v CAR ROOF Filed July l1. 1930 Patented Sept. 1, 1931 UNITED 4s'rix'liis PATENT oFFicE CHARLES DAVID BONSALL, PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 P.` H. MURPHY COMPANY, OF NEW-KENSINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF can' `Roer' Appncatian flied Juiy ii, 1930. serial No. 467,261.
This invention relates to metalfcar roofs of the type wherein the metal'roofsheets are provided along their adj acentmargins with raised panels and are connected by weatherproofing seam caps having outstanding base flanges thatl rest on said raised. panels. The principal obj ect of the present invention is to provide for maintaining the raised marginal panels of the sheets in contact with the base flanges of the seam caps and thereby' increase the weathcrproofing qualities of the roof. Other objects are simplicity and cheapness of construction, fewness of parts and ease of assembly. The invention consists in the parts and in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described andyclaimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Vwhich forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols referto like parts wherevert-hey occur,
Fig. l is aplan view of a portion of the' car roof embodying my invention,

Fig. 5 'is a `plan view of one of the boltsupporting straps. 'Y
Referring to the accompanying drawings, my invention is shown in connection with a car roof frameor substructure' comprising ""Z-bar side plates A' connected by ohannel-' shaped carlines B having outstanding flanges lat the tops of their side walls. The Z-barj side plates 'A are arranged withtheir `webs horizontal and with one flange in and extending upwardly; and the ends of the carlines B are rigidly secured to the respective side plates by means of carline brackets C that have channel-shaped body portions adapted to receive the ends of said carlines and depending end flanges that are riveted flatwise to the upstanding inner flanges of said side plates.
Metal roof sheets D extend from side to cia strips E that are removably secured flatwise to the outer faces of the upstanding inner flanges of the side plates. The roof sheets D are provided with depending eaves flanges 2 that overhang the outer edgesof the fascia strips and terminate at their eaves ends in inturned flanges that are spaced away from said fascia strips, whereby said sheets are independently movable.` The roof sheets D are spaced Vapart along their adjacent side margins, which are offset upwardly above the carlines, forming raised panels 3 at the sides a of the sheets. The raised side panels 3 of the roof sheets extend from end to end thereof and the free marginal edges of said panels are bent up to form upstanding flanges 4 `at the side marginal edges of the sheets. Throughout the greaterportion of their length,` the side marginal flanges 4L of thereof sheets are of substantially uniform depths, but the end i *portionsof said flanges slope downwardly toward the plane of the sheets adj acentto the eaves end thereof. a 'Y The roof sheets are spaced apart on op-` posite sides of the longitudinal VVcenter lines of thecarlines with their raised sidemarginal panels 3 spaced above the outstanding top flanges of said carlines. The roof sheets are looselyk connected along their adjacent side margins by Weatherproofingseam caps F of substantially inverted channel-shaped section which extendv from eaves tov eaves 'of the car and are provided at the lower edges of their side walls with outstanding base flanges 5 that rest on the raised side marginal panels 3 of adjacent sheets. The seam caps F are provided at their eaves ends with depending.
rlie seam caps F are held down on raised Y panels of the sheets and"sai`dpanel's are, in turn, held down on the ewooden-filler strips' by lmeans of lupright bolts Grv located adjacent I tothe ridge and eaves ofthev car. Each of said bolts is supported at its lower end on a strap ll disposed transversely of the carline 1 -with its Vends rigidlysecured in depressions "faces lof `said strap. Each "bolt 'entends up-y la provided therefor in the outstanding top flanges l of thefcarline. The portion of the strap that spans thev chaniielof the Ycarliiie isprovided with'a vertical hole adapted' to loosely receive the threadedv lower end of they bolt; Each ybolt is'secured to the ydepressed v portion of its supporting strap byY means of nuts lZfand 13 that are threaded on the bolt in Vposition to bear against thetop and bottom wardly through a hole 9a providedy therefor thellerjstrip 9 and i'sprovidednear its upperend with a collar 14 forming a' shoulder'V adapted to support the webof .the seam capjv collar extends 'through anY opening in Y said web'and 'isthreaded' to' receive a nut l5 which serves to clamp said cap to said' shoulder.
