' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W ILIJIAM L. HUBBELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSI GNOR TO RAYMOND JENKINS, OF SAME PLACE. I
IMPROVEMENT IN 'rov DANCING FIGURES Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,195, dated September 12, 1876; application filed 7 May 18,1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. HUBBELL,
' of the city and State of New York, have invented an lmprovement in Toy Dancers, of which the following is a specification:
I place the actuating mechanism or clockmovement in a metallic case forming the base, which is provided with a removable head or' cover, to give access to the mechanism, and upon this head the figure is made to dance. The vertical Wire that moves the figure is connected with the escapement-lever; and the en block d, that is fastened into the case by nails passing up through the bottom a, and the plates f, spring g, train of gearing, escapement-wheel h, and pallets '6 are of usual construction.
The escapement-lever I, from the pallet-shaft,
is made with an eye, through which passes the vertical rod m, with disks or nuts above and below the eye; and said rod Works freely through ahole in the head or cover 0 of the case, and carries at its upper end the jointed dancing figure n, the movement of the escapement and rod m giving to the figure the upand-down movement necessary to .n1ake it dance, and the rod m and figur'eare free to revolve. If these parts only were used, the
.weight of the figure would accelerate the downward movement and prevent an upward spring in the same. To prevent this, the oscillating balance-wheel r is employed. The same has a fork, 3, upon one side, .taking the bent end of the lever l, and a coiled spring, u,-is around the gudgeon that holds this wheel, one end being attached to said gudgeon, and the other to the Wheel, the object of this being to cause the spring to counterpoise the figure, and the a vibrating wheel to give a greater range of motion to the figure than would result from the escapement alone, and make the movement less frequent and more uniform, in order that the figure may dance in a more natu- V ral manner.
I claim as my invention 1. The oscillator r, in conibination with the escapement h i, lever l, and dancing figure, substantial] y as set forth.
2. The combination, in a'toydancer, of the escapement h i, lever l, oscillator 1', spring a,
rod m, and dancing figure, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 11th day of May, A. D.
WM. L. HUBBELL.
