The driving shaft 23 carries apair of separated gears 25 mounted within suitable housings 26 projecting from the rear of the machine. These gears enter or pass through openings in the casing 1 and mesh with the peripheral gears 9 carried by the spider, 6. Obviously the rotation of the shaft 23 imparts a rotary movement to the washing cylinderthrough the driving devices herein described. This cylinder is driven alternately in opposite directions, the motor having suitable controls which are well known in the art for reversing its direction of rotation at determined time intervals. lnasmuch as' such mechanisms are so well known in the art it is not deemed necessary to disclose this control in detail. It will be understood that as long as the handle 13 is coacting,` with the starting switch this rotary movement of the container 1 continues. When it is desired, however, to remove the clothes from this container the rotation of the container must cease, but in order that the container may be elevated or lifted from the casing 1, priorto lifting' this container it is desirable to lock the sameagainst rotation and `in a position where the door openingin the container is `directed toward the floor of the laundry or the like. I have described this braking` mechanism in detail in my co-pending` application Serial No. 50,075, but the same will be briefly referred to herein, One of the trunnions 7 of the container is received in a housing; 27 having dispd ,il therein a brake drum 23, which drum is keyed to said trunnion 7. 7 In a Washing machine, the coml'iinat-ion with a casing, a cylinder therein, a gear rotatable with the cylinder, elevating members connected to the cylinder, and transmission mechanism for driving said gear and elevating members, said mechanism comprising a support, a mot-cr mounted en said suppert, a shaft directly connected with the iin-eter, second shaft journalledin said support, a pair of gears on said second siaift, a gear on the motor connected shaft, means ter selectively meshing said last mentioned gear with either of said pair of gears, connections from one gear of said pair of to said cylinder gear, and connections from the other gear of said pair of gears to the elevating members.

In a washing machine et the rotary cyiinder, self-unloading type, the combination With the washing .machine casing and cylinder, of transmission mechanism supported by the casing for both rotating and elevating said cylinder, said mechanism comprising a power shaft, a gear train for rotating said cylinder, a second gear train for elevating said cylinder, and means including a driving element common to both gear trains and operable to connect said trains separately to said power shaft.

In a washing machine of the rotary cylinder, self-unloading` type, the combina tion with the washing machine casing and cylinder, of power means, a train of mechanical elements for rotating the cylinder, a second train of mechanicaly eleniens for elevating the cylinder, means ter selectively connecting both of said trains to the power means, and a manually operable device ier setting saidconnecting means to cause either one of said trains to be driven by the power means.
10. In a `washing machine, the combina# gear, a second gear train for operating the cylinder elevating member, and means including a driving element common to both gear trains andk operable to connect said trains separately to said power shaft.
