a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cookfand State of Illinois, have inve-ntedce1tai11 new and useful Improvements in Automaticlte of which the following is a specification. I
The invention relates to reversing mecha nism for Washing or other machines which are actuated by motive power, and ithas for its object the provision of reversingmechanism which is automatic in operation, which will positively reverse the direction of movement of the driven element at the proper time, and which is of advantageous con struction by reason: of its simplicity compactness and paucity of parts.
The object of the invention thus generally stated together with other and ancillary advantages are obtainedby the construction and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which, Figure l is a fragmentary front elevation of a preferred form of my improved reversing mechanism applicable to a washing machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view takencn line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig; 3 is a fragmentary detail view of one of the parts of the reversing mechanism. 7 An automatic reversing mechanism comprising, in combination With a driven element, a reversing clutch, a shifting lever for the clutch, means operable to swing said lever including a tension spring, and an element to Which said spring is directly attached geared directly tothe driven element and operable to change the direction of pull of said spring.

An automatic reversing mechanism comprising, in combination With an element to be driven, a rotatable element having a continually operating gearing connection With said driven element, a reversing clutch, spring means acting directly between said rotatable element and said clutch to shift the latter in the rotation of said element, and cooperating devices on said lever and rotatable element for controlling the movement of the lever.
9. An automatic reversing mechanism comprising, in combination with a driven element, a reversing clutch, a reciprocating member actuated in continual operation by said driven element, and means operable to periodically reverse said clutch, said means including a spring directly attached to said member and operatively connected to said clutch.
