 arecompelled'to move in unison and consequently the remaining toggle levers must also move in unison so that the side doors will simultaneously move to closed and open positions.
With the above arrangement it will be seen that the'high density attachment forms a unit supportedindependently of the com I to provide for proper operation of the attachment and take care of wear. It Will be furthermore seen that the construction is strong and substantial and that both side doors are compelled to close and open in un1son.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. The combination with a compress having upper and lower platens, of a high density attachment, including a support separate from said compress, side doors arranged in operative relation to said compress, pivots,
toggle levers between each of said pivots andthe adjacent side door for actuating the latter, means including'a tie bar for holding said pivots in spaced relation to each other, means for adjusting said pivots, including struts extending downwardly and inwardly from said pivots, and means for suspending the lower ends of said struts from said support.
2. The combination with a compress, of a high density attachment arranged in operative relation to said compress, said attachment including side doors, means separate from said compress for pivotally supporting said side doors, pivots, toggle levers between each of said pivots and the adjacent side door for actuating the latter, means including a tie bar for holding said pivots in spaced relation to each other, means for adjusting said pivots relative to the pivots of said side doors, including struts extending downwardly and inwardly from said pivots, and means including an adjustable tie rod depending from said door supporting means for supporting the lower ends of said struts.
3. The combination with a compress, of a high density attachment, including side doors, a pair of toggle levers for actuating each of said side doors, a pair of auxiliary toggle levers arranged between an established fulcrum and the first mentioned toggle levers for actuating the latter, and means for hold-' ing said pairs of auxiliary toggle levers to operate 1n unison.
l. The combination with a compress, of a high density attachment, including side doors, means separate from said compress for pivotally supporting said side doors, pivots, a pair of toggle levers between each of said pivots and the adjacent side door for actuating the latter, a pair of auxiliary toggle levers for actuating each pair of said first mentioned toggle levers, tie bars extending between said pivots, struts extending downwardly and inwardly from said pivots for adjusting the latter relative to the pivots for said doors, means for actuating each pair of auxiliary toggle levers, adjustable tie rods depending from said door supporting means and pivotally supporting one of each pair of auxiliary toggle levers and also supporting the lower ends of said struts, and cooperating means upon the last mentioned pivotally supported auxiliary toggle levers for compelling the same to operate in unison.
5. The combination with a compress, of a high density attachment including a door, toggle levers for actuating said door, and auxiliary toggle levers arranged between an established fulcrum and the first mentioned toggle levers for actuating the latter.
6. The combination with a compress, of a high density attachment therefor, including side doors, means for supporting said attachment independently of said compress, a pair of toggle levers for actuating each of said side doors, a pair of auxiliary toggle levers for actuating each of said first mentioned pair of toggle levers, and meansfor actuatlng said auxiliary toggle levers in unison.
7. Thecombination with a compress, of a high density attachment therefor, including a door, a pivot spaced from said door, toggle levers between said pivot and door for actuating the latter, auxiliary toggle levers for actuating the toggle levers aforesaid, means for adjusting the pivot relative to the mounting for the door to produce a corresponding adjustment of said first mentioned toggle levers, and adjustable means for supporting the said auxiliary toggle levers.
8. The combination with a compress, of a high density attachment including a door, toggle levers for actuating said door, auxiliary toggle levers arranged between an es tablished fulcrum and the first mentioned toggle levers, and means for applying a force laterally upon one of said auxiliary toggle levers for actuating said first mentioned toggle levers.
9. The combination with a compress, of a high density attachment including a door,- toggle levers for actuating said door, auxiliary toggle levers connected to the toggle levers aforesaid, an adjustable established fulcrumfor the auxiliary toggle levers and means for applying a force to said auxiliary toggle levers for actuating said first mentioned toggle levers.
